Spa treatments can be confusing! After all, there are all these different names, like skin remodeling, IPL Photo Facial, vasculyse, and microdermabrasion, and you might not have heard of them before. Some of them can even sound a little intimidating! But don’t worry! In this first in a series of blog articles, I will take you by the hand and help you understand more about these spa services. This week we’ll take a look at microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion is a popular and exciting new facial treatment. It has many purposes, but because it’s so new, there are many questions about it. Here are some of the most common questions I have been asked about microdermabrasion, and of course, the answers!

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical procedure designed to help exfoliate your skin. From a technical standpoint, what happens is a device bounces abrasive crystal flakes off the skin on your face, which removes the outermost layer of skin. The device then sucks away the skin cells, as well as the crystals, revealing healthy skin beneath.

That might sound painful, but it’s actually quite gentle. Because your outer layer of skin is made up entirely of dead skin cells, you won’t be losing much living tissue, if any at all.

What Are the Benefits of Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion helps clear out your pores, removing the dead skin cells, dirt, oil, and other impurities which can get stuck in our skin from living a city lifestyle. Microdermabrasion also helps stimulate the production of collagen in your body, which means your skin will rejuvenate more quickly. If you want to get rid of fine lines, or your skin is just starting to look tired, a microdermabrasion can make a big difference!

What are Microdermabrasion Crystals Made of?

The crystals are made from aluminum oxide crystals. They’re naturally occurring, colourless, and odourless, similar to a sapphire. They’re pretty much as safe as possible.

Chemical Peel vs Microdermabrasion

Many note the fact that a chemical glycol peel and a microdermabrasion treat similar issues. So when should you opt for one over the other? In general, they both accomplish the same thing. A chemical glycol peel is designed to remove the top layer of your skin in the same way a microdermabrasion is. But a microdermabrasion is geared toward giving your skin a brighter glow. If you want to actually change the look of the surface of your skin, a chemical glycol peel is the way to go. A microdermabrasion is generally gentler on the skin, so if you have overly sensitive skin, a microdermabrasion is the better option. I hope this article cleared up some of your questions about microdermabrasion.
