Thank you for your interest in activating your vagus nerve naturally by using your nonverbal language (postures, gestures, facial expressions, and vocalizations). These seven pages offer you more information about the theory of Nonverbal Language Integration (NvLI), ending with ways to exercise your vagus nerve directly. Page 4 has a script covering the basics of the theory. Page five has the Progressive Vagus Nerve Exercise for toning the vagus nerve. Page 7 has an illustration of the parts of the body that the vagus nerve serves. However, I hope you will read these first three pages about NvLI before beginning. NvLI is not just a theory regarding how certain nonverbal language behaviors activate the vagus nerve naturally to lessen levels of stress so our bodies and minds can be more at ease. It also provides the “how” by including many of these stress-reducing maneuvers to exercise. My successful career as a speech-language pathologist since 1976 and my life experiences are what provided me with the knowledge, skills, expertise, and curiosity to develop this theory and the motivation and ability to share it with you. MY CREDENTIALS I hold a Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in speech-language pathology by the American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA). I have a CA license in speech-language pathology and a CA specialized credential for speech and hearing therapy. Due to our loss of a teenage child in 2000, I went to a post-graduate school and earned a doctorate of ministry (D.Min.) in 2006. My emphasis was on universal principals of grieving, recovery, creativity, and resilience. While I am a speech-language pathologist providing therapy services in California, NvLI is my educational platform for teaching practitioners and the general public (children and adults) worldwide. I often provide this training as a mentoring service to practitioners and as a public service. This is how I can “give back” to my profession: helping the therapists and informing the public about speech-language pathology. That means this website is intended for all. AHUMBLETHEORYWhileNonverbalLanguageIntegrationmayseemtoworklikemagic,itisnotmagicalatall.NonverbalLanguageIntegration(NvLI)isahumbletheoryforexercisingthevagusnervebecausewecanusewhatourbodiesdonaturallyasexercisesforbecomingcalmerandmoreattentive.Simplyput,certainnaturalbehaviorsactivatethevagusnerveandreturnustofeelingsaferafteranimmediateperceivedthreatpasses.Thisprocessbywhichfears,worries,andsadnesssubsideinvolvestheparasympatheticnervoussystem.Thevagusnerveoverseestheparasympatheticnervoussystem.(ReadmoreunderBuildingUponthePolyvagalTheory).Vagusmeans“wandering”inGreek.Thevagusnervegoesfromthebrainstemtotheearand“wanders”downtothereproductiveorgans.Itdoesnotinvolvethespinalcolumn.(Seetheillustrationonpage7).THEVAGUSBRAKEMorespecifically,thetheoryofNvLIdiscoveredaninterrelationshipbetweentheomohyoidmuscle,specificnonverballanguagebehaviors,andthevagusnerve.AsexplainedwithinthePolyvagalTheorybyStephenPorges,Ph.D.,thevagusnerveservesasabraketolowerthesympatheticnervoussystem’sadrenalinproductionforfightingorfleeingwhenthereisnolongerimmediatepersonaldanger.Heartrategoesbacktonormalanddigestionincreases.ThetheoryofNvLIidentifiesthenatural“pedal”ofthisbraketobespecificnonverballanguagebehaviorsthatinvolveomohyoidmuscleinnervation.Insomemanner,thesestress-reducingmaneuversmayactivatetheproductionofnitricoxide,whichthentriggersthevagusbrake.AccordingtothePolyvagalTheory,thevagusnerveputsabrakeonstressfulreactionssothattheautonomicnervoussystemgoesbacktotheusualstateofrest,digest,andsocialengagement.Thisistheparasympatheticnervoussystem,whichisimportantforhomeostasisorequilibrium.NvLIidentifiesthisstateasrapport;aharmoniousrelationshipwithinthebody,withothers,andwithoneself.TONINGTHEVAGUSNERVEHealthybodiesareinthisbalancedstatenaturallysothatwecanbeinrapportwithothers(babies,children,peers,theelderly,andevenpets)orwithourselves.However,prolongedstress(sympatheticnervoussystemactivation)cancausethevagusnervetoloseitstone.Thiscancauseoursystemstobecomeoveractive.Bloodpressuremayriseunnecessarily(suchaswhitecoatanxiety)orremainhigh(hypertension).Oursystemsmaybeoveractiveingeneral.Ouroverallhealth,wellness,andabilitytorelatetoothersandlearncanbecomejeopardized.ThegoodnewsisthetheoryofNvLIexplainshowitisthatthevagusnervecanbeexercisedandstrengtheneddirectlyandsimply.Nospecialtrainingisneededtomastercomplexconceptsorcomplicatedexercises.Thisisbecausetheexercisesinvolvedoingvoluntarilywhatourbodiesalreadydonaturally.Anditdoesnotrequireanyphysicalendurance;evenbabiesdoitnaturally.ThetheoryofNvLIandtheexercisesareapplicableandaccessibletoallbecauseourbodiesalreadyactivatethevagusnervemanytimesduringthedaytoreducelevelsofstress.ThismeansthatNvLIisagatewayforhopeforbeingabletolessenourworriesandfearsbecausewecanexercisethevagusnervevoluntarilythoughspecificnonverballanguagebehaviorstoimprovethetoneoftheparasympatheticnervoussystem.Wecandothisanywhereandanytimetolowerthelevelsofourstressandreturntofeelingsafer.Continuedexercisehelpstomaintaingreaterlevelsofcalmnessandpositivityduringuncertainty.

NORIGHTORWRONGWAY.JUSTTRYIT.Feelingsafeistherightofall.Ihavevalidatedinmybookthatvoluntarilyexercisingnonverballanguagebehaviorsthatstimulatetheomohyoidmuscleandactivatethevagusnerveisanaturalwaythatthebodyreturnstohomeostasisandbuildsresilience.NvLIinvolvesusingthisnaturalprocessasatool.Everyonehasthistool,thereforeeveryonehastherighttolearnaboutandexplorethistheory.Sincethesestress-reducingmaneuversarewhatwedonaturallyalready,thereisnorightorwrongwaytodothesepostures,gestures,orfacialexpressions.Justtryit.Youcanusethefollowingscripttoincreaseyourunderstandingandsharethetheorywithfamily,yourfriends,co-workersoremployees.YoucandotheProgressiveVagusNerveActivationExercisealoneandleadothersinitaswell.Feelfreetopassiton.However,Iwouldlovetohearaboutyourfindingsandideasforapplicationorevenresearch.ContactmethroughEmailMe.GENERALNvLISCRIPTHaveyouheardofhowoursystemsgointofightorflight?Thishastodowiththeautonomicnervoussystem,whichisfunctioningallthetimewithoutourawareness.Whensomethingdisturbinghappens,oursympatheticnervoussystemisactivatedandourbodiesproduceadrenalin.Thatcausesustomoveintoahigherstateofstressinpreparationforpowerfulaction.Ifatruedangerexists,wewilleitherfightorrunaway.Ifthereisnoimmediatethreattooursafety,ournervoussystemisdesignedtomovebackintoastateofease.Thisistheparasympatheticnervoussystem.Atonetimeitwasbelievedwewouldonlybeinoneofthesetwostates,thatthestateswereantagonisticofeachother.Butthathaschanged.AccordingtothePolyvagalTheorybypsychologistStephenPorges,Ph.D.,thesympatheticnervoussystemdoesnotjustinvolvethefightorflightreactionstriggeredbyadrenalin.Italsoincludesthestateofimmobilizationtriggeredbythedorsalvagusnerve.Thisistheactionoffreezingorbeingmotionlesswhenthereisathreat.Itisthemostprimitivereactionandwhatoftenhappensfirst. Thethirdsystemistheparasympatheticnervoussystem,whichisregulatedbytheventralvagusnerve.Theventralvagusnervereturnsthebodyandmindtoastateofbalanceforoptimalrapportandsocialengagementbyputtingabrakeontheadrenalin.Insteadofoneortheother,thereneedstobeahealthybalancebetweenthesympatheticandparasympatheticnervoussystemsforsocialengagement,concentration,focus,healthyimagination,interpersonalcommunication,andlearning.Thisiscalledhomeostasisorequilibrium. language.Wemoveintocertainpostures,gesture,ormakevariousvocalizationswhenweexperiencesomethingchallengingbutnotimmediatelylifethreatening.Mostofthemaremisunderstood–liketheyawn. Neurosciencehasdiscoveredthatyawnhelpsustore-engage.Insteadofitbeingasignofboredom,theyawnisactuallyanaturalbehaviorthatstimulatestheprecuneus.Thisisareaofthebrainthatpromotesattention,focus,memory,motorplanning,andreasoning.Theyawnrequiresmovementoftheomohyoidmuscle,whichthenactivatesthevagusnerve.Thus,movementsthatstimulatetheomohyoidmuscleareactivatingthevagusnerve.Placing the fingertips on the neck is a natural gesture when we are disturbed but not directlythreatened.Theomohyoidmuscle’smovementcanbefeltjustaboveyourcollarbone.Practicefeelingitsmovementwhenyouyawn,grunt,orblowthroughpurseslips.Payattentiontohowyoufeel.PROGRESSIVEVAGUSNERVEACTIVATIONEXERCISEBeforedoingthisexerciseyoumaywantto“measure”yourcurrentsensationsofstressusinga0-10scale.The0representsnostressandacompletesenseofcalmnessandreadiness.Thenumber10represents themostextremesenseofstressand feelinghighlydisrupted.Thenratehowyoufeelafterdoingthisprogressiveexercise.Ifyouwereat0,doyoufindyoufeelevenbetter?There are many other natural nonverbal language behaviors that activate the vagus nerve. Thisexercisescombinestenofthem.Itgoesfromyourtoestothetopofyourhead.Thinkofhowyoufeelnow.Thencheckinwithyourselfafterdoingtheexercise. Ittakes lessthantwominutestoexerciseyourvagusnervethisway.Focusonyourtoesandbringthemtowardsyournose.Imagineyouarestandingontiptoe.Wemustbecalmtostretchandreachupforsomething.Holdthetoes-to-the-nosepositionforacountoften.Now,bringyourfocusupwardstoyourlowerbelly.Imaginethatyouarepreventingyourselffromurinating.Thisiscalledakegel.Wehavetobecalmwhenlookingforabathroom.Holdforacountoften.Bringyourfocustoyourdiaphragm.Takeadeepbreathandthensighoutthroughpursedlips.Keepthediaphragmstillforacountoffive.Weholdourbreathtopreparetofightorrun.WeletitoutandinhalemomentarilyaftereverythingisallclearNow,bringyourattentiontoyourheart.Imaginethatyoucanfeelthebeatofyourheart.Researchshowsthatpeoplewhoareawareofheartbeatshavelessstress.Imaginecountingtenheartbeats.Pretendoneslowlongyawnfollowedbyasigh.Theyawnactivatestheprecuneus.Focusonyournoseandwidenyournostrilswhileimaginingsmellinganinterestingaroma.Breatheinslowly.Thenosetrulydoes“know.”

Keepyourheadfacingforward.Moveyoureyestothefarrightandholdforacountoften.Now,moveyoureyestotheleftandholdforacountoften.Wemustremaincalmwhenmultitasking,suchaslookingforwardwhilealsoglancingtothesidetoseewhatishappening.Ideallyayawnfollows.Moveyourattentiontojustaboveyournoseandbetweenyoureyebrows.Holdaninquisitivefrownforacountoften.Wemustbecalmtoconcentrateonsomethingnewthatinterestsus.Andnow,pretendtosneeze.Noticehowyoubringyourtoestowardsyounose,doakegel,tightenyourdiaphragm,wrinkleyounose,andfurrowyourbrowduringthelong“ah”followedbyreleaseduringtheshort“chew.”Allowingyourfocustogotothetopofyourhead,gentlypatyourselfontheheadforhavingexercisedyourvagusnervepathways.Thisrelatestothedivereflex,whichprotectsthebrainbypreventingslosh.Nowhowdoyoufeel?Youdonothavetodoalloftheseexercisestoactivatethevagusnerve.Justonedoesitbecauseitistheactivationoftheomohyoidmusclethattriggerstheactivation.Therearemanymorebehaviors,andevenvocalizations,thattriggerthevagusnerveaswell.Theseareinmybook.However,theyarenotnecessarytoknowtoexerciseyourvagusnerve.Isuggestthatyoudotheprogressiveexerciseoneortwiceaday.Thenpickyourfavoriteone.Doitthroughouttheday.Touchyourneckandbegintofeeltheomohyoidmuscleactivate.Slowly,youwillbegintorecognizethatyourhavecertainhabitualactionsthatyoudowhenstartled,disappointedorangered.Youwillcometorealizethattheyactuallyhelpyoufeelcalmintimesofstressorwhenchallengedbecausetheyactuallyactivatetheomohyoidmuscle.Manyvocalizationsunderthecategoryofprofanityactivatetheomohyoidmuscle.Shruggingtheshoulders,bowingthehead,closingtheeyestight,twiddlingthethumb,clappingthehands,pinchingthebridgeofthenose,andsniffingarejustafew.Youwillbeabletoidentifymoreandmorebehaviorsthatactivatethevagusnervebybecomingawareofthemovementofyouromohyoidmuscle.Thenextpagehasapictureofthepartsofthebodythatthevagusnerveactivatesaspartoftheparasympatheticnervoussystem.

Artcopyrighted©byDorothyBohntinskyThe vagus nerve returns the organs of the body back to the state of rest, digest,socialization,reproductionandengagementinactivitiesofdailyliving.Itoriginatesinthebrain stem runs from the ears down to the reproductive organs (comingling with thepelvicnerves).Itis80%sensoryand20%motor.Itsmotorfunctionsinvolvethelarynxforvoiceandtheswallow.Thevagusnervedoesnottravelinthespinalcord.
