The COMPASS In August, 2016, M1s were introduced to the COMPASS (Collaborative Map for Personal Awareness and Student Success), a tool for guiding and ex-ploring areas that are important to you during your medical school ca-reer.

The COMPASS was developed by medical students, staff, and fac-ulty and focuses on six key destinations: -Career -Meaning & Purpose -Relationships -Environment -Restore & Refuel -Healthy Body &

Healthy Mind

Within these six destina-tions students become aware of areas they want to investigate or strengthen by attending extracurricular program-ming offered through SMPH.

Through regular attend-ance at these programs, medical students under-stand how to successful-ly care for themselves in

order to be excel-lent doctors who can care for others.

The Passport On January 11th, M1s will meet with their House Men-tors to learn how to use the Passport as an interactive tool and guide for reflec-tion and for building their curriculum vitae (CV) .

The Passport as Guid-ing Tool The Passport allows you to have interactive con-versations with fellow students, mentors, and colleagues as you en-counter challenges and make decisions about your career in medicine. It serves as a point of direction and reflection for extracurricular aware-ness, self-care, and sup-port

The Passport Builds Your CV The Passport allows you to upload important doc-uments such as re-search abstracts or pub-lications. Your work can be tagged with a variety of standard tags (or cre-

ate your own) and for-matted into a functional CV.

The Passport Prepares You for Interviews Medical students who utilize the Passport to reflect, discuss, con-verse, and build a body of their work will discover that they have created a path to powerful re-sponses for common questions asked during residency interviews.

The Passport Serves You in Residency and Beyond You will always have access to your OASIS Passport where you can continue connecting with mentors as well as revis-ing and refining your curriculum vitae.

As students look forward to residency, there are three great ways to strategically create and examine your path to one of the most sig-nificant decisions you will make.

Passport Use OASIS to develop your COMPASS Passport and Curriculum Vitae (CV).

House Mentor Connect regularly with your House Mentor for advice, guidance, and referrals to resources.

CiM Website Use the Association of America Medical College’s (AAMC) Careers in Medi-cine (CiM) website.

The CiM web resources are free to U.S. medical stu-dents. Just sign in with your AAMC account.

Regardless of whether you have a specific specialty in mind or multiple career inter-ests, CiM provides a variety of tools for exploring your interests, forming questions

that you can discuss with your advisors and mentors, and developing short– and long-term plans as you make decisions along your career path.

The Wisconsin Medical Alumni Association (WMAA), in conjunction with the Wis-consin Medical Society Foundation (WMSF) will host its 11th annual Operation: Education program on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 from 5:30 – 8pm in the Atrium of the HSLC.

It’s a great opportunity to speak with local practicing physicians about their prima-ry, specialty or research ca-

reer paths. Ask questions of physi-cians – including residents – and learn more about various fields of practice.

You must RSVP for this event by Wednesday, Jan-uary 4th. Sign-up sheets are on the front desk in the Medical Alumni Office on the 4th floor.

Here is our fun and interac-tive plan for the evening:

5:30 p.m. Registration and Buffet Dinner Register, grab a bite to eat, and sit at any table you wish; all tables will have

signs noting an area of prac-tice. This is a good time for informal discussions with physicians, although MDs will be trickling in until 6pm official start time.

6:00 p.m. Opening Com-ments

6:10 p.m. Physician-Student Visits After a brief welcome, stu-dents visit with physicians for approximately 15 minutes and then move to another table. Each student has the opportunity to visit with five different tables.

7:30 p.m. Operation Com-petition End the evening with laughs and fun! Students and physi-cians compete for prizes by playing a few rounds of the Milton Bradley game OPER-ATION®

Current M3s can look forward to vot-ing in the upcoming months for class-mates they believe demonstrate the qualities of integrity, excellence, com-passion, altruism, respect, empathy and service.

The Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) was started in 2002 by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, to instill a culture of respect, dignity, and com-passion for patients and profession-als.

GHHS has grown as a national or-ganization devoted to building a net-work of advocates for compassionate care and now has more than 25,000 members in training and practice.

The GHHS SMPH Chapter, estab-lished in 2006, accepts no more than 15% of the rising M4 class each year and; our chapter members join a growing network of medical students, residents, and faculty who are equally dedicated to practicing and promoting humanistic values.

The current GHHS members will be visiting M3s at the February 17th Core Day to discuss the nomination and induction process. GHHS induc-tees are recognized on ERAS as well as the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE, aka “Dean’s Let-ter”).

Your voting ballot will come through OASIS after 3pm on February 17th. .

If you’d like to learn more about GHHS, contact Jodi Sherman ([email protected]) or attend the next GHHS discussion on Wednesday, January 11th at 6pm (location TBA).

M1s: Writing and Signing Your Honor Code

The Honor Code is an important part of being a medical student at SMPH. Each M1 class writes a part of the Honor Code which is then published, signed by the authors, and displayed prominently on the 2nd floor of the HSLC.

On January 17th M1s will work with their House Mentors to craft and re-flect on their Honor Code and who they will become as physicians. This will be followed on January 25th by an Honor Code signing ceremony for M1s.
