Happy Easter to you all!

Dear Friends

Nothing is so beautiful as spring: “ When weeds, in wheels, shoot long and lovely and lush…” (Gerald Manley Hopkins). This is my very favourite time of the year; spring is the promise of the year to come, the doing away with the darkness and the light which daily increases. Add Easter with spring and we really do have a most wonderful thing. We have journeyed through the necessary time of dark and winter, the time of short days and sleep, and now we along with nature are thrust forward into light and life. The whole basis of our faith as Christians is the Resurrection. The reason we have our beautiful churches, our wonderful worship and liturgy and our ethos of love and care is because we believe in a Risen Christ. Risen from the dead . St Paul says, "If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable." (v.19) Paul said the most pitiful human being on this planet is a person who has put his faith in a Jesus who is dead. Then he says, "But now Christ is risen from the dead. . ." (v.20) We do have a message: Jesus is Alive! We do have a mission: we are to tell everyone we know that Jesus is alive. We do have a ministry: because Jesus is alive we can offer life to the dying and hope to the living. As much as I marvel at the virgin birth of Jesus; as much as I wonder at the sinless life of Jesus; as much as I glory in the cross of Jesus: it is the resurrection of Jesus that makes Christianity unique among all of the world religions.

Love despite my imperfection, Purchased life and peace for me, When He paid with His perfection, Precious blood upon that tree. Satan's failed insurrection, Set instead, this dead man free, For the Saviour’s resurrection, Stole my death in victory. (J. Ellen Fedder)

Bossington Meditations - Holy Mavericks! The spring is upon us and it is time to apprise our loyal congregation of the next series. It is entitled "Holy Mavericks" because all three have risked their lives in the cause of Christianity. Incidentally, all three are still very much alive, although one is almost a centenarian, so he comes first. It is Billy Graham, the great evangelist and friend of American Presidents.

Next comes Brother Yun, who established Christianity in China and was sentenced to death for his pains.

Finally, by special request, Canon Andrew White, better known as the Vicar of Baghdad. His two idols are Pope John Paul II and Billy Graham. Canon White is the only Englishman, but the other two have visited us in the past.

Do join us if you can at 6 p.m. on Easter Sunday 16th April, 21st May, and 18th June and see how maverick is maverick!

Saturday 22 April 10.30 am —12 noon

Rosie is i/c and will be there to welcome you with the famous ‘village hall’ bacon butties, as well as

tea and coffee and cakes!

Donations of non-perishable food (and basic toiletries) to the Houghton Food Bank box will, as always, be welcome.

News!

Thanks to the generosity of villagers supporting our monthly coffee mornings, a donation of £70 will be made to Countess Mountbatten Hospice. Jean Cooper-Moran raised a few extra £££’s from the sale of DVDs at the March event, which was added to the Village Hall Committee’s ‘charity pot’

- many thanks, Jean! The Village Hall is delighted to make a further donation (£220) to ‘The Organators'Southampton

Children's Hospital team towards their Transplant Games in Edinburgh in July, in which James Lewis is participating.

At the Village Hall Committee’s March meeting, a big welcome was given to Kate Lewis who has agreed to join the team that manages and runs your Village Hall! She is keen to get involved with putting on sociable events in the Hall that would be popular with people in the village. So if you’ve got some suggestions, do please let them - or any of the Committee Members - know your ideas and thoughts!

The Committee is sorry to lose Mark Lister from the team; what with a brother or sister

about to arrive for Louis and a house move under way too, Mark’s priorities have had to change. Many thanks to him for all his work and good humour on the team. We’ll miss him!

There was lots of discussion about the next stage in the development of the Hall

Refurbishment project, having taken into account comments from the village survey, priorities for improvements etc., Three architects will be asked to quote for the preparation of plans/elevations to support the pre-application stage for formal planning permission from Test Valley Borough Council. This does not, of course mean that decisions have been made about the specific detail of improvements, but it will provide the Committee with indicative costs of the first major stage to help inform the likely level of funding that will be required for the overall project.

Informal snippets from Houghton Parish Council’s March meeting

Finance

Houghton Parish Council (HPC) funds stand at £6,364.12 as at 28 February 2017, excluding the (solar farm) Community Benefit Fund.

Planning matters

TVBC has notified HPC of the following application:

2 Manor Farm cottages: replacement garage - No comment from HPC

Houghton Farmhouse: Ingrid Burt reported that she and other Parish Cllrs and TV Cllrs Daniel Busk and Peter Boulton held a site meeting with a TVBC planning officer and the TVBC Head of Highways to express their concerns about the access to the development, lighting and the footpath access onto Faithfulls Drove. The meeting particularly concentrated on the issues surrounding parking opposite the access to the site and the protection of the grass verge. TVBC noted their concerns.

Neighbourhood Plan

The Parish Council agreed that the entire parish (ie including North Houghton) should be included as the designated area for production of the Neighbourhood Plan. It will now submit the formal application to TVBC to enable the process to start.

Report from HCC Cllr Andrew Gibson

HCC has appointed a new contractor (Scansa) for Highways Maintenance; to take effect later this year, the company replaces Amey.

A reminder that parishioners can report potholes direct to HCC using its website (‘portal’) at https://roadenquiries.hants.gov.uk/roadproblems/highwaydefect/pothole.aspx

A grant of £500 has been made to Stockbridge Neighbour Care

BT’s high speed broadband (fibre to the cabinet - FTTC) should be available in the next couple of months; this will benefit 01794 phone numbers that are within 1 mile of the recently installed new cabinet near the track down to Sheepbridge.

The review by the Electoral Commission (which should be finalised/agreed later this year) is likely to result in there being 3 rather than 2 Wards (and therefore 3 Councillors) covering this area of Hampshire.

Housing Needs Survey

HPC agreed the draft Housing Survey questionnaire provided by TVBC. This will be sent to all residents/households in the parish within the next few weeks. The results (which will be incorporated into the Neighbourhood Plan) will inform the local and district councils of future ‘affordable’ housing needs.

Not only….but also…

HPC made a £1,000 donation to the Houghton Trail to be used to purchase appropriate tablets/laptops for recording entrants’ course times.

Following the resignation of Claudia Bradby as a HPC Councillor, subject to there being no request for a by-election, residents will be invited to apply tor co-option to the Council; this will be advertised via the village e-mail group and on the village noticeboard.

A member of the public highlighted recent flooding in North Houghton; the PC felt this rainfall had been exceptionally heavy and that the water does disappear. The PC will ask HCC to check out the soak-away at Lodge Hill

Village website: The Parish Council Clerk will be setting up a new website (via the free portal of Hugo-Fox) for Parish Council matters; the PC agreed to investigate how there could be a link within that site to enable other community groups (eg village hall, church, etc.,) to post information on the new website to ensure that there is one, easy-to-maintain, website for the whole village.

Come along and find out what the

Parish Council is doing for the village;

have your say about matters that are

important to you!

We are very pleased to welcome two new members to our Institute and we are all looking forward to a varied and interesting programme of events this year. Our annual meal in February at the Peat Spade Inn was a very happy evening with delicious food and excellent service. We thank all the staff. March’s speaker Gordon Lewis, a freelance journalist who worked for the BBC, gave us a very interesting talk on the politics and parties behind the scenes at the Eurovision Song Contest. The Contest, first televised in 1956, was designed to create a united Europe. However, as we heard, the voting has been on political, social and religious affiliations, irrespective of the worth of the singers or songs. I am sure when this year’s competition happens we will be looking at the voting numbers in a different light. The next meeting will be on Monday 24 April at 7.30 pm when we will have a talk on the Flora and Fauna of Broughton Down. Visitors are most welcome. If you would like more information, do please use the contact numbers in this magazine’s Village Directory Sue Marshall

The cat thought for a minute and then said, 'All my life I lived on a farm and slept on hard wooden floors. I would like a real fluffy pillow to sleep on.' God said, 'Say no more.' Instantly the cat had a huge fluffy pillow A few days later, six mice were killed in an accident and they all went to Heaven together. God met the mice at the gates with the same offer that He made to the cat. The mice said, 'Well, we have had to run all of our lives: from cats, dogs, and even people with brooms! If we could just have some little roller skates, we would not have to run again.' God answered, 'It is done.' All the mice had beautiful little roller skates. About a week later, God decided to check on the cat. He found her sound asleep on her fluffy pillow. God gently awakened the cat and asked, 'Is everything okay? How have you been doing? Are you happy?' The cat replied, 'Oh, it is WONDERFUL I have never been so happy in my life. The pillow is so fluffy, and those little Meals on Wheels you have been sending over are delicious!'

A cat died and went to Heaven. God met her at the gates and said, 'You have been a good cat all these years. Anything you want is yours for the asking.'

Strange things seen (by Vern Middleton)

...in the skies above Houghton!

I’ve had a lifelong ambition to become an astronaut. There…I said it! Having been reliably

informed that I was unlikely to be selected to follow in Tim Peake’s footsteps and allowed to

travel into space I decided to do the next best thing and buy a telescope. The clear skies

above Houghton suggested that we live in an ideal place for me to setup the “Houghton

Observatory”. So I dreamed of taking fantastic astronomical photos to rival those of the

Hubble space telescope. After a lengthy search for some kit, eBay provided me with the

perfect setup: “one careful owner but the telescope needs some looking into”….. etc., etc!

I spent some time trying to figure out what

goes where and trying to learn my

Galaxies from my Nebulas and on the next

clear night I set up in the field out the back.

After my first look at the Moon I was

hooked. As my hands slowly froze on to

the telescope I pondered on the amazing

details that were revealed. Whilst I couldn’t

quite see Neil Armstrong’s footprints I did

see some stunning looking craters and

mountain ranges just asking to be

explored. Definitely worth a trip on a Moon

Mountain Bike, I captured some photos by

holding my mobile phone to the telescope

eyepiece with a reasonable amount of

success.

9

Orion Nebula

Jupiter

With new found confidence, a few days

later I turned my telescope to the awesome

sounding “Orion Nebula” - a vast cosmic

dust cloud swirling in the sword hanging

from Orion’s belt. This appears like a green

cloud surrounding a group of bright stars.

It’s a star nursery where brand new

twinkling stars are still being born. It's

amazing to think that light left these stars

1700 year ago when the Vikings were still

causing chaos in Britain. It spent all those

years of recent history journeying across

the cosmos before crashing into my

telescope on a very cold night in Houghton!

What a journey and at least it ended up in a

great place! This time I managed to capture

some photos using an old PC webcam

attached to the telescope eyepiece and I

used some computer magic to create a

reasonable photo of what I observed.

Telescopes and computers! Geek heaven!!

More recently Jupiter has become visible at a reasonable hour enabling me to take a quick peek

without staying up past bedtime. This massive planet rises in east over the river at about 9:30pm

at this time of the year. By eye it looks like a bright star but through a telescope it looks like a

beautifully mysterious striped world orbited by a group of moons. Again I used my webcam and

computer trickery to produce some photos.

So what’s next? Well I have just upgraded my telescope so

that it now automatically follows the stars

as they appear to move across the

heavens. This should allow me to spend

more time observing and less time fiddling

about and wondering where the stars have

gone! Also, a warm coat and bobble hat

seem a useful investment. There is a whole universe of fantastic

things to look at up there and I am really

looking forward to exploring.

If anyone fancies a look,

please let me know!

Albie, like the rest of us, is watching the growth of development on Kent’s Orchard with

interest. He remembers it full of apple trees, which he and the other lads of the village would

“scrump”. He also enjoyed apples from the orchard, opposite the Old Rectory in Church Lane.

He would be rewarded for the work completed there, by the freedom to pick as many apples

as he wished.

Albie remembers Romany families camped out near Sheepwash Bridge. He speaks of a row

of brown tents. Some of these families were housed when the first houses were built in

Stevens Drove. The top photograph show the village pageant held to commemorate the Silver

Jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary. Albie says he knew everyone in the village by name

at this time and could name all those in the photographs. However, his memory has faded

with time. The Old Post Office is shown and you can see it still has a thatched roof.

Like the fabled Himalayan yeti, they belong to a rare breed of impeccable pedigree that relishes the privacy of its harsh, but beautiful, home environment. Sightings of the Flying Grannies (FGs) of Klosters tend to take place only at dawn or dusk and it’s a very courageous man who dares to follow them into

the snowy wastes of the Parsenn mountain range. However, if you catch the first cable-car of the morning, you may come across a group of eclectically - some would say eccentrically - clad ladies, mostly on the wrong side of 70. They’ll be wearing an assortment of ski clothing that’s been tested to the extreme. But entirely out of keeping with age and dress, they’ll be clutching this season’s widest and sexiest powder skis, complete with touring bindings. Fast-forward to the end of the skiing day, when you’re relaxing over a well-earned après-ski drink at the Schwendi restaurant on the home run back to the resort. In the half light of the late afternoon, when the last lift has long closed, tired eyes can play tricks. But you may just glimpse that same group of women emerging confidently from the darkness of the Chalbersass Woods, brushing leaves and twigs from their hair. For the FGs, who don’t see age as a barrier to ski challenge, it’s been just another day. The group was given its name when the members went heli-skiing from peak to peak around Klosters in the 1990s. But they soon gave the chopper the chop on the grounds that not only was it outrageously expensive, but they also felt it was dishonest. Sadly, but inevitably, the number of original FGs has diminished during the past 20 years. A few newbies have come and gone, but it’s generally agreed that the younger generation is lacking in staying power. Of the original dozen, some have moved on to the celestial snowfields, some have retired from skiing and others now managed only occasional outings because ‘bits keep falling off’. A typical day out in Klosters for the FGs means skiing from the top of the Weissfluhgipfel down the Gotschna’s north-facing slopes to Schwendi and picking their way down to Serneus for lunch. The south-facing Madrisa ski area is deemed to be ‘too new, with too many drag-lifts’ and is therefore ignored. Lunch can be just as challenging as the skiing, as not one of the ladies speaks a word of the local lings.

‘Some days we eat on the hoof’, say Joanna, ‘bringing a roll and chocolate - and our skins, of course.

We’re not shrinking violets and we go out whatever the weather. We start at 8.30 am and keep going

until 5 pm without any coffee breaks.’

OMG!

All about April………! Though April's derivation is not certain, a common theory is that the name is rooted in the Latin ‘Aprilis’ which is

derived from the Latin ‘aperire’ meaning “to open” , perhaps a reference to the opening or blossoming of flowers and trees, a common occurrence throughout the month of April.

April Fool’s Day…? The most popular theory about the origin of April Fool's Day involves the French calendar reform of the sixteenth century. Because…..in 1564 France reformed its calendar, moving the start of the year from the end of March to January 1 (Perhaps that is why the financial year starts on 1April?) Those who failed to keep up with the change, who stubbornly clung to the old calendar system and continued to celebrate the New Year during the week that fell between March 25th and April 1st, had jokes played on them. Pranksters would surreptitiously stick paper fish to their backs. The victims of this prank were thus called Poisson d'Avril (April Fish) which to this day remains the French term for April Fool; and so the tradition was born.

Daisies or Sweet Peas are the flowers for April …………………………………….

sources of history and memories to create a highly touching piece. An ageing Stockbridge resident, Ann Street, is taking part in a

reminiscence project being researched by the local university. Her recollections serve to chart life events for her family and for the wider community of Stockbridge. Through action that is set at the turn of the 20th century and after the Great War, the play reveals the struggles of women as they seek to become doctors against rigid opposition from male members of the profession. In addition, the play shows dramatically how some men had to strive to cope with the effects of the war.

Houghton Lodge Gardens are excited to announce that “Honesty”, artisans of fine baking and

cooking, will run the tearoom from 1 April 2017.

01635 268989 www.honestygroup.co.uk

Honesty offer seasonal, simple, well cooked

food, making use whenever possible of local, small producers. They hope to use some of the fresh, ripe produce from Houghton Lodge Gardens in their pies, tarts and soups, on offer through the season.

This will be the fourth tearoom for Honesty. Their experience comes from the success of three other Hampshire/Berkshire tearooms, a hotel, restaurant and cookery school. Food is made using no additives, chemical flavour enhancers or preservatives; only rainforest alliance coffee beans and ethically produced teas are served. Customers to Honesty at Houghton Lodge Gardens, can look forward to simple, classically English menus. You’ll be able to enjoy stunningly good treats of breakfast pastries, bacon rolls, home-baked cakes, biscuits, tarts, panini and sandwiches. There will be imaginative salads, filled pies, quiches, soup and cream teas. There will be a hot dish each day that will change as the season progresses.

The tempting tearoom will also sell Honesty’s freshly baked artisan breads, jams and pickles to

take home. When the weather is warm, you can eat outside, surrounded by scents from the flowers and surrounding kitchen garden. For more shelter, eat in the main tearoom or Orangery, with views over the walled garden. The House is open to Groups by appointment only and Honesty can provide a delicious pre-ordered lunch or afternoon tea. For those purchasing day fishing permits, the tearoom also offers hearty lunchboxes or hampers. Whether you are looking to indulge in a morning coffee, breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea - great food surrounded by gorgeous flowers makes for a winning combination. Visitors to just the tearoom, and our art exhibition, are welcome without the need to purchase tickets for the garden.

Houghton Lodge Gardens and Tearoom are open 10 am to 5 pm

1 April - 1 October when the season ends with an

Apple Day in the Walled Garden.

Neighbour Care

Getting to a doctor’s/hospital/ dental/optician or other medical appointment need not be a problem. Call 0845 094 3713 A friendly voice will come to your aid and organise transport for you to and from your appointment,

courtesy of one of the Volunteer Drivers There is no charge if you are over 60 or have a Bus Pass.

If you don't have a Bus Pass but you qualify for one, ring TVBC (01264 368000) to order one.

Neighbour Care volunteers can also help with non-medical appointments, including visiting someone in hospital, help with day-to-day errands such as collecting prescriptions, small shopping commissions, dog walking, so it’s always worth asking if you need help with anything.

Do make a note of the number….it could be very useful one day!

How to reduce your heating oil costs! Join the Oil Syndicate - it’s free! Order via Houghton Oil Syndicate to reduce your oil bill: the more households in the Syndicate (currently 65), the greater savings achieved; we have the power to negotiate savings of up to 10p/litre. Contact Bob Gosse [email protected] or call 01794 388617

Orders are made almost every month and Bob sources the best deal from local oil companies and orders your oil requirements, including, where required, the ‘additive’ needed for some cookers, eg Aga, Raeburn. You pay the oil company direct, usually after delivery, on invoice.

If you would like to add/amend information to this list, please contact the Editors at

[email protected] If you are a neighbour of a newcomer it maybe worthwhile lending this magazine to highlight

some of the things available in our village.

Houghton News: our monthly parish magazine provides information on village events, church services and other local area news plus a wide range of local advertisers. it costs £8.50 for the ten editions a year (85p ea). If you are new to the village (or know someone who is) and would like to have the magazine delivered to your door, please let Maureen Stephens know — she’s Distribution Manager! (see Directory p32) Profits go to All Saints Church PCC.

Oil Syndicate: members of this village syndicate, run by Bob Gosse, use their bulk purchasing power to get the lowest price per litre. Details on p28 of this magazine.

Houghton Parish Council: public meetings are held every other month, usually on the 1st Monday of alternate months, in the Village Hall. Councillors are listed in the Village Directory; informal notes of meetings and future meeting dates are usually included in this magazine. Formal Minutes are circulated via the Village e-mail group and posted on the village noticeboard.

All Saints Church, Houghton: Monthly services in the Benefice and other church news is published in Houghton News. See Village Directory for contacts for further information.

Village Coffee Mornings: run by the Village Hall Committee usually on the 3rd Saturday of the month from 10.30 to 12 noon, in the Village Hall . A relaxed and friendly way to meet up and catch up over a coffee and cake or bacon buttie! Details sent out via village email group and in Houghton News each month.

Village e-mail group: There are 150 subscribers so far to this e-group which helps us all keep up-to-date with what’s on in the village – apart from reading Houghton News, of course! You can hear about things going on in the village more frequently than once a month! Your email is not revealed, unless you post a message yourself. It’s so easy to join….just email [email protected] and ask to join! If you don’t have email, you could ask a friend in the village who does to tell you about messages sent.

Village Directory: a list of useful names, phone numbers, email, for organisations relevant to Houghton; published each month on the last but one page of Houghton News.

Village Hall: Lots of village events happen here! For information about current regular events and who to contact if you’d like to hire the Hall, please see p13. The Village Hall Committee (p29) is responsible for the management and day-to-day running of the Hall.

WI: meets monthly in the Village Hall; see contacts in Village Directory for more information.

Neighbour Care: Houghton is part of the Stockbridge Good Neighbours scheme, offering free transport to doctor/hospital and other important appointments to those unable to drive. See p28 of this magazine for details.

HAHA - Houghton Allotment Holders Association: there are 10 allotments in the village. Please contact Philip Page (HAHA Chair); or Lucy Gosse (Secretary) for more Information - [email protected]

Postal Deliveries: Steve is our regular Postie and his ‘relief’ is Nick. There are 4 post boxes: almost opposite Bossington Estate offices, by Village Hall, outside Houghton Lodge and on the road into Stockbridge, just beyond Dairy Barn.
