WHY HOUSEKEEPING? Good housekeeping is an important safety issue. Hazardous workplace can be dangerous when unwanted

materials left around where people can trip over or bump into them.

Good housekeeping has other virtues. When your work area is clean and neat, it's a lot easier to find what you need and do your job efficiently.

It also makes it easier to respond to or get out fast in an emergency.

TYPES OF HAZARDS Tripping and falling hazards are anything on the floor that

doesn't belong there: machines, tools, cords, air hoses, scraps, boxes.

Impact and contact hazards. Open drawers and tools left perched precariously on a table are typical examples. Contact hazards can be prevented by putting things away properly—don't just leave tools or materials on the edge of a surface where they can fall.

Puncture and splinter hazards exist when sharp-edged or pointed tools are left exposed.

Electrical hazards include extension cords, cords left near heat or water, overloaded circuits—anything that could cause fire or shock.

Fire hazards of flammable materials like oil, diesel, petrol and chemicals etc.

Housekeeping Tips Don't let grease or dirt build up; they're not only fire

hazards, but are also bad for the equipments. Keep cords, wires, and ropes untangled. Make sure all containers and materials are labeled. Dust or wipe lights occasionally. Dirty light bulbs don't give

off much light (and waste energy. Report holes, loose boards, and other flooring problems. Throw away trash promptly and properly. Be sure that hazardous trash goes in proper containers,

incompatible trash in its containers, etc. Trash should also be emptied frequently.

Don't pile up scraps of odds and ends at workplace. Send these to scrap yard..
