II – God’s Protection

“And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil” – vs. 13a

A.) The Petition

- The word temptation here is the Greek word “Peirasmos” which is basically a neutral term.

-The root word has to do with testing or proving

- Here it seems to parallel the word “evil” indicating that it has in view enticement to sin.

B.) The Paradox

Premise 1: God is holy and because he is holy, he hate sin, much more, he does not induce anyone to commit sin

“Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:” – James 1:13

B.) The Paradox

Premise 2: “Peirasmos” strengthens our faith

“My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.” – James 1:2,3

“Mga igsoon ko, isipa nga maoy tumang kalipay sa diha nga igakasugat ninyo ang nagkalainlaing mga panulay,kay kamo nahibalo nga ang pagsulay sa inyong pagtoo mosangpot sa pagkamainantuson;” (Cebuano)

The Paradox: Why ask God to do what he would never do anyway, and why does James tell us to rejoice when trial comes and not to seek to avoid them. Also why should we pray “Lead us not into temptation”

C.) The Plea – When we pray and ask the we be lead not into temptation . . .

1.) We pour out our heart’s desire - Jesus was not speaking of logic or theology here but a heart desire and inclination that cause a believer to want to avoid the danger and trouble sin

creates. A truly saved person despises and fears sin that it wants to escape all possibility of falling into it, choosing to avoid rather than to defeat temptation.

“We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth (hamartanei) not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.” – 1 John 5:18

“Kita sayud nga ang gipanganak gikan sa Dios dili magpakasala, apan ang Anak nga gipanganak gikan sa Dios nagabantay kaniya, ug ang dautan dili magahilabut kaniya.” (Cebuano)

2.) We are asking God to safeguard us from sin - The petition is a plea to God to watch over our eyes, ears, mouth, hands

feet and all our human faculties that in whatever we see, hear, do or anywhere we go, he will protect us from sin. It is laying hold to the promise of God that:

“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” – 1 Cor. 10:13

“Kaninyo walay nakaabut nga bisan unsang pagpanulay nga dili maantus sa tawo. Ang Dios kasaligan, ug dili niya itugot kamo nga pagapanulayon sa labaw sa inyong kaarangan, apan uban sa pagpanulay siya magatagana usab ug lutsanan sa paglikay, aron kamo makahimo sa pag-antus niini.” (Cebuano)

3.) We declare that we submit to His Word which is our protection from sin

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” – James 4:17

“Busa magpasakop kamo nga masinugtanon sa magpasakop kamo nga masinugtanon sa Dios; apan sukli ninyo ang yawa, ug kini siya mokaratil pagdalagan gikan kaninyo.” (Cebuano)

“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” – Psalm 119:11

Sa akong kasingkasing ginatipigan ko ang imong pulong, Aron dili ako makasala batok kanimo. (Cebuano)

DEUTORONOMY 6:1-25

1 Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it:

2 That thou mightest fear the LORD thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.

3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey.

4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:

5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:

7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.

9 And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

10 And it shall be, when the LORD thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not,

11 And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full;

12 Then beware lest thou forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.

IV – God’s Pre-eminence

“For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever amen” – (vs. 13b)

- Preeminence implies supreme standing, picturing one who excels over all others in a particular quality or achievement

- God is pre-eminent. Our purpose in life is no other than to glorify God.

-Our man-centered culture doesn't share that perspective. In today’s modern culture even the presentation of sin, salvation and prayer has its focus on man.

- The pattern for prayer that Jesus is presenting here reminds us what the focus of true prayer should be about. The prayer starts, contains and ends with God and his pre-imminence.
