Presentation?!?!
Carleitta Paige-Anderson, PhD Director, Center for Undergraduate Research
Ellison Hall, Room 203 [email protected]
What is poster?
• Summary of the research or creative inquiry project
• It should:
• Outline the significance of the topic
• Explain what your contribution to the topic will be
• The steps you took to engage in the project
• The outcomes
Qualities of a GOOD
Poster
• Legible (Font, font size, formatting)
• Visually pleasing (use illustrations to diagram
processes that would usually take a significant
amount of text)
• Stand alone (Someone should be able to
understand your project without you standing there)
Presenting Posters
• Business Professional/Casual Attire (Be comfortable)
• Relax (You are the expert)
• Prepare (Do not memorize)
• Make eye-contact
• Use the poster to your advantage (direct the audience to the section where you want to make the point)
• This should be a discussion, so they may interrupt and ask questions (that’s ok)
How should I engage
the audience? • Thank them for expressing interest in your poster.
• Give them the punchline up front - The purpose of the project is to…, and this is important because
• Maintain a flow of thought, try not to jump around the poster
• Proceed to each section in a step-wise manner
• Try to limit your “presentation” to about 5-10 minutes
