HHooww ttoo MMaakkeeYYoouurr ZZOOOOMMeerraannggYou can print out your ZOOMerang and make it into a little booklet.
Here’s how:• Print all the ZOOMerang pages.• Cut out each page along the dotted lines.• Tape pages 1–6 together from end to end so that you have
a long row.• Tape pages A–F together to make a second long row.• Lay one row face down on a table and put some glue on the back
of the pages.• Place the second row on top of the first row. The printed part of the second
row should face you.• Smooth out the glue with your hand.• Let it dry and then fold your ZOOMerang where the pages join together. Voi la!

Poke a hole in the bottom ofyour cup and put the pebblesover the hole. They will help anyextra water drain out of the cup.Fill the container 3/4 full with soil.
Make a 2-centimeter hole in thesoil, drop in the seed, andcover it with soil. Water thesoil until water drips out of thehole at the bottom.
Do you think the seed willsprout? Give it a few weeks to findout. Leave it in a sunny place andbe sure to keep the soil moist.
What kinds of plantscan you grow from theseeds of fruits and veggies in your kitchen? That’s the mystery! Doa little detective workand find out.
What You Need

• scissors
• a few pebbles

Make more Mystery Seed cups.(You might want to label them sothat what’s growing isn’t a mysterytoo.) Write to ZOOM and tell ushow many different seeds you gotto grow and what plants theywere. Which seed grew thefastest? Which seed grew thetallest? Is there anything youcan do to help your plants growfaster or bigger? Send us drawings too!

Ask an adult for help or permission before using aknife or the oven.Wash and peel your potato. Then
carefully cut the potato into very
thin slices. Preheat your oven to
375 degrees.
Use the paper towel to rub some
vegetable oil onto your
baking sheet.This will keep the
potato chips from sticking to the
sheet. Put the potato slices on the
sheet and sprinkle them with salt.
Bake for 30 minutes.
When they look golden brown
and crispy, take them out of the
oven and use your spatula to flip
them over. Sprinkle salt on the
other side.Then bake them for
another 20 minutes.When
they’re done, put them on a
plate right away and let cool.

This can be messy, so youmight want to use some ofthe newspaper to cover yourwork surface. Cut sheets ofnewspaper into strips andthen tear them into tinypieces. You’ll need about 11/2packed cups of shreddedpaper. Place the paper in a large jar and fill it with 3 cups of hot water.

m a k i n gScrew the lid on the jar andlet the mixture stand forabout 3 hours. Shake the jarfrom time to time, and stirthe pieces with a plasticspoon to keep them fromclumping together. (Be sure touse a plastic spoon becausethe mixture will stain thespoon.) The more you stirthe mixture, the smoother itwill become. Add more hotwater as the paper absorbs it.
When the mixture is pasty andcreamy, pour it into a disposable pan. Dissolve 3tablespoons of cornstarch in 1/2 cup of hot water. Pour itinto the paper mixture andmix thoroughly. Take a handful of the mixture andsqueeze out the excess water.Put the mixture on a piece ofwax paper. Smush it down soit’s flat like paper. Put anotherpiece of wax paper on top andpress your hands down onthe top of the paper, letting the water seep out.Wipe the excess water off.
Place the paper in the sun todry. Repeat this process withthe rest of the mixture. As thepaper dries, keep pressing itdown to get the water out.Let it dry thoroughly overnight.Decorate your paper byputting leaves and flowers in itwhile it’s wet or using crayons, markers, or paint when thepaper is dry.

Can rubber bands be used to create energy? Try
What kind of coffeedid Dracula like?

A
Cut the tray into asquare shape andthen clip off the top two corners. Cut a square out ofthe opposite end. This iswhere you will place the paddle wheel.
Make the paddlewheel by cutting twosame-size rectangles out ofthe leftover Styrofoam.Therectangles shouldn’t be biggerthan the square shape you cutinto the back of your boat.
Make a notch in the middle of each rectangle bycutting out a small piece. Fitthem together.
Try powering a homemade boat with one and find out!
B
To hook the paddle wheel to the boat, stretch therubber band acrossthe back of the boat.Takeyour paddle wheel and slip itbetween the rubber band.
You’re ready to test yourboat. Fill your bathtub withwater.Turn the paddle wheelto wind up the rubber band, place it in the water, and let it go!
Why does the paddle wheelturn? The wound-up rubberband has a lot of energy. When it unwinds, the energy is released and it moves the paddle wheel. The paddle wheelpushes against the water tomove the boat. Is there any wayto make your boat go even farther? Test your ideasand send the results to ZOOM,Box 350, Boston, MA 02134 orpbskids.org/zoom.
