Housing Development Finance Conference
22 & 23 NOVEMBER, 2012Birchwood Hotel, Boksburg, Johannesburg
here is a need for South Africa and Africa as a whole to transform its housing
finance systems. The onus lies on policy makers and stakeholders within the
housing finance fraternity to find cutting edge and innovative solutions to the Tchallenges in the sector. Housing Finance as an investment tool is tasked with the
responsibility of the provision of housing construction, maintenance and housing
projects in general.
One cannot however ignore the challenges in the sector. In South Africa,It is estimated
that close to , 2.4 million people are in need of formal housing, and it is estimated 25% of
households in South Africa have no access to housing due to challenges associated
with affordability. Shelter and housing needs for the largest section of the population
remain unfulfilled – with the need still growing. Government alone cannot address the
housing backlog alone without the support and partnership of the building industry.
Stakeholders in the housing industry on the one hand, are in need of finance in ensuring
that the housing backlog is addressed. They are the faced with myriad problems which
cannot be not be resolved overnight. Issues they encounter are varied, from lack of
finance to limited funding to name a few.
In the quest to secure finance and find alternatives that could ease the financial burden
on the housing front, there is a need to consider alternative building technologies that
could be cost-effective and fast track housing projects, increase energy efficiencies and
also a way of addressing the housing backlog. A paradigm shift is therefore required in
the housing finance sector. Factors such as economic stability, government investment
and financial backing of lending institutions are vital in growing the industry. Housing
finance is but one of many key elements that need to be in place for successful
housing delivery to occur.
It is against this background that this conference has organised to explore financing
options available to the housing sector to examine alternative building technologies
available and to find ways of addressing these challenges.
