of various diseases affecting major body systems.

Notice: Students who repeat a course for a third or more times

may soon face significant tuition/fee increases at HCC and

other Texas public colleges and universities. Please ask your

instructor/counselor about opportunities for tutoring/other

assistance prior to considering course withdrawal or if you are

COURSE GOALS

1. Describe the role and process of pharmaceuticals on various diseases.

2. Interpret laboratory and diagnostic test.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

1. Given information on the major drug categories, the student will identify the following for each

category: the different classes of drugs, the standard

types of drugs, the normal drug dosages, uses, side

effects, and interactions.

2. Given information on ophthalmics, otics, and topicals, the student will identify and describe the various types,

their uses, side effects, and interactions.

3. Given information on toxicology, the student will identify and describe processes, treatments, and the

drugs/chemicals related to toxicology.

4. Given specialized patients such as: pediatric, prenatal, and geriatric, the student will identify and describe how

to prevent problems associated with drugs used in these

specialized cases.

5. Given information on drug therapy, the student is able to understand the use and side effects of prescription and

nonprescription drugs used to treat common disease states.

SCANS Competencies

C5 Acquires and evaluates information, F8 Decision Making, F1

Reading, F2 Writing, F9 Problem Solving, F5 Listening, F12

Reasoning

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

1. Course is taught via Eagle Online. 2. Students are to be prepared for class by answering

objectives to lessons and completing weekly quizzes.

3. Students are required to read all textbook assignments and work all problems.

EQUAL EDUCATIONAL & EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY

HCCS seeks to provide equal education opportunities without

regard to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age or

handicap.

ABILITY CHALLENGED STUDENTS

Any student with a documented disability (e.g. physical,

learning, psychiatric, vision, hearing, etc.) who needs to

arrange reasonable accommodations must contact the Disability

Services Office at the respective college at the beginning of

each semester. Faculty are authorized to provide only the

accommodations requested by the Disability Support Services

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Students taking Internet courses complete weekly assignments at

their own computers and communicate with their instructor by

electronic mail and other provided web-based technologies.

Students complete assignments, take tests, and complete all

other coursework just as they would in an on-campus class.

Instructor will have weekly on-line chats with students. Course

work will be submitted via the internet. Students must be in

attendance on campus for appointed times and major exams.

GRADING POLICY

Tests 20%

Group Assignments 5%

Individual Video Reviews 5%

Comprehensive Final exam 70%

Students absent from the class during the time of a major

examination for test will have NO MAKE-UP EXAMINATIONS, except

upon the discretion of the instructor. Students late for the

exam will be allowed to take the exam with the remaining

scheduled time. The percentage of each activity will weight in

the final grade regardless if the student participated in the

activity or test.

GRADING SCALE

90 - 100 A

80 - 89 B

74 and below F (No Ds will be given)

SYLLABUS

Syllabus is subject to change at the discretion of the

instructor.

Student is responsible for reading and understanding syllabus.

Student will send instructor an email stating,

“Dr. Tyson-Howard has reviewed the syllabus with me. I

understand all components therein. Should I choose to

withdraw from this course, I understand that it is my

responsibility to process the paperwork by the official

drop date”.

ASSIGNMENTS

Individual

Video Reviews

On various weeks, student will be assigned a webcast video to

watch. Student will prepare a one page double spaced typed

written summation of the video. Summation must include at least

the following:

1. Name of video

2. Condition(s) discussed

3. Methodology for diagnosing condition(s)

3. Treatment modalities including drugs and procedures

4. Implications for health information coding

Reports must be submitted in an MSWord document utilizing Eagle

Online assignment drop box. Assignments are due the Sunday

following corresponding lesson at 11pm.
