DEAR GUESTS! I am delighted to be your new host at the
Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains in St. Moritz. It is an hon-
our for me to manage this hotel in the anniversary winter
2014/15 and to start out in my new position in this special
winter season.
I lived and worked in the Engadine and in St. Moritz in the
past and then in the last ten years I was the director of the Ho-
tel Principe Leopoldo in Ticino. When I was a boy, I wanted
to be a professional football player but later became fascinated
by the hotel trade, a feeling that has never left me. I do of
course look forward to also doing some sport in the Engadine:
windsurfing, biking and skiing. I love the natural environment
and climate here. And my family – my wife and our four chil-
dren – also look forward to this new adventure.
It will be nice to meet you in person! I set great store in our
hotel regularly exceeding your expectations – something we
will do our utmost to achieve.
Ich freue mich auf Sie!I look forward to seeing you.

150 years of winter tourism
Weltcuprennen, Bob-Weltmeisterschaften, das Polo on Ice-
Turnier, das Skjöring oder der Engadin Ski Marathon unzähli-
ge Gäste, Fans und Liebhaber an.
Everything began 150 years ago with a bet and the English.
The hotelier Johannes Badrutt invited them to experience
the winter in the Engadine because it was full of sunshine
and much milder. If they did not like it, he would reimburse
their travel costs. The English, who knew only cold and damp
winters, came to the Engadine and did not return until after
Easter, tanned, rested and happy. They had discovered winter
holidays.
Winter, sun, snow, an incomparable mountain landscape and
the pure, dry air that later, together with the jet set of the
1950s, gave rise to the term «champagne climate»: that is all
part of the Engadine. All that is St. Moritz.
Guests from all over the world have always enjoyed the winter
in the Engadine. The only two Olympic Games to be held in
Switzerland were held in St. Moritz, and ski World Cup races,
bob championships, the Polo On Ice tournament, the Skijor-
ing or the Engadine Ski Marathon still attract countless guests,
fans and enthusiasts today.

THE ORIGINAL IN
WINTER TOURISM
SINCE 1864
The first spa and tourism association in Switzerland was estab-
lished in St. Moritz exactly 150 years ago, heralding the start
of winter tourism and winter sports in the Alps. St. Moritz has
been the venue for many pioneering sporting achievements:
the first game of curling on continental Europe, the first Euro-
pean skating championships, the first bob and the first bob rac-
es, the first horse races on snow, the only two Olympic Games
in Switzerland and the first ski school in Switzerland – to name
just the most important. And of course, all that innovation has
a name: St. Moritz was the first registered and protected loca-
tion name with a logo, as early as 1930!
150 Jahre Wintertourismus/150 years of winter tourism
14
150 Jahre Wintertourismus
150 Jahre Hotelgeschichte. Das Hotel des Bains
in St. Moritz Bad stand ganz am Anfang.
Es war einmal...
15
150 years of winter tourism
The «Hotel des Bains» was already opened in St. Moritz Bad
in the summer of 1864; its «successor» today is the Kemp-
inski Grand Hotel des Bains. The first hotel at this location,
however, only had two storeys, and the two towers were miss-
ing for some years. The first restructuring was conducted in
1887. The distinctive towers have existed since 1905 – inci-
dentally, they were first used as a laundry and accommodation
for chambermaids. The hotel was closed from 1914 until 1958
and was only reopened in the years 1928 and 1948 for a short
time for the Olympic Games. The first major conversions and
renovations were completed in 1958, leading to the reopening
of the hotel with flat roofs, more modern furniture and a new
heating system. In 2002, Kempinski opened it after 14 months
of renovation and modernisation as the Kempinski Grand Ho-
tel des Bains. Using old engravings and photos, the venerable
building was carefully and responsibly renovated.
...a hotel: 150 years of winter tourism are also
150 years of hotel history. The Hotel des Bains in
St. Moritz Bad was there at the very beginning.
Once upon a time...
16
150 Jahre Wintertourismus
Let’s talk!
Der Journalist Michael Lütscher hat das Buch
«Schnee, Sonne und Stars» über 150 Jahre
Winter tourismus in der Schweiz geschrieben.
Er liebt den Winter über alles.
The journalist Michael Lütscher wrote the book
«Snow, Sun and Stars» about 150 years of winter
tourism in Switzerland. He loves the winter above
everything else.
Treiber. Sie waren begeistert vom Klima.
Was mögen Sie selber am Winter?
Ich liebe den Winter einfach. Schon immer! Ich fahre Ski und
Snowboard.
Michael Lütscher, how did you come to
write this book?
Four years ago, I wrote a book about the history
of Zurich Football Club. When doing research
in sport archives, I noticed the beautiful old
photos of winter sports in the 1920s and 1930s.
But I could not find a book that told the history
of winter sport and winter tourism. That was the
start. Later, I had contact with St. Moritz which
wanted to celebrate 150 years of winter tourism.
A happy coincidence!
Were there also happy coincidences with re-
gard to the content?
Yes, pictures about glacier skiing in the 1970s and archives that
had pictures of the end of the 19th century. Pictures that I spe-
cifically travelled to London to view. We were greeted by open
doors virtually everywhere. Many offered assistance, opened
their archives and were pleased to receive such a request.
What surprised you about winter tourism in the Engadine?
It is interesting that it actually began as health tourism. The first
guests came because of the good air to try and cure their tuber-
culosis, which at the time was a widespread disease. English-
men and Germans were sent to spend time in the dry winter air
and in the sun. They soon recovered dramatically. The question
then arose: How do we pass the time in the mountains? This led
to the development of winter sports. The English, with their
flair for games and betting, were the driving force for this. They
loved the climate.
What do you yourself like about winter?
I simply love the winter. Always have done! I go skiing and
snowboarding. The winter in the mountains is simply beautiful.

exist for hundreds of years although they consist solely of

Mein Engadin/My Engadine
Palazzo Reale in Mailand.

grew up in Maloja and still have just as close ties with the Enga-
dine as with his pictures and his work. This is why I established
Segantini Unlimited in 2007 to preserve and impart his legacy.
And I have curated major Segantini exhibitions, in Switzerland
and abroad, in 2011 in the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen and
in 2014/15 in the Palazzo Reale in Milan. With the «Verein
Segantini Maloja» we campaign for local awareness of the art of
Segantini and contemporary artists. And in the Atelier Segan-
tini in Maloja, I also regularly meet up with interested parties
in person. Otherwise, I work as the cultural head of Swiss tel-
evision and radio RS1 in Lugano and am actively engaged in
film and music production. But the Engadine is and remains the
place where I have fixed roots and that regularly inspires me to
embark on new adventures.»

Besser trainieren im Engadin
Training better in the Engadine
Höhentraining! Wer Ausdauersport betreibt, kommt um den
Begriff nicht herum. Viktor Röthlin ist der beste Schweizer
Läufer der Gegenwart. Er war Europameister und hat jah-
relang selber im Engadin trainiert. Heute bringt er Freizeit-
sportler in Bewegung. Viktor Röthlin empfiehlt: «Wenn man
intensiver bewegen. Und erst am Schluss einer Trainingswo-
che darf man an die Grenzen gehen. Man sollte genug und be-
wusst trinken. Und das allerwichtigste ist: Das Geniessen nicht
vergessen! Lassen Sie es sich gut gehen. Sie sind ja schliesslich
im Urlaub. Das ist Ihre Zeit!»
Altitude training! Endurance sportsmen and women cannot
avoid it. Viktor Röthlin is the best Swiss runner in present-day
Switzerland. He was European champion and himself trained
in the Engadine for many years. Today, he gets leisure sports-
men and women exercising. His recommendation: «When you
reach altitude, you have to give the body time. In the first two
or three days, it has to adapt to the thinner, drier air. The body
is then rather reduced, and you should only exercise in the
range that you can tolerate. The rule of thumb is: You should
still be able to tell stories whilst you are doing sport. After
three days, you should be able to do more intensive exercise.
And it is not until the end of a week’s training that you should
go to the limits. You should drink sufficient quantities of liq-
uids, and do so consciously. And the most important thing is:
do not forget the fun aspect! Enjoy yourself. After all, you are
on holiday! This is your time!»

An diesem Tag
The Chalandamarz comes from a time when Grisons did not
even exist and the province of Rhaetia was still part of the Ro-
man Empire. At the time, the 1st of March, the Chalandamarz,
marked the first day of the year. On this day, the evil spirits had
to be driven out. And that is still the case to date: With this tra-
ditional custom, whips are cracked, bells rung and these very
spirits are driven out with singing. The Chalandamarz custom
is upheld throughout the Engadine. On 1 March, children and
young people are out and about everywhere with their bells,
including of course in St. Moritz.
wunderbaren Namen: Chalandamarz.
Every year on 1 March, Romansch-speaking
young people in the Engadine celebrate their own
festival with the wonderful name «Chalandamarz».

THIS WINTER, GALERIE ANDREA CARATSCH WILL BE SHOWING THREE EXHIBITIONS AT ITS
ST.MORITZ GALLERY LOCATED ON VIA SERLAS 12.
ROLF SACHS: CAMERA IN MOTION
Rolf Sachs was born in 1955 to German-French parents in
Lausanne and today mainly lives in London. Since his child-
hood, he has had a close connection to the Engadine Valley
and St.Moritz.
Already creative in his youth, since the late 1980s Sachs has
established himself as a designer and artist. His works are in-
spired by everyday objects and materials that he reinterprets
in unconventional ways. From the beginning, Sachs has dem-
onstrated a restrained aesthetic and avoided decoration in
favor of a more conceptual language that evokes emotional
and sensory reactions. The integration of the human factor as
well as humorous elements are typical characteristics that run
through his multidisciplinary work.
In cooperation with Galerie von Bartha, Galerie Andrea Carat-
sch will be showing a selection of photos from the series Cam-
era in Motion: from Chur to Tirano, which Sachs began in late
2012. In this body of works, Sachs took photographs from a
moving train. Depending on the speed of the train, the subject
and its distance from the camera, the resulting photographs
show varying degrees of blurriness that play and compete with
moments of surprising clarity. The exhilarating landscapes in
these works unavoidably call to mind the German Romantics
and the paintings of Turner. Among more recent examples, a
similar postmodern involvement with landscapes, abstraction
and photography, though carried out in the medium of paint-
ing, can be found in the overpainted photographic landscapes
of Gerhard Richter. The drama and pathos of the large-format
landscape pictures contrast with the silent and more contem-
plative pictures of a railroad worker or a train signal, in which
we recognize Sachs’s interest in the everyday and the prosaic.
Beyond these visual references, Camera in Motion: from Chur
to Tirano is meant to be understood as a reflection on the no-
tions of time and impermanence. It presents symbols of the
fast pace of our time, captured moments from all of our life
journeys which continually slip out of our consciousness and
memory.
The gallery is open from Monday to Saturday from 2 to 7 p.m.

OLIVIER MOSSET: THE KITCHEN PAINTINGS THE ART OF CODOGNATO
Attilio Codognato is a fifth-generation jeweler as well as an art
collector, author and curator. An intellectual with a fondness
for Proust and movies, he wears the ribbon of a Chevalier des
Arts et des Lettres on his lapel. For nearly 150 years the Co-
dognato jewelers have been situated at the same spot in Venice,
near the Piazza San Marco, where they attract an illustrious
international clientele fascinated by the inventiveness and sub-
jects of their designs. At home, Attilio Codognato lives in his
Venetian palazzo amid his eclectic collection, in which works
by Warhol, Duchamp, de Chirico, Rauschenberg, Kosuth and
Naumann are juxtaposed with classical antiquities and Italian
and Russian period furniture.
Galerie Andrea Caratsch will show a selection of works from
Codognato’s jewelry collection, all of which were designed by
his family and himself. This display will be combined with art-
works selected by the jeweler in the gallery’s holdings which
reflect Codognato’s taste for the unusual and unconventional.
Olivier Mosset was born in 1944 in Bern, Switzerland. He lives
and works in Tucson, Arizona.
The artist has spent considerable time in Paris and New York.
In the 1960s, he was a member of BMPT, a group of concep-
tually driven painters, along with Daniel Buren, Michel Par-
mentier and Niele Toroni. The group sought to democratize
art through radical procedures of deskilling, implying that
the art object was more important than its authorship. In the
1970s, Mosset undertook a series of monochrome paintings
on regular or shaped canvases, mostly of monumental format,
that more or less implicitly comment on circuits of production
and exchange. For four decades, he has been researching the
future of painting through geometric abstraction, exploring
other formats and materials of abstract painting. His work has
since continued to be consistent with issues of neutrality, ap-
propriation and repetition. The artist voluntarily abandons all
anecdotal, significant or interpretative content, and invites the
contemplation of the meditative calm of monochromes.
The present show was originally created for the artist space
The Kitchen in New York in autumn 2013. It consists of three
groups of four monochrome paintings in the shape of letters,
all of which reference the artist Marcel Duchamp: TUM’,
MUTT and TUTU. Mosset says about the present group of
works: «There is a Frank Stella type of thing going on, and
a subtle game with Duchamp in the titling.» In TUTU he
refers to Duchamp’s drawing of a ballerina, but at the same
time the work is an homage to his own interest in ballet and
his friendship with a prima ballerina. However, he sees these
things as «excuses to make a painting, but then you lose the
subjective narrative and it becomes the onlookers.»
