How did you attract/address your audience?

(Include evidence of audience feedback)

A non-conventional representation of the teenage social group• From the start my aim was to challenge convention and represent teenagers in a positive

light compared to the negativity associated with this group often portrayed in the media. • The images of the three strong girls dominating my magazine with the strong medium

shots and enticing gaze suggests they have aspirations and are prepared to work hard to achieve what they want in life. However the teenage conventions are still present by their interest in fashion and relaxed interview style, conveying they’re down to earth and relatable to many readers.

• I think my target audience of 16-18 year old females will be attracted to this non-conventional representation of their social group because it’s unusual for the media to portray them in a positive light because the media focuses on the negative minority. So they’ll like the fact my magazine is challenging this and would want to contribute towards a product with this view point, in hope that this would encourage others to challenge society’s perception to.

• My focus group commented on the fact they liked how the social group was represented.

Sophisticated colour scheme

• Creating a grown up yet quirky colour scheme for me was important because we associate genders and ideas with colours; in my primary research when I analysed Teen Now magazine the dominant colours were pink and yellow and these connote girls, happiness and innocence. Therefore I wanted the colours in my media product to connote sophistication so by playing around with colours I was able to choose black/white, coral and teal. • The black/white conveys the rock element to my magazine, with the coral and

teal being more developed colours than pink and blue so they show the diversity in the pop genre as well as connoting maturity but fun. These colours are primarily gender neutral and from my focus group I found out they fulfil this especially on the front cover; the pink on the dps swaying my magazine towards the female gender. • From the ‘hot desking’ activity in lesson I got many comments on the use of

‘good colours’ which made it ‘visually exciting’ which supports the use of colours I chose.

Articles and features my target audience would be interested in- found out by survey analysis• I knew that the main element to attract my target audience

to read my magazine was to include articles and features they’d want to read, after all that’s the purpose of a magazine. So from my survey analysis I found out many were interested in interviews, new releases/upcoming artists and festivals, information on careers and gossip about music celebrities. • I therefore made sure I include at least one cover line on all

these areas on my front cover, to make sure there’s an element in my magazine which would attract all teens- the feedback I gathered from hot desking agreed with my use of a range of interesting articles and features.

Having mostly conventional features with some challenging conventions which builds up mybrand and house style to create a unique style

• The conventional features such as the masthead being at the top of the page, use of the skyline, use of a medium close up image for the front cover with the girls looking directly into the shot, coverlines being primarily on the left hand side of the page, structured cp and dps with columns used to separate text, use of the stand first and drop caps establishes my magazine as a magazine product however the challenged representation of teenagers builds up the brand for my magazine being slightly rebellious against society and not afraid to be different. • This along with the continued colour scheme as sophisticated style creates my

house style with my ‘beats’ masthead symbolising this. My focus group commented on the fact they thought my house style was continued throughout my entire magazine and that the slight change in colour keeps it fresh and interesting.

New type of hybrid genre- rock/pop

• The basis to create my magazine to have a unique style was down to the hybrid genre of rock/pop. The gap in the market for this kind of convergence was highlighted by my survey so saw the potential to create something to fill this gap and attract a new type of reader to the magazine industry, who have nothing else particularly aimed at them.• Therefore this concept of rock/pop is one of the most important elements to

attract my target audience as the identity of the magazine rests of the genre it presents. • From my focus group I gathered my target audience liked the hybrid genre as

they commented on the colour scheme and images being effective; these factors were to convey rock/pop genre so the subtext of these comments is that my mixed genre concept was effective.
