Before the Internet…..•Invented in the 1840’s was a TELEGRAPH. •It was used a lot by the U.S. government during the American Civil War.

• Signals were sent through wires that were established in wide distances.

•Signals were sent using Morse Codes. These are dots and dashes that had long and short signals for proper codes set up by the sender and the receiver.

Then the INTERNET was born….what i s i t any way?

The INTERNET is a network

of networks, joining

government, university and

private computers together

and providing a system for

the use of E-mail, file

archives, hypertext

documents, information

databases and other

computational resources.

It is also a vast collection of computer networks which form and act as a single huge network to transport of data and messages across distances which can be anywhere from the same place to anywhere in the world.

Lets refresh our memory…

Year 1968 DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) engages in a contract with BBN (Bolt Beranek & Newman) to create ARPAnet.

Year 1970 The 1st five nodes were set-up at: UCLA, Stanford, UC SantaBarbara, BBN and University of Utah

Year 1974 The 1st TCP specification was made by Vinton CerfTCP is Transmission Control Protocol : it is the basic languageof communication in the internet.

Year 1984 On the 1st of January, the INTERNET with 1000 hosts all in onegroup converts to TCP/IP for its messaging. TCP/IP is defined as Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol.

Year 1989 The WWW or better known as World Wide Web was born

Year 1995 The age of Commerce begins on the Internet

Internet FathersClaude Shannon is known as the Father of Modern Information Theory. He created the idea that info can be represented as 1s and Os or BITS and its transmission in BITS per second.

J.C.R. Licklider developed the idea of a universal network which inspired his successors to work on the ARPANET. His concepts also led to the idea of the NETIZEN.

Paul Baran developed thefield of packet switching networks while doing research at the historic RAND ORGANIZATION.

Lawrence Roberts was the ARPANET program manager and led the overall system design.

More of the “Net” fathers…Vinton Cerf is the co-designer of the TCP/IP networking protocol. He worked on a lot of DARPA projects. He is also a tireless advocate & speaker who educates people about the internet. He is also the founder and chairman of the Internet Society.

Robert Kahn is the co-designer of the TCP/IP. In 1972 he gave a demo of an ARPANET connecting 40 different computers, making the network widely known to people for the 1st time. He is thePresident of the Corp for National Research Incentives (CNRI).

Christian Huitema joined Microsoft in February 2000 as an “architect” in the Windows Networking Communication Group who is in charge of the Ipv6 & TCP/IP evolution.

Tim Berners Lee is the inventor of the WORLD WIDE WEB and HTML and was the founding director of Image Computer Systems. He also directs W3 Consortium, an open forum of organizations whose mission is to realize the full potential of the web.
