Speed Stories

If have class time!

In your journal…

• Table of contents: “Speed Stories”

• Next clean page: “Speed Story”

• Then glue in the half page.

• On the bottom half of the page is where you are going to write your group’s story.

Speed Stories

Objective: To measure motion on a line graph.

Essential Question: How is motion measured and represented on a graph?

Our activity for today:

1. In your groups you will create a story that matches the graph.

2. Write down the story on your page.

Take a look at this page:

Notice the numbers?

How to get started

• Look at the graph and the overall motion that is happening.

• What is happening at 1?

• What about at 2?

• And 3?

What is happening in the graph?1. Constant speed, away

from the original starting place.

2. At rest, no motion

3. Slower speed, traveling back in the direction came from

4. Faster speed (look at the slope of the line)

5. At rest

6. The fastest speed shown on this graph, back to the starting place

How to set up the storyExample:

1. Abby rode her bike to her friends house at a constant speed

2. She stayed there for 15 min to feed the cat. (at rest)

3. She realized she dropeed her

USE THE VOCAB

WORDS!!

Speed Stories• Remember, you have information on graphs in

your notes and packet.

• Use the newly learned vocabulary words

• Both partners write the story in their journals.

White board use

• You and your partner may use the white boards to write down your story first.

• After you have decided on the story, then write the final version in your own journal

Who wants to share out?

• If you have a great (school appropriate) story, let’s share out.

• I will see if I can draw the graph on the board based on your story.

• Groups – you do the same!

• Draw the graph that matches the story told –will it end up as the same as the original???

Clean Up

1. Journals away

2. White board cleaned off

3. Marker capped

4. Fresh paper towel

5. Board and marker in middle of table.
