Hallite Seals’ product data sheets give information indicating the allowableextrusion gap a seal can see at pressure during its working life. The extrusion gap can be calculated using the tolerance build ups within thecylinder and any dilation that may occur under pressure.

Maximum extrusion gap = F max (see drawing below).F max is the maximum extrusion gap for the seal

Minimum metal to metal clearance = F min (see drawing below).

F min for cylinders with minimal side loading should be > 0.1mm (0.004”).

RodsMaximum extrusion gap F max = (ØD3 max + ØD2 max) - S min - Ød1 min

2

Minimum metal to metal clearance (extrusion gap) F min = S min -(ØD2 max - ØD3 min)

2

Rod Bearing Piston Bearing

PistonsMaximum extrusion gapF max = ØD1 max - S min - (Ød3 min + Ød2 min) + dilation

2Minimum metal to metal clearance (extrusion gap) F min = S min - (Ød3 max - Ød2 min)

2

Calculate both F max and F min.Ensure the F min is greater than 0.1mm (0.004”) and F max is less than the maximum extrusion gap stated on the seal data sheet at the application’s working pressure.

For built-in metal bearings, the extrusion gap calculation is simpler.

For F max:

Rod = ØD3 max - Ød1 min + dilationPiston = ØD1 max - Ød3 min + dilation

F min must be zero

Extrusion is closely linked to pressureand temperature. In general, thebest seal performance and life isprovided by specifying the smallestpossible extrusion gap.

The figures shown for the extrusiongap within the operating conditionsof Hallite’s product data sheets, relate to the maximum permissible, worst case situation with the gap allon one side.

Our quality control methods for material and manufacturingprocesses ensure that all seals leaving our factories are in acondition capable of giving a long and reliable service life.We have found from many years experience, thatpremature seal failure can be avoided if the followingrecommendations are considered at the design andmanufacturing stage of the cylinder:

1. Specify piston and gland bearings which areadequately proportioned to support the cylinder loads. As a result of mounting misalignments and / or theworking action of the cylinder, piston and gland bearingswill be subjected to side-loading, causing damage to therod or the tube surface and hence the seal, if thebearings are inadequate.

2. Ensure that seals are stored distortion free in a cool, dryand dark place prior to fitting.

3. Check that the seal housing is free from damage likelyto harm the seal. Remove all sharp edges and burrs frommetal parts, paying particular attention to ports, groovesand threads over or through which the seal passes duringassembly.

4. Clean all seal housing areas, ensuring that all metallicparticles and other contaminants have been removed.Check that other surfaces adjacent to the passage of theseal on fitting are also free of dirt, swarf or othercontaminants. Check that both static and dynamic

housing surface finishes meet specifications.

5. Where the difference between a thread diameter overwhich the seal must pass and the seal diameter is small, use some form of protection over the thread, such as afitting sleeve made of hard plastic.

6. Check that the seal is of the correct type, part numberand size, and that the specified material is correct. Ifthere is any doubt regarding the material contact yourlocal Hallite sales office.

7. Lubricate all seals and metal components liberally withclean operating fluid or a compatible grease prior toassembly. N.B. Silicone grease should not be used innormal hydraulic applications.

8. Where seals fitted to sub-assemblies, such as pistons, are awaiting further fitting operations, ensure that theseals are not subjected to any misaligned or localisedloading which will cause local deformation. Ensure thatsub-assemblies remain clean.

9. The use of metal levers is not recommended but shouldthey be used it is imperative that they are completelysmooth and free from nicks and burrs. When using themensure that the metal surfaces adjacent to the seal arenot damaged.

10. Flush the hydraulic system thoroughly beforeconnecting the cylinder to it.

Storage conditions

Most polymeric items including vulcanized rubber andother elastomers tend to change their properties duringstorage and may become unserviceable. This may bedue to hardening, softening, cracking, crazing or otherdegradation and may be the result of oxygen, ozone, light, heat and/or humidity.

The following recommendations indicate the most suit-able conditions for storing elastomeric items, whether asa single item or composite product.

1. TemperatureStorage temperatures should not exceed 75 F. Lowtemperatures are not permanently harmful provided therubber items are handled carefully and not distorted. When taken from low temperatures items should beraised to approximatley 85 F before they are used.

2. HumidityOptimum humidity is about 65% in a draft-free atmos-phere.

3. LightProtection from direct sunlight and strong artificial lightwith a high ultraviolet content is important. Unlesspacked in opaque containers, it is advisable to coverwindows with red or orange screens or coatings.

4. Oxygen and OzoneElastomeric items should be protected from circulating airwherever possible. As ozone is particularly harmful to rub-ber, storage rooms should be free from equipment thatmay give rise to electric sparks or discharge. Wrapping, storage in airtight containers or other suitable meansshould be used for vulcanised rubber items.

5. DeformationWhere possible, rubber items should be stored in arelaxed position, free from tension or compression. Layingthe item flat and avoiding suspension or crushing keeps itfree from strain and minimises deformation.

6. Contact with Liquid and Semi-Solid MaterialContact with liquids and semi-solid materials, particularlysolvents, such as oils or greases should be avoided unlessso packed by the manufacturer.

7. Contact with MetalsMetals such as manganese, iron and copper, or copperalloys can have a harmful effect on rubber. A layer ofpaper, polyethylene or cellophane will keep these sepa-rated.

8. Contact with Non-MetalsContact with other rubbers or creosotes should be avoid-ed.

9. Stock RotationElastomers should be stored for as short a period as possi-ble, and strict stock rotation should be practiced.

10. CleaningOrganic solvents such as trichloroethylene, carbon tetra-chloride and petroleum are the most harmful agents.Soap and water and methylated spirits are the leastharmful, and all parts should be dried at room tempera-ture before use.

11. Shelf LifeThe table shows the storage life of seal componentsmade from the more common materials under idealconditions. Storing under less than ideal conditions willreduce the life.

Careful inspection of the following should be madebefore installation after storage:

a. Mechanical damageb. Permanent distortionc. Cracks or surface crazingd. Tackiness or surface softening/hardening

The appearance of 'bloom' is relatively unimportant, except in certain non-toxic applications. Thin components (less than 1/16in/1.6mm) tend to bemore critically affected.

Surface roughness has a very important influence on thelife and leakage performance of a recipricating sealingsystem.

Note : The vertical scale is 40 times the Horizontal scale

Definitions

Many parameters can be used to describe surface finish-es and these are explained in ISO 4287 and ISO 4288.Those in most common use in the fluid power industryinclude:-

Ra, which is defined as the arithmetical mean deviationof the assessed profile. The inch equivalent parameter isCLA (centre line average). A surface finish of 0.4 µm Ra isexactly equivalent to 16 µin CLA.Rt, which is the total height of the profile. There is nomathematical relationship between Ra and Rt.Rq, which is the root mean square deviation of theassessed profile. The equivalent term in inches is RMS(Root Mean Square). The Rq (RMS) of a surface isapproximatly 10% greater than the Ra (CLA) value.

The surface roughness parameters given above do notgive any indication of the sharpness of the surface. Thepeaks of the profile should be well rounded as sharp sur-face finishes can lead to rapid seal wear.

Dynamic surface finishes

Piston rods are generally hard chrome plated. The hard-ness should be at least 67 Rockwell C. This gives anexcellent tribological surface and provided the rods areproduced by an established supplier within a surface fin-ish range of 0.1 to 0.3 µm Ra (4-12 µin CLA) no majorproblem should ensue, although the optimum surface fin-ish may well depend on the seal material.

Bore surface finishes can be more problematic. The typical methods of obtaining a bore finish are sum-marised in the figure below. Drawn over mandrel (DOM)tubing, as is, can be adequate, or a potential disasterdepending on the actual surface texture achieved andthe application. Increasing use is being made of SpecialSmooth Inside Diameter (SSID) DOM tubing, but in certaincircumstances, mainly when the seal is being driven intothe pressure, it can lead to wear of the seal through flowerosion. Such DOM tubing requires careful specification. The consistency of roller burnished or honed tube is to bepreferred. Skived and roller burnished tubing is verysmooth (less than 0.1µm Ra) (4 µin CLA) and may be too smooth for rubber sealingelements in some applications. True honed tube, pro-duced between (0.1 and 0.4 µm Ra) (4-16 µin CLA) is themost expensive, but has the best finish.

Static surface finishes

The static sealing surface finish must not be ignored inthe control of leakage. Generally, these are fine turnedand should be free from chatter marks.

Pressure, Speed, Temperature RangeFrom many years of application experience with sealing hydraulic equipment, supported by the results from an extensive testprogramme, we know that it is necessary to link the three main operating features of speed, pressure, and temperature to achievea satisfactory seal performance. After carefully considering each product we are able to specify the maximum speed andpressure with a temperature range within which the seal will operate safely. If your operating conditions do not comply with those recommended please send your details to your local Hallite sales office.

DesignThe Hallite Tri-Seal assembly offers the engineer many advantages when considering the design of cast iron, bronze, alloy etc.one-piece pistons in double-acting hydraulic cylinders, not the least being cost effectiveness with longand efficient seal life.

The Tri-Seal consists of two split plastic anti-extrusion rings and a nitrile syntheticrubber sealing member.Under pressure, the seal exerts a wedging action on theanti-extrusion ring, reducing the clearance between the cylinder bore and thepiston, thus minimising the possibility of extrusion of the seal.

Wear rings are also available for this assembly, allowing the designer to benefitfrom the following advantages :

•Eliminate metal to metal contact in the bore •One piece steel piston

•Improved alignment for optimum seal life •Smoother operation

All our activities conform to the highest quality assurance systems. Hallite SealsI n t e rnational quality management systems are a c c redited to ISO 9001 and area p p roved by many of the world’s f o remost OEM’s.

FEATURES• EFFICIENT SEALING• LOW COST• INTERCHANGEABLE• WITH MOST • COMPETITIVE DESIGNS • ROBUST CONSTRUCTION• LOW FRICTION • SIMPLE MACHINING • LONG LIFE • EASY ASSEMBLY

INSTALLATIONFast assembly of the seal is carried out asfollows:The intermediate seal is stretched over thepiston into the recess. The split anti-extrusion rings are positionedwith the concave face against the seal.

MEDIASeals are suitable for mineral basedhydraulic fluid, water soluble and water gly-col fluids. The temperature for the standardrange can be -40°C for intermittent use. Other materials are available which canextend the temperature range down to -60°C or up to +135 °C and to suit esterbased or synthetic non-flammable fluids.

The Hallite 621 rod seal isengineered specifically fordemanding applications whichare subject to high pressurefluctuations, extreme cyclicshock loadings and arduousoperating conditions, such as those experienced in off-highway, earthmoving andconstruction applications.

The seal features three critical component parts:

The main body of the seal, the shell, is manufactured in Hallite's high performancepolyurethane Hythane 181 and features the twinlip design. This equips the seal with flexibility for ease of installation and high performance atboth low and high temperatures.

The integral energiser is moulded in NBR, tailored for use at both low and high temperature. The unique profile forms amechanical lock with the seal shell and extendsthe energiser's capability to ensure optimum lowpressure sealing. This provides positive retentionand maximum responsiveness to the circumferential lips of the shell and helps toeliminate problems caused by negative pressurefluctuations in the housing, due to shock loading.

The polyacetal anti-extrusion ring extends thenormal pressure range of the twin-lip design andenables the seal to withstand heavy side loadsand extreme pressure spikes during operation.

•One seal - Dual applicationMeans that only one type of seal for both double andsingle acting functions, need to be stocked.

Customer payback- Reduced stocks and reduced numberof parts ordered means increased savings inadministration, warehousing, design and build.

•Seal materialManufactured from "Hallite 361", a flexible thermoplasticpolyurethane which is one of the elastomeric materialsthat bridge the gap between flexible rubber and the morerigid engineering plastics. The result is a material which is tough, durable andideally suited to hydraulic cylinder applications.

Customer payback - Long service life giving maximumcosts savings to the customer compared with cheaperseal types.

•Seal designThe Hallite 764 face profile has been designed to createan efficient piston seal for both double and single actingapplications. The low profile contact with the bore of thecylinder at low pressure, minimizes friction and maintainsthe right level of seal squeeze providing an efficientsealing solution.

Customer payback - A combination of flexible materialand efficient design helps reduce friction and enhancesthe life and performance of the seal.
