PRESIDENT’S RAMBLE The recent Club Run to the Beehive Hotel in
Coolac was very well attended by Cootamundra
and Harden members, with 15 people and nine cars:
Ken and Betsy Harrison (Plymouth), Graeme and
Robyn Snape (Alfa Giulia Sprint), Ken and Daina
Trethewey (XK120 Jag), Alan and Jill Thompson
(Studebaker Lark Convertible), Me (Toyota
Cressida), John and Joan Collins (VW Beetle), Tim
O’Keeffe (Hillman Imp GT), Peter McCarthy
(Ford Telstar) and Doug Wright (Ford Fairlane)
with passenger Len Dopson.
The day started cool and overcast (very cool at the
Collins and McMinn residences as we had a
scheduled power outage), but during the pleasant
run to Coolac (ably led by the Plymouth) the Sun
started to appear, and by the time we arrived it was
a nice sunny day. We could (almost) have eaten
‘al fresco’.
The menu offered a surprising number of choices
for a small place, with many opting for various
types of burger or fish and chips. I know at least
Tim and I chose one of the (smaller) steak options
and certainly enjoyed them.
After plenty of chatter, we all made our various
ways home in the brilliant sunshine. Thanks, Betsy,
for an ideal weekday run.
Don’t forget the following events will soon be
upon us, and volunteer/join-in if you can:
14th
August - Run to Lyndhurst;
18th
August - Deb Ball;
25th
August - Wattle Time Parade.
TAFE Workshop will be back Wednesday 6 p.m.
25 July by the time you read this, so thanks again
to Alan Thompson and his various assistants for
making this great facility available to us.
As always, safe and happy motoring to all.

Heard on ABC radio, Australia all Over – Sunday 1 July --
today, 40 V & Vs from the Model T Ford clubs and Model A
Ford clubs – will converge on Tibooburra. They are on a
camping trip. They will drive to Cameron Corner on
S.A./QLD/NSW border on Tuesday.
Colin and Bobbie Macaulay of Junee, ( who joined our club
in 2004), had their T there – the one which advertises Junee
Licorice Factory.
Last year they resigned from our club to concentrate on
driving their T Fords on expeditions in the outback.
Sunday 12 August -- C.M.C. Shannons Sydney Classic --
at Motor Sports Park
This is a day for all the motor clubs affiliated in the Council
of Motor Clubs to display in an allocated site at Eastern
Creek Raceway.
I used to state in this newsletter that the biggest antique
vehicle event in Australia is Adelaide’s annual BAY TO
BIRDWOOD. (Usually about 1700 vehicles parade 60 kms
to Birdwood Museum.) Adelaide hosts the BAY TO
BIRDWOOD each year in the last weekend in September.
The BAY TO BIRDWOOD grew to become Australia’s
biggest Parade for Heritage Vehicles. Many clubs throughout
Australia organise tours to Adelaide to participate in The
BAY TO BIRDWOOD.
Now, reading through other clubs newsletters, I find that the
annual Shannons Sydney Classic in August gets more than
1700 entrants, (--Including double-decker buses). So, it’s the
biggest Display. The BAY TO BIRDWOOD is the biggest
Parade.
Talking about double-decker buses, there are some double-
decker buses housed in Junee Railway Roundhouse Museum.
They belong to “The Omnibus Preservation Society
Wagga”.
For train spotters --
Vintage Train Excursion
Steam locomotive BEYER-GARRATT 6029, hauling
passenger carriages, is planned to pass through Harden and
Cootamundra – Thursday 30 August. About 1 p.m. through
Cootamundra.
On the return trip to Sydney -- The steam train is planned to
pass through Cootamundra and Harden - Monday 3 Sept.
About 10 a.m. through Cootamundra.
Therefore . . . on the day AFTER our SWAP
MEET -- Monday 3 September - 9.30 a.m.
John Collins will motor in his Volkswagen to
the Lookout which is below the Bethungra
Railway Spiral, and – park and watch through
the windscreen - to see the train circle around the
spiral. You don’t even have to get out of your car.
(The Lookout Parking Area is on the Olympic
Hwy downhill run near Bethungra.) Be there!
This Vintage Train Excursion - (30 August to 3 Sept.) is a
rare, most extraordinary holiday trip. Departs Sydney, bound
for Melbourne. At the Seymour Railway Heritage Centre,
Victorian steam locomotives take over for more planned trips.
A ticket on this holiday trip from Sydney costs $2200.

Scrounged from the newsletter of the Post Vintage Car Club
of Tasmania – a story about a PLYMOUTH:
The atom bomb developed during the 2nd
World War was
tested in a desert in New Mexico. The nuclear cone of the
bomb was transported to the site - not on a special
transporter – but, on the back seat of a regular family
sedan – a PLYMOUTH to be precise.
Yes, you read correctly – on the back seat. Why was the
Plymouth chosen? This was simply an army staff car. The
Plymouth was probably the nearest car to hand.
A replica of this historic vehicle is in the U.S. National
Museum of Nuclear Science and History, on display.

A 1960 NEWSPAPER REPORT - - - READ ALL ABOUT -- our Ken Harrison . . . . . ( in 1960!)
The Illawarra Vintage Car Club held a Sports Day
at the Bargo Airstrip and provided plenty of
interesting racing and lots of fun for members.
Events included acceleration tests and races of
three, six and – finally - forty laps. But dust was
the big hazard.
Star performer of the day was I.V.C.C. President,
Ken Harrison, who in his Harrison-built “Monza-
Vauxhall” Special won all but one of the events.
Early in the day he was handicapped by gearbox
trouble and he competed using second gear only.
Runner-up was Club Captain, Laurie Carter, whose
ex-Harrison Ford A Special ran close behind the
“Monza-Vauxhall” in most events.
Ron Thorp filled third place, thanks to the efforts
of his Ford V8 and Triumph Gloria sedans.
The Fiat-Norton Special of the Cavanagh twins ran
well until gearbox trouble forced its retirement.
New member Brian Spence in his 1936 BUICK
showed great promise with the engine firing on all
eight cylinders.
Neil Pember arrived in a speedily converted Ford
Custom ute, which proved a delightful match for
the Buick 8, but failed to keep up with Ron Thorp’s
Ford V8.
Club secretary Ian Fenton introduced his Sunbeam-
Talbot coupe, and was the only competitor who
experienced a trouble-free day. The Sunbeam was
always ahead of Ron Thorp’s Triumph.
Only two cars completed the 40 lap grand prix,
which was the dustiest on record. Ken Harrison’s
Monza Vauxhall finished half a lap ahead of Ron
Thorp’s Ford V8 which was interchanged
periodically with the Triumph Gloria.
Laurie Carter’s Ford A Special withdrew after 26
laps in a spectacular cloud of smoke and steam.
Other competitors dropped out or were lost in an
immense cloud of dust which enveloped the whole
circuit.
It was apparent a lot of work would have to be
done on the vehicles before the next Sports Day.
It is rumoured the next major event will be a night
trial.
C.A.M.C. member, Brian Ridge, submits the following excerpts
from a manuscript written by his father’s ex-army mate.
They were P.O.W.s in Singapore and ended up on the Burma
Railway. A MEMOIR - Between Two World Wars.
The writer of these memoirs, Ken Darwin 8 Div. A.I.F. reveals he
was a petrol head, so is of interest to us.
( He lost his motorbike licence in 1997 because of failing eyesight.)
By the May school holidays of 1935 I was sick of the bus! I was
over 14 years of age, and a legal licence to ride a motorcycle was
available for 5/-. My family had already bought a Morris and an
Austin 12 tourer from Gotte Bros. of Adelaide and now Gotte Bros
had two motorbikes for sale. One was a 1926 B.S.A. @ 12 pounds
10 shillings and the other a 1928 DOUGLAS 350 flat twin for
5 pounds. I settled for the Douglas.
I spent the next 3 months pulling it to pieces, painted it light and
dark blue as I was an ardent Sturt barracker. With advice from Dad
I ground the valves, fitted rings, and got the monster ready to ride.
Learning was performed in bottom gear because 2nd gear in loose
gravel at a corner resulted in me having to repair damage and
scratches.
Mum gave me bus fares of 3d each way to High School. But if I
rode the push-bike - I had money for the motorbike. Petrol cost 1/5
a gallon Standard, and 1/8 for Super, so I used Standard. Petrol
brands were – Shell, Plume (now Mobil), Golden Fleece, Texaco
(now Caltex) and COR, (now BP). Petrol was sold at hand-operated
pumps in multiples of half-gallon.
Our bikes lacked speedos. To check your speed, you selected 2
mileposts, passing the first at full speed and reading the time it took
to reach the next one. The DOUG would cover a mile a minute, 60
m.p.h. And 60 miles to a gallon.
I was an enterprising and energetic teenager. To earn money for
petrol I took on growing tomatoes among Dad’s almond trees,
picked peas for Mr Dodd @ 10d for a 4 gallon bucket, planted
strawberries, sold them @ 1/- a punnet by the road on Sunday
mornings. In school holidays I managed to get paid work every day
– all to run THE DOUGLAS. Which brought me new
acquaintances, (with better bikes), to go riding with :
George Bryant worked for Richards Motor Body Works, Keswick –
had a brand new EXCELSIOR with a 148 cc 2-stroke Villiers engine.
It cost him 39 pounds 10/-. Gordon Parnell had a 350 cc O.H.V.
CHATER LEA with an oil-cooled Blackburne engine. Gordon
Renfrey had a 250 LEVIS 2-stroke. Frank Elton had a 1926 250 cc
B.S.A. Don Parnell had a 350 A.J.S.
Peter Dawson had a 1929 500 cc “Slopey” B.S.A. with a Goulding
sidecar – which he gave me a magnificent ride in!
All these people earned regular money!
Frank Elton! Each day he rode a HARLEY DAVIDSON and
delivery box, for MacPhersons, and got paid for it! Ron Brown?
He had two motorbikes, a 1928 350 s.v. A.J.S., which he rode to
school! And a 148 cc Villiers-engined REX ACME which he raced
at Sellicks Beach when beach racing was allowed for cars and bikes
as a fully organised sport!
That REX ACME had an unusual attribute. Ron could make it kick
backwards and run in reverse. Reverse was only on a few sidecar
jobs, not little 2-strokes. I mention that his father’s and uncle’s
business, the Motor Credit Co. in Gawler Place had to be sold after
a dissatisfied customer walked into the office and shot Ron’s uncle
dead. The building became Sven J Kallin’s motorcycle business. A
showroom and service department to visit and drool over
motorcycles.
The DOUGLAS had an acetylene gas generator for head and tail
lights which had to be lit with a match. Carbide was put in the lower
part of a container and water was put in the upper part. When lights
were needed the water was turned on and dripped onto the carbide,
which generated gas. This gas was piped through rubber hose to the
lamps. At anything over 25 m.p.h. the wind blew the light out!
6
A trick we could do with Carbide was to put some in a bottle,
throw it into a fish pond, wait for the explosion and the stunned fish
would float to the surface, to be harvested.
My first motorcycle accident was when the bike slipped on a wet
road and I was almost run over by a 1934 TERRAPLANE car which
skidded to avoid me. I was clad in leather and didn’t draw blood but
had a few sore spots. The Doug. had broken pedals, bent handlebar
and paint ground off. I had two other crashes over a period of 60
years of motor-cycling on 37 motorbikes.
The DOUGLAS cost me 22 pounds in repairs. It broke a
crankshaft . . . twice. By 1937 it was ready to break another
crankshaft. I drooled over an ARIEL Red Hunter but @127 pounds
I couldn’t afford that! I drooled after MATCHLESS , and B.S.A.
Blue Stars, CALTHORPE, NORTON, EXCELSIOR Manxman,
LEVIS, the ANZANI, COTTON, A.J.S., and the ROYAL ENFIELD
Bullet, as well as PANTHERS, SCOTTS and B.M.W.s. I’d love an
ARIEL Square Four. The S.A. Police rode ARIELS with Dusting
sidecars! What better recommendation than that?
I settled for the ROYAL ENFIELD @ 67 pounds 10/-. For an
additional 3 pounds 10 shillings I got a speedo. I contacted my
mates. After tea we three went down to the Bay for a swim, and
waited until after dark so I could use the electric headlamp for the
return trip.
My Physics and Chemistry teacher became my friend because he
had a 1936 FORD 10 and a RUDGE-WHITWORTH which had,
(the first I heard of), 4 valves per head. He held the unofficial speed
record between Adelaide and Mount Gambier, through the Coorong.
I let him test out my brand new “Bullet”, and when he returned, the
speedo revealed he had done more miles than I had!
COULD BE CONTINUED
Here’s a DOUGLAS! (And John Simp.)
Notice the gas headlight.

July is a working bee at Showground. If it rains – Sat 14.
More than 200 sites are already booked.
Hugh suggested collecting site fees at the gate, instead of
collecting site fees at the sites. Barry pointed out that
collecting at the gate is so slow that traffic banks up in the
street.
PLATES REGISTRAR’S REPORT: Alan displayed the new C.A.M.C. Backing Plates for number plates.
Alan Thompson signs your Conditional Registration forms –
(Form 1259). When signing Form 1259, Alan determines whether the C.A.M.C. Backing Plates are warranted for your vehicle. Alan recommends Wednesday nights at TAFE Workshop. The next semester starting 25 July costs $100 for the 18 weeks. And he asked our treasurer for a $1200 cheque to pay the Workshop rent for the semester.

GENERAL BUSINESS Voting for Allan Goodchild’s acceptance of
membership – resulted in the affirmative.
Alan Thompson reported on the Coffee Run 30
June – to Olympic Hotel, attended by him and Jill,
Peter and Sue and Tim and Ting, and found Geoff
and Barbara, and Trish, already settled in, there.
Malcolm Chaplin reported that he trailered home his 1950
COMMER one and 1/4 ton truck, for repairs.
Tim O’Keeffe has his CHARGER pulled apart, for repairs.
Kevin White pointed out confusing wording, on the purple
Certificate of Approved Operations that we keep in the
glovebox of club cars with H Plates.
The form always said “Use only in authorised club events”,
but now has added “Use for 60 days subject to Log Book
conditions”.
Chairman said, yes that’s right - the purple form says both –
You can use the vehicle for club events, and also, use it for
60 days of general use, outside of club authorised events, if
needed.
(Keep the purple form in the glovebox. And don’t forget to
put the date in your Log Book before starting out. (The fine
is more than $400.)
And closed the Meeting at 8.47 p.m.
John Rickett’s surprise: This is a spanner. It was left on a nut, behind a panel
in the boot of John Rickett’s Riley. John removed the
panel to service the tail-light. There was the spanner!
left there by a mechanic, years ago.
And the upholsterer didn’t see it there, either. He
fitted the panel; and the spanner was hidden forever.
Last year, Geoff Armour found a spanner which was
hidden for years on top of his Volkswagen’s engine
- left there by a mechanic!
