IntroductionIn this manual I will be teaching you how to make a Kandi mask and cuff. The audience I’m focusing on are those who have a lot of patience and enjoy going to EDM festivals and listening to EDM. Many times at festivals people covering in bracelets and masks will come up to you and want to trade, you can’t trade if you don’t have any Kandi. EDM is Electronic Dance Music, but it’s not just music it’s a lifestyle for many people.

We in the EDM community believe in P.L.U.R, which stands for peace, love, unity, and respect. When people hear the word “Kandi” they automatically think of sweets like lollipops and chocolate but this is a different kind of kandi. Kandi can come in many forms such as single bracelets, cuffs, masks, headbands, etc.

Kandi is an important part because it’s a way of bonding within the EDM community. When people trade at festivals it means giving a total stranger something they cherish that way they can leave a lasting impact on each other. Once you’ve experienced your first trade you will never forget it because it is an amazing moment.

Chapter 1Picking or Making Your Own PatternBefore making your cuff or mask you must have a pattern picked out or made.

There are many patterns and designs to choose from with. If you’re having trouble choosing a pattern you can go to KandiPatterns.com to find multiple designs.

If you want to make your own design you can simply print out [image 1] and fill in the desired parts you like for your design and pattern.

When making your mask you should make it the right size and the right height that way while wearing it, it won’t bother you or fall off.

When designing your mask you can choose from many different types of patterns such as a Subzero mask, a Surgical mask, or a Flower mask.

Picking a Color Scheme for Event or LikingPicking the color for your mask all depends on what you want it to be or if you want it to go with your outfit if you’re attending a festival.

You could use and colors you’d like which range from glow in the dark, neon, pastel and even shiny colors.

When making your mask you can use different colors or different colored type beads not just one specific type of colored

Decide on which color(s) you’d like to use to begin collecting the supplies needed to begin making your mask.

When picking your color(s) take in consideration of the event or outfit you will be wearing. You don’t want the color(s) to clash with your outfit or else it will look like a giant mess.

If you are making a particular character try not to change up the colors because then people will not be able to tell what it is portraying and you do not want that.

Once you decide on the colors for the main portion of the mask you must now pick colors for the straps. Remember to have them similar in color with the main mask.

The straps should be long enough to where you have breathing room but tight enough to where the mask won’t constantly move around or fall off your face.

Determining the size of the Mask Make your mask fit perfectly to where it won’t fall off, and you won’t have to keep taking it off to breathe. The mask should cover your mouth, nose, and part of your chin. (Image 2)

If you have a small face use around forty beads so the base should be a comfortable fit.

If you have a bigger face more beads may be used to make sure the mask fits comfortably.

Chapter 2Supplies Needed To begin making your mask you will need:

1) Specific color of beads2) String (exceptional amount)3) Scissors4) Marker (to label the strings)5) Design and Pattern

Begin Base for Mask Gather the string then fold in half to where both ends are in your hand. On the top string, use the marker to label it so later on when you begin weaving you will

not get confused. On each string place one of your desired bead colors and make sure they go all the way to

the bottom where the fold is. Once you have that done bring both strings together then add one bead on both. When you have finally gotten the desired length make sure that at the end there is two

beads on the string. If there are two beads on each string you must finally tie them together to secure the

beads in place. (Image 3)

Begin Weaving Process for maskWhen you finally tied off the base you will now begin weaving the string through each bead while also adding a bead

1. Once you weaved one of the strings through the first bead you will then add a bead then weave the string through the next bead.

2. You will continue to do this for the first row and the second row.

3. Once you weave the string through the last bead on the second row you will then get the string that isn’t marked bring it up to the second row and add a bead.

4. Once you’ve done that begin the weaving process all over.

**When you begin weaving you will begin making the top part of the mask only, it is completely normal because you will make the bottom of the mask later.**

Chapter 3Making the Bottom portion of the maskAfter you’ve finished the top portion of the mask you will now start the bottom portion

The bottom portion is exactly like the top except it’s not going to be that long and you are starting with a whole new set of string.

For the bottom portion you will need to weave a string through the base while adding beads as well.

The bottom part is a little tricky because the string doesn’t have a solid foundation to keep it from moving.

Once you begin weaving the bottom part depending on the design you chose you will begin skipping spaces to finally be able to cut if off and tie the mask.

On specific patterns you will begin to form two triangle like parts on the bottom of the mask. (Image 4)

Those are necessary to be able to tie it off.

Image 4

Tying off MaskWhen you have finally finished both the top portion and the bottom portion of the mask you will “tie it off”

You need to tie it off that way when you’re connecting the ends of each triangle like shape the beads won’t budge or fall off.

10

To tie it off at the top portion of the mask you will need both strings and weave them through to one side that way it will be easier to tie.

Once you’ve weaved through you will then tie them together securely so they won’t pop off.

If you want extra security you can cover the knot with see through nail polish. To tie off the bottom portion of the mask it will use the same steps that the top portion

used.

It may be a little hard to weave them through to one side because it will probably be loose, in the case that it is loose before you weave it through you will have to tighten it.

In order to tighten it grab both strings and pull in opposite directions, don’t pull too hard or else the string will bust and the beads will go everywhere. (Image 5)

Image 5

Connecting the Triangle Shaped PortionsAfter you have finished tying off the mask you will need to connect the triangle shaped portions of the mask.

To connect the top portion triangles all you will need is a new string.

Take the string and weave it through the top three beads of the first triangle all the way to the second triangle.

Once you’ve done that you will grab both strings, pull tightly, and then tie the two ends together.

You will do this again for the bottom portion of the mask. (Image 6)

Making the StrapsMaking the straps for the mask is relatively simple, all you need is a string you feel is long enough.

You will tie one end to the side to the mask then begin adding the beads you feel will go with the color scheme of the mask.

Once you’ve added the necessary amount of beads, tie the last end of the string to the bottom side of the mask repeat for the other strap. (Image 6)
