WHO CAN DO TALK RADIO?

ANYONE CAN DO IT! I am living proof that no matter what your age,

location or talents talk radio is available for you to pursue. If a grandmother

in her 70’s can get over 3.4 million listeners to date, then anyone can do it.

Remember….my mantra….If you think it, then you can do it.

WHAT IS TALK RADIO

n. noun

1. Broadcast radio programming consisting of talk shows, often including

telephone conversations with members of the audience.

Talk radio is a radio format containing discussion about topical issues. Most

shows are regularly hosted by a single individual, and often feature interviews with

a number of different guests.

Talk radio typically includes an element of listener participation, usually by

broadcasting live conversations between the host and listeners who "call in"

(usually via telephone) to the show. Listener contributions are usually screened by

a show's producer(s) in order to maximize audience interest and, in the case of

commercial talk radio, attract advertisers.

Generally, the shows are organized into segments, each separated by a pause for

advertisements; however, in public or non-commercial radio, music is sometimes

played in place of commercials to separate the program segments. Variations of

talk radio include conservative talk, hot talk, liberal talk (increasingly known as

Progressive talk) and sports talk.

While talk radio has historically been associated with broadcast radio, starting

around 2005 the technology for Internet-based talk-radio shows became cost

effective in the form of live internet website streaming and podcasts.

Now, it is possible for an individual to use a variety of services to host an Internet-

based talk-radio show without carriage by a traditional radio station. Talk radio

listening is now enjoyed not only on radios, but a wide variety of other devices and

services including mobile phones and PCs using iTunes.

WHY DO IT

This will be one of the most exciting things you will ever do!

Start with your passion…something you love talking about!

Decide where to do your show on a podcast or internet streaming.

Create a Brand…so very, very important!

Increase Name Recognition…….

Promote Your Products

Become a Celebrity

Entertain, Inform & Inspire

January’s Story beginning LA now with over 3.4 million listeners to date

WHY IS IT SO EFFECTIVE:

INTERNET RADIO IS THE MOST INEXPENSIVE AND EFFECTIVE

WAY

TO ADVERTISE YOUR BUSINESS, PRODUCT, OR SERVICES.

Your Internet Customers will hear your message!

Demographics: Listeners Looking for Success!

Nearly half (49%) of Americans over 12 listen to Internet.

Nearly 89 million Americans listened to online radio last month.

Internet reached 32% of active radio listeners monthly.

iHeartRadio Talk Archived 24/7 with constant streaming with over 55+ million

subscribers is broadcast to over 55 million people world-wide which means you

have a greater potential to reach a much larger client base.

Keep in mind, that according to recent statistics, people need to be exposed to an

ad more than 20 times (it used to be 7) before they act on it.

Page 6: How a Low Tech Internet Radio Show Creates Audience of 3.4 ...rf-talk-radio.s3.amazonaws.com/Real-Fast-Talk-Radio-ebook.pdf · As a host, you’ll find that there are an infinite

6

Obviously, the more exposure you receive the greater the benefits to you and your

audience.

Mission:

Your mission describes how you will provide value to your listeners. Having a

clear and listener-focused mission will help you maintain a consistent voice, make

high-quality editorial decisions, and help you build your brand. Remember,

successful podcasts are relevant, delightful, well-crafted, unique, and have

relatable hosts. Your mission statement should reflect these values and serve as

your compass. As a host, you’ll find that there are an infinite number of topics and

approaches to choose from. Your mission can help you make choices that benefit

your listener.

Take a moment to think about what role you’d like to play in the lives of your

listeners.

Once you craft your mission, write it down and stick to it for at least 5 episodes.

WHEN TO DO IT:

In 2013, Apple surpassed 1 billion subscriptions for podcasts via iTunes. Edison

Research found that over 39 million Americans listen to radio podcasts each

month. Moreover, one in five listeners consumes six or more episodes each week.

You have the opportunity to enter a space that doesn’t have well-defined rules and

make a name for yourself. This is the time to experiment and find your voice. You

can emerge as a leader if you focus on the experience of your listener and use high

production values.

Start right now.

Love chit-chatting with people

Be able to treat each show like a phone call with your best friend

Someone that people listen too.

Connect to a diverse audience

I love to meet people who have discovered their passion, something they love

doing so much that they would do it for free without pay and doing something that

will help other people.

The best radio hosts initially relied on someone who is more experienced that

wants to share their expertise to help you get started., to grow and to develop their

natural abilities. No need to try and re-invent the wheel in this industry.

Remember in Radio: It’s critical to know how the radio broadcasting industry

actually works, thinks and operates. Understanding the mindset that drives the

industry is important if you want to be successful.

Bottom Line:

It’s not just WHAT you know …..but WHO you know.

How to meet WHO YOU NEED TO KNOW?

You need to meet someone who is already doing it and is successful.

How To Create Your Show

Consider the listener you’d like to reach.

• Which gender is likely to be interested?

• What age group?

• What’s a good description of your intended audience? (Busy moms?

Survival preppers? French chefs?)

• What are their unique attributes?

• How many people fit this profile?

• Is the group too broad or narrow?

Choose a Show Title

Include Your Brand plus what the show is about

9

Brand can be your name or what you do

Title ….26 characters

What interests you?

Who is your audience/your market?

Who do you want to interview?

Who do you enjoy listening too?

At the end of the day, your title needs to distill your mission in very few words.

Here are a few guidelines to help you select a name for your show:

1 Make sure the name is easy to say out loud and read in print.

2 The name should give potential listeners an idea of what they’ll hear if they

press play. It’s possible to go too far with inside jokes.

3 Check to see if there are other podcasts or media properties that share the

same name.

4 Make sure you can reserve social media properties (Twitter handle,

Facebook page, Tumblr name, etc). You might also consider reserving a

URL in the future - see if one is available with your desired name.

Good Topics:

You should think of your podcast as an ongoing conversation with your listeners.

You want your show to be broad enough to attract lots of listeners but not so broad

that it’s generic.… “Entertainment”

New, recent events

Controversial issues

Book Authors

Celebrity Gossip

Humor with hope

Self-Help

Health & Fitness

Create Great Content: We’re talking about content that is ranked highly in

Creating great content isn’t easy. Big hook!

Goal:

Interesting, Informative, and Inspiring

Eclectic, Exciting & Energizing

Amusing, Amazing & Astonishing

CREATE A SHOW FORMAT:

Host or Co-Host?

Depends on you. However I would start on your own and keep the co-host

opportunities and option when you are ready to invite future sponsors on your

show as co-host, guest/sponsors.

I do both, however my co-hosts are paid advertisers who visit with me once a

month and have their spots that are professionally done commercials played 84

times per month on 3 syndicated networks. Talk4Media @ iHeart Radio and

BlogTalkRadio.

Buy Your Radio Time Wisely:

If you are just beginning to test the waters, I recommend that you sign on to

BlogTalkRadio.com When I started out, I did just 30 minutes a week and that

always took my insane phone calls, especially when I was on the air LIVE and

really screwing things up.

Plus their program is financially suited to whatever you are willing to invest

in your new career……….it can even be for FREE!
