Even though we have only been chamber members for a few months, we’ve made amazing professional contacts and have had successful business networking. The best connection we have made is with fellow chamber member Sportspros. We have actually combined our efforts and Sportpros have moved into our facility. This is the time of year that I really enjoy and no it’s not our wonderful weather, it’s the time of year were I get to give out checks to the teachers who applied for Best B.E.T Grants. It is so

gratifying to see how much the teacher appreciate this program and to listen to the students explain what the money will be used for. We also receive so many creative thank you notes and cards from the teachers and their students. This is all made possible because we have a great partnership with our two Rotary Clubs, Kiwanis and the University Club who continue to support this program each year. Thanks to their support and Janet Johnson, State Farm Agent, this year we have given out $20,002.77 to the teachers in Claremont.

Lots of fun things are happening at the Chamber again this year! On Thursday, March 20th we will be having a ½ day seminar at the Pomona Valley Medical Center located on Monte Vista. Make your reservations today for this fun filled afternoon. Learn about marketing your business, public speaking and social media. Call the Chamber office to make your reservation. Registration fee is $35 for Chamber Members and $50 for Non-Members.

Dust off those golf clubs and join us on Monday, April 7th for the Educational Classic Golf Tournament at Via Verde Golf and Country Club in San Dimas. This year the Chamber is partnering with the Claremont Educational Foundation to make this the best tournament in the area. While you enjoy a great game of golf, the proceeds raised from the event will benefit the teachers and students in Claremont. This is a win-win for everyone!

We are also starting to plan for our second annual Claremont Restaurant Week this July. Claremont Restaurant Week plans to give local food aficionados and visitors an opportunity to visit and enjoy participating restaurants throughout the city, who will prepare a 3-course prix fixe dinner menu.

On Wednesday, January 22 the Claremont City Council presented its State of the City at the Candlelight Pavilion. The annual event is an opportunity for the City to share its past accomplishments and highlight major issues and projects for the coming year. Mayor Opanyi Nasiali opened the presentation by stating that the City is in a good place because of a strong commitment to “Living Within Our Means.” The City has had a surplus of approximately $3 million in the last two years. This saving was put into the general reserve and used to pay down the City’s retirement system unfunded liability. The City’s solid financial position has also allowed the City to begin the process of long term planning to preserve Claremont for future generations.

Last year, The City Council’s theme was “Moving Forward.” Since that presentation, the City has moved forward on several major projects including a potential acquisition of the water system, the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park Master Plan, Public Art Master Plan, Foothill Boulevard Master Plan, and Sustainability Master Plan. This year, the City Council will make critical decisions on these issues.

This year the City will also work with businesses, property owners, and developers on extending its economic sales tax base. Developments are in process for Auto center Drive and a mixed use development is planned for the Village west. Several housing developments will also break ground this coming year.

During his presentation, Mayor Nasiali also presented Outstanding Partnership awards to the Claremont Chamber of Commerce, the Claremont Unified School District and the Claremont Colleges.

Claremont’s Future is in Good Standing

Networking Tip: Conversation Starters that get ResultsBy: Peter LisoskieWe all talk to people. The problem is many times we say the wrong things. We are not afraid to talk to people. Especially when it comes to saying, “Hi, how are you, nice weather we’re having today.” But there’s a big gap between saying, “Hi, how are you?” And “would you like to become my client or customer?” And that big gap scares us. For many people, it’s hard to transition from friendly social talk to introducing your business into the conversation without feeling like a pushy salesperson. We need to, “break the ice” and introduce our business into the conversation in a socially acceptable way.If we don’t know how to do this gracefully, we simply keep our business top secret. And hope, that someone will eventually ask us how to become a customer or client. We don’t want to ruin our relationships with people, but if we don’t get this right, then we won’t bring in any new business. Here’s a cool secret. The only difference between the people that have unlimited prospects when they are networking with others and those who don’t… is what they say. Knowing the exact words to say is the skill everyone needs to learn. You see, we all have a good attitude. We have goals. We know what we want to build our business. We’re motivated. We have all these things. The only thing we don’t have are the skills of exactly what to say and exactly what to do. The good news is that we can learn them. But first, before we get into learning more about these conversation starters, let me tell you a story about how I came to find out about these along with a little lesson about your brain. It was five years ago and I was working on a new bioscience technology product when I ran into a couple of neuroscientists. Neuroscientists specialize in using technology to study the brain. I was specifically interested in what they had to say when it came to learning about how the brain actually makes purchase decisions and it’s not what you think. You see, neuroscience has only been around for the last decade or so. Before that we didn’t have the technology like EEG and FMRI to peak inside the skull to see what is actually going on with the brain. And now we do. I figured, if I could assimilate all this research into

practical sales tools of what to say and do that fit with how the brain actually makes purchase decisions, I’d be on to something big.Your BrainIt’s the most powerful and complex force known to mankind. To start to understand the power in these conversation starters I’ll share with you, we first need to understand the basics of how the brain operates when making a purchase decision. While scientists have identified many parts of the brain, there are three primary centers that are responsible for different roles in thought, emotion, memory, and purchase decision making. These are the Cortex, Limbic System, and Crocodile Brain. The Cortex is

responsible for all conscious rational thought and data processing. When you speak benefits and features to a person, they process them with the Cortex – primarily the NeoCortex which sits right behind your forehead. The Limbic System, or middle part of your brain, holds both the Amygdala and Hypothalamus and is responsible

for processing emotions. The Hypothalamus’ function is to work with the Amygdala in producing different chemical elixirs in the brain that allow us to feel euphoria and happiness or fear and anxiety. The Crocodile Brain is the oldest part of your brain and sits right below the Limbic System at the base of your brain. It’s called the Crocodile Brain because it is very similar to the brain in crocodiles. Its chief function is to help you survive. Its function is fight, flight, and reproduction. In other words, scientists have taught us that the Crocodile Brain is always scanning to answer the following two primal questions, “Will it kill me?” and “Can I mate with it?” And it is a cognitive miser and doesn’t want much to do with anything related to thinking or data analysis like the Cortex.

Your EgoAnother important element in purchase decisions is related to your identity and that is your Ego. The Ego wants three primary things – connection, appreciation, and significance. It’s constantly looking to satisfy its desire for connection, appreciation, and significance and later in this article; I’ll show you how certain conversation starters satisfy the Ego’s need for these three things.

Page 5: HOW TO BETTER REACH YOUR DESIRED …96bda424cfcc34d9dd1a-0a7f10f87519dba22d2dbc6233a731e5.r41.…can better reach your desired customers and enrich your business. The Claremont Chamber

www.claremontchamber.org page 5

Why should you care about learning about the three parts of your brain and ego? Here’s why. Neuroscientists, through research using EEG and FMRI technologies, now know that we all make purchase decisions using a combination of our Crocodile Brain, Limbic System, and Ego – not the rational Cortex. What we had been taught about selling with benefits, features, data, charts, and graphs is all wrong. We must appeal to survival, emotion, and connection – the CrocBrain, Limbic System, and Ego. Survival is not what it used to be in the cave man days. Today’s survival is

tied to representative threats to financial, emotional, appreciation, connection, and significance. If the CrocBrain senses any threat to survival, especially in a sales sort of way, the Sales Filter goes up and mistrust and no thank you eventually emerges. If the Ego senses it is not connected or appreciated in any way, it is on “high alert” to gain connection or appreciation to keep our identity in balance. So now that you have a basic understanding that purchase decisions are made with the CrocBrain, Limbic System, and Ego, I’m going to share with you two powerful elements in any conversation starter to freeze the brain, keep the sales filter down, and strike interest – that is curiosity and connection. Why? With curiosity, the CrocBrain must know more to see if what you are saying is a survival threat or not. And the Ego always wants to be connected in some way so if it senses a disconnect, it will strive to reconnect. When you get a mastery of conversation starters using curiosity and connection, you can add emotional reward to stimulate the Limbic System and the Hypothalamus to flood the brain with dopamine – a euphoric chemical elixir to the brain. Here are some examples of CrocBrain Conversation Starters formulas that keep the Sales Filter down and excite the Ego to desire connection:“I just found out….insert a benefit statement.” The usual response is, “Tell me more.” I just found out…stimulates curiosity, keeping the Sales Filter down, and puts the Ego in a tailspin as it wants to find out to be connected.Examples using “I just found out…”:

Nutrition: I just found out how we can have more energy than our grandchildren.Financial Planner: I just found out how to protect your retirement if you get sick.Architect: I just found out how to get the contractors paid early.In¬-Home Care: I just found out how to get assistance to pay for mom and dad’s care. The next CrocBrain Conversation Starter is used when you get asked, “What do you do for a living?” Your goal is to get the typical response, “Oh really, how does that work?”Remember, people react to what you say. The reaction can be one of disinterest or interest but either way you’re going to get a reaction. So wouldn’t it be in your favor to get a reaction of interest? So how do you get interest? Use this simple formula when asked, “What do you do for a living?”“I show people how to…+ solve a problem”The usual response is, “Oh really, how does that work?” Why? Again, curiosity and connection.Examples:Financial Planner: I show people how to retire early at full pay.Chiropractor: I show people how to sleep like a baby every night.Skin Care: I show people how to reduce the bags under their eyes naturally.Salon Owner: I show people how to choose the best hairstyle for their body.CPA: I show people how to get paid $100 or more each week by the government.

Peter Lisoskie, owns WaterWorks, and is a new member of the chamber. After leaving executive positions for product development companies, Mr. Lisoskie spent the last 15 years producing four million dollar plus small business startups and applied his CrocBrain Selling Techniques to help his businesses prosper. Now he consults, speaks, and trains business owners all over the globe to apply CrocBrain Selling to dramatically improve sales.
