The design intention for this coastal residential property was to closely integrate the house with the surrounding bushland. The award-winning house, designed in clusters for multi-generational living, is subject to strong winds and harsh coastal conditions which provided some design challenges. These were met by working with the environment, the buildings angles and level changes to create a series of native planting areas that give the appearance of being woven into the structure of the building. These plants include Coastal Banksia (Banksia integrifolia), Kangaroo Paws (Anigozanthos varieties) and strappy foilage plants such as Dialella tasmanica. Sand beds and rock mulch were used to work with the environmental constraints to create a dramatic yet harmonious atmosphere. At the front of the house thin garden beds meld from the lawn area onto the gravel path. Their pattern enhances the views to the ocean and the planting provides screening for privacy.A rectangular swimming pool is placed to link the view of the ocean, again creating a sense of harmony with the surrounding environment. The pool has a spillover that prevents the surface from being whipped up into waves in windy conditions. A low sand garden was positioned in front of the pool, containing coastal groundcovers that border and spill across the area to create a beach effect. This design displays thoughtful decision making in regards to native planting and material choices, and as such is a beautiful example of a low maintenance and drought tolerant landscape. No irrigation systems were installed on the site and the plants grow well, unaided in these conditions.

.Careful positioning of the long rectangular pool gives the appearance of it disappearing into the sea.

.Natural hardscape elements such as sandstone and Crushed Hillview gravel are used in combination with native plants throughout the site, to create an organic, harmonious atmosphere.

.The house and garden lit at night.

.Sand and sandstone are the key hardscape elements of this design, as a tribute to the surrounding coastal landscape.

.Native Anigozanthos flavidus adds colour to the earthy landscape of the sandstone courtyard.

.View of the house from the sandstone courtyard.

.Natural hardscape elements such as sandstone and Crushed Hillview gravel are used in combination with native plants throughout the site, to create an organic, harmonious atmosphere.
