HOW TO CITE WEBSITES
GOALS
• Understand the terms: sources, citations and works cited• Cite sources accurately• Compose citations for online articles and professional sites• Create a Works Cited in Microsoft Word
WHAT ARE SOURCES??
• Sources are materials used to gather information• There are two types: print and non-print
(Web)• Print sources are: books, magazines,
newspapers, journals, etc…• Non-print sources are: Internet sites, radio,
TV, etc…• We use both of these types of sources in
our writing assignments.
WHY WOULD SOMEONE WANT TO KNOW WHAT SOURCES YOU USED?
• To make sure what I wrote was true• Find out more about a subject• Locate your information(sources)• Make sure I got my info from a trustworthy site
HOW DO PEOPLE READING YOUR PAPER FIND OUT WHAT SOURCES YOU USED?
• You list the source in your paper• You create a list of sources at the end of
your paper called a Works Cited.• A Works Cited is a list of the sources you
cite in your paper (books, websites, etc..)• Each source requires a different citation. A
citation for a book would require a different citation than a website.
WORKS CITED
WHY DO I NEED A WORKS CITED?
• Lets your reader know where you got your information• Tells others which sources you used• Build credibility by demonstrating
accountability to your source material • Protect you from plagiarism(using someone
else’s work without crediting the source)• Sign of respect
HOW TO CITE WEB SOURCES?
• Requirements created by MLA.
• Online news articles or professional sites:
• Editor, author, or compiler name (if available).
Name of Site. Version number. Name of
institution/organization affiliated with
the site (sponsor or publisher), date of
resource creation (if available). Medium of
publication. Date of access.
NOTES
• When the source has an author, the author’s name comes first (Last name, First name).
• If there’s no author, the title of the article or webpage comes first
• The title of the article is placed in quotation marks
• Title of the website is italicized• Citations have two dates: date created or
published and the date accessed(info changes)• Use n.d. when the site has no publication date• Some professional sites don’t include an author
because they’re created by a group of people
EXAMPLE CITATION
• Online news article from the Internet:
• Kraus, Stephanie. “Women in Combat.” Time for Kids. Time Inc., 21 February 2013. Web.
4 March 2013.
• Online professional article from the Internet:• Schons, Mary. “Healthy at Every Size.” National
Geographic Education. National Geographic Society, 10 August 2010. Web. 15 March 2013.
PRACTICE CITATION

will use the green citation sheets.• For the one online professional site you will
