Editor’s Foreword

Another two months, another host of excit-

ing events here at UTP! The months seemed

to have a very clear theme, with several com-

petitions being held this November & De-

cember, including the UTP National Rapid &

Blitz, UTP Tennis Close, Quiz Wise, Vocab

Challenge and Karnival Sukan Perpaduan.

HOT would like to congratulate the victors of

every contest, and also offer our consolation

to those who were not so lucky. Give it your

all next year guys!

Event organising committee mem-

ber, Lee Weng Soon (CE, 1st

Year/2nd Sem), says that this is the

first time UTP has organised a

World Chess Federation (FIDE)

rated tournament where players

may improve their universal FIDE

ratings by performing well in tour-

nament. The event was jointly or-

ganised by UTP Chess Dragon,

Fundamental and Applied Science

Student Ambassadors (FASSA),

Malaysian Chess Federation

(MCF), Persatuan Catur Negeri

Perak (PICA), and Jabatan Belia

Dan Sukan Negeri Perak.

Tronoh, 18th November- The Nation-

al Rapid & Blitz Chess Champion-

ships held at UTP’s Multi-Purpose

Hall for two days were without any

major surprises. The tournament’s

highest rated participant, Filipino

player Rolando Nole (International

Master), bagged first place in the

Open category for both Rapid and

Blitz tournaments, with compatriot

and fellow tournament favourite Ian

Udani coming in just behind him for

both events. Nole, the only player

that day with coveted chess title-

International Master (IM), left with

total winnings of RM1500.

UTP’s very own Cedric Lemuel Lee

(CE, 1st Year/2nd Sem) completed his

first ever Open tournament with a

respectable 3.5 points from a possi-

ble 8 in each event, taking home the

Best UTP Player award. It was a

considerable feat for the jovial 19-

year-old as he was competing

against professional chess players

far more experienced than him.

When asked about his small but

meaningful triumph, he comment-

ed, “It’s pretty cool la. I really

didn’t have anywhere else to spend

my 60 bucks (with reference to the

entrance fee) so I took part, and

now I’m UTP’s top player!” Cedric

is a former district player from

Johor.

Nine-year-old chess prodigy

Jagathees Guna Balan produced a

remarkable performance for some-

one his age in an Open event, fin-

ishing with 5 points in the Rapid

tournament. Jagathees is no

stranger to overachieving in the

chess arena, having previously

represented Malaysia in the World

Youth U-8 Championships. Un-

doubtedly, young Jagathees is an

up-and-coming name to looking

out for in the Malaysia chess scene.

Tronoh, 19th November- Equip yourself with as much general

knowledge as possible, show it off, and win something big! That’s

exactly how Quiz Wise 2012 went on at Undercroft recently. We would

like to congratulate the champion group that swept away a whopping

RM700 as the Grand Prize!

“That guy wearing the black T-shirt, he is very intelligent. He knows

the answers even before the questions are completed,” said Ammar

Fahmi Abdullah (PE, Foundation 1st Sem.). Ammar was referring to

Chandra Shekhor from group Armageddon which won the competition.

Chandra (ME, 2nd Yr/2nd Sem.) was seen as the dominant participant

in his group consisting of Ilaman Gulesenov (PE, 2nd Yr/ 2nd Sem.)

and Annadurdy Anash (EE, Final Yr/Final Sem.), another two brilliant

minds.

Quiz Wise 2012 is the fourth instalment of the event which happens

annually in UTP. The Project Manager this time around was 21-year-

old Tareq Muhammad al-Shami (PE, 1st yr/ 2nd sem) from Yemen.

Kudos to him and his committee members for making Quiz wise 2012,

sponsored by Have It Late, a grand success. Have It Late is a small

student-run convenience store in Village 4, with operating hours of

11pm to 4am.

One of the main highlights of the event was a performance by Inter-

beats, UTP’s very own hip hop dance team. Besides that, there were

performances from Mozambican students and a piano recital. During

intervals, the audience was tested on their general knowledge, with

souvenirs being handed out as prizes for correct answers.

A total of 35 teams, with 3 members each, took part in the event this

year. The competition started with a knockout round at 6.00 p.m. In

this round the groups had to answer 40 questions in 30 minutes on

paper. The four teams that got through this round were Apple, Arma-

geddon, Have It Late (not to be confused with event sponsors, Have It

Late) and Tahu Sumedang.

Eventually Armageddon emerged as champions while Tahu

Sumedang, consisting of Alfian Rachman, Rifqi Randi and Fakhri

Akhdan, finished as 1st runner-up. Have It Late, consisting of

Mahmoud Tareq Shaheen, Mochtar Bebaha and Aaron Chia Yun Zhen

was the 2nd runner-up and 3rd runner-up was Apple, consisting of Nik

Aieman Raziq, Muhammad Haziq and Muhammad Danial.

VIPs present at this memorable event were Mr. Marfauza Bin Mat

Jusoh (Senior Executive, Student Support Service), Mr. Saiful Hizam

(International Student Adviser), Ms. Nurizzati Binti Ramli (Deputy

President, Student Representative Council), Mr. Motasem Ab-

dulaghader (Secretary 1, International Student Council) and Ms. La-

bina Patricia (Vice President, International Student Council).

Tronoh, 25th November – “Explore Traditions, Discover

Yourself” carnival was held to display the contemporary

artwork of our local artists featuring the uniqueness of di-

verse Malaysian heritage and arts. The carnival, held as part

of Festival Apresiasi Seni Budaya (FARSYA 2012), ena-

bles them to truly express their individuality and exhibit

their works in the liberty of heart and mind.

There were several competitions and games held for visi-

tors. One of the highlights was a pottery workshop. Partici-

pants get to experience first-hand how to mould Labu

Sayong, a form of Perak’s cultural pride in pottery. The

games conducted were fun and interactive games consisting

of local and international origin.

Among the games played which originated from Malaysia

were Carrom, Congkak, Sepak Raga Ratus, Tuju Guli and

Tuju Tin. There was also an interesting game of Chinese

Chess, one which is almost unknown due to the bigger

western chess overshadowing it.

Several agencies that were invited to the event like Tourism

Malaysia, Ministry of Tourism Malaysia, Perbadanan

Kemajuan Kraftangan Perak, Balai Seni Lukis Negara,

Kementerian Perpaduan, Kebudayaan & Kesenian,

Yayasan Kesenian Perak, traditional food and handicraft

entrepreneurs around Perak answered inquiries relating to

heritage and arts issues that are disregarded and obscure.

By Adhwa Anuar, ICT Foundation/2nd sem

Some of the heritage exhibition items have almost disap-

peared even!

The importance of the event was to spread information about

the uniqueness of Malaysian heritage. The carnival was

hoped to promote integration. It is also in conjunction with

the government campaign on improving awareness of the

arts, cultures and heritage among students.

The organizer, The Arts and Culture Lifestyle of Sekretariat

Rakan Muda Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (SRMUTP)

organized the event with the theme “Explore Tradition, Dis-

cover Yourself” in hope that vital values of the Malaysian

arts and culture will be embraced and relived by the youth.

Culture should not be left to die with time and be devoured

by foreign culture but should be promoted and grown instead.

In general, our youth nowadays, have forgotten the vital val-

ues of our Malaysian arts and culture as though it has died

with time. As Malaysian youths, we must embrace this pre-

cious gift from the past and do our best to relive what our

ancestors’ have left for our generation and the generations to

come.

Tronoh, 23th November – “I never thought I could actually win

the tournament!” This is what Amirul Ariff bin Sazali (CE, 2nd

Year, 2nd Sem) had to say of his triumph in the recent UTP

Tennis Close Championship. The event, which saw a healthy

number of participants this year, was organised by Sekretariat

Rakan Muda, and held at UTP tennis courts on the 22nd and

23rd of November.

Amirul, whose preparation for the tournament was constantly

being disrupted by unfavourable weather conditions, expressed

immense surprise with his victory, and thanked God for his

achievement. He was also delighted at being able to gain an

upper hand over his contender in the final, Mohd Zulkarnain B.

Hashim, who knocked him out in last year’s semi-finals. “My

opponent in the final is an extremely good player. Alhamdulil-

lah, thanks to God, after playing under the burning hot sun I

managed to beat him,” said Amirul.

In the women’s category, it was newcomer Syazwani binti

Mohd Ali (ME, 1st Year, 1st Sem) who emerged as champion,

beating Wan Nooraishah binti Wan Abdul Kadir (CV, 1st Year,

1st Sem) in the final. Syazwani (Syaza), who only enrolled here

at UTP back in September, was just as surprised with her win:

“I wasn't expecting the victory at all since all the players have

played really well during the tournament!” Like Amirul, Syaza

only began training a week prior to the event, which explained

why the victory exceeded her expectations.

When asked if they would be returning to defend their titles,

both champions expressed their eagerness to do just that, with

Amirul hoping he will not be too busy in his 3rd Year to prepare

for next year’s tournament.

Unfortunately, not everyone went home a winner that day. For

some, it was simply a learning experience. Vincent Koh (CE,

1st Year, 1st Sem) and Cedric Lemuel Lee (CE, 2nd Year, 2nd

Sem), teaming up for the doubles event, lost all their matches

but were still happy to have participated. “Next year we’ll be

champs!” said Vincent, who tells us that his partnership with

Cedric is still new, and will take time to develop into a force to

be reckoned with. That’s the spirit guys!

Event organising committee member Khairul Anwar Bn. Mu-

hajir (2nd Year, 2nd Sem) told HOT that there’s talk of an offi-

cial UTP Tennis Club on the way soon. According to Khairul,

rumour has it that Block B (a reference to the co-curriculum

department) is looking to establish some new sports clubs, as

the new Vice-Chancellor is apparently a sports-lover himself.

Are there some exciting changes in store for sports fans here at

UTP? We’ll just have to wait to see!

considered as a medium for UTP’s female

students to enjoy outdoor activities and to

promote a healthy lifestyle. The theme for

Hey Ladies 2012 was “Vibrant, Vogue and

Versatile”. Organisers hope to develop the

event into an annual program. Hey Ladies

project manager Izyan Farhana Kaher,

(CE, 2nd year/ 2nd sem) highly recom-

mends Hey Ladies to all female students

of UTP, as she considers it a platform for

sisterhood bonding.

TRONOH, 1 December- If it’s

adventure that you seek, then this

unique collaboration between

Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar Uni-

versiti Teknologi Petronas

(MPPPUTP) and HELWI will

surely satisfy your thirst for

adrenaline. These eye-catching

events were organized specifical-

ly for the female community here

at UTP, i.e., its female staff and

students. The purpose of conduct-

ing the event was to develop the

female community in Universiti

Teknologi Petronas (UTP). Hey

Ladies comprised of two main

events, “With You” and “Keep

Calm and Off to Gua Tem-

purung”, with the latter being the

highlighted event. “With You”

was a one-day event organized on

the 30th of November 2012 to

inculcate love and respect towards the cleaning staff in UTP, es-

pecially the women. Activities included sharing sessions by one

of UTP’s own final year students, Ms.Nurnazihah Aziz followed

by a brief motivational talk by Puan Maznah, UTP’s counselor.

The main event, “Keep Calm and Off to Gua Tempurung”, saw

the participation of approximately 30 students. The event was

TRONOH, December 6th- The Eng-

lish Language Club of UTP recently

organised Self-Management for Eng-

lish Students Week, a week filled

with fun-packed educational activi-

ties for students here at UTP. Among

the events organised as part of the

program was a book fare, Vocab

Challenge and a Scrabble tourna-

ment.

The book fare was a big hit as it

brought highly sought after books for

low and reasonable prices. There

were numerous books of various

languages, giving the book-worms a

tough decision on choosing their

favourites. Multimedia accessories

and stationaries were also sold at

moderate prices here at Pocket C.

A Vocab Competition was also

held on 5th of December. Partici-

pants in groups of four had to de-

fine given words and brainstorm

for words of similar meaning. Be-

sides improving participants’ vo-

cabulary, this competition also

promoted teamwork and brought

out the best in participants’ com-

munication skills. The winners

walked away not only beaming

with pride but also with a cash

prize of RM300.

The club is proud of its achieve-

ment and aspires for more partici-

pation from the students of UTP in

their upcoming events. Next up on

their schedule is a Christmas Visit

to an old folk’s home.

Tronoh, 20th November- A Charity Food

Fair organized by UTP Rotaract Club has

successfully attracted throngs of UTPians

to contribute substantively to the funding

of an upcoming goodwill project in Cam-

bodia.

Stationed along V3-V5 walkway, the

food fair carried on for three day from

5pm to 12am starting from 18th Novem-

ber. Stalls that were set up sold Mingo

Mingo ice cream, Uncle Bob Fried

Chicken, Takoyaki, burger bakar, otah,

oblong, fried ice cream, nuggets, French

Fries and herbal eggs which were strung

out and quickly snapped up by the cus-

tomers. It was initially a big challenge to

the organizing team in terms of publicity

as not many people were aware of it.

However, well-planned intensive publici-

ty via Internet had disseminated the news

rapidly throughout campus. It was heart-

warming to see cash come pouring as

they were going to be used for a charita-

ble purpose of providing clean water sup-

plies to Cambodian kids.

ple. UTP grabs all the opportunities possi-

ble to market itself as a recognized top

university offering internationally recog-

nized industry-relevant programs.

Some points learnt on how to market

yourself in the working world. First of all,

you must be different from others in terms

of thinking skill. Not only challenge your-

self but also enhance your communication

skills. Image holds it all since people

judge a book by its cover. Next, be confi-

dent and proof your capability, be willing

to spend money on activities that

strengthen soft skills. Do have friendly

competitions to get ahead in academic as

well as co-curriculum.

Lastly, UTP graduates are a rare breed so

we do have an extra edge against other

graduates!

Tronoh, December 5th- “It is not slick-

ness, polish, uniqueness, or cleverness

that makes a brand a brand. It is truth. --

Harry Beckwith” quotes the President of

Rotary Club of Kinta.

Rotarian Zulkarnan, President of Rotary

Club of Kinta, Manager of Corporate

Service UTP, was invited to be the

speaker for a Marketing Talk entitled

“UTP’s Branding Journey”. It was con-

ducted by RACUTP in the afternoon,

from 2pm to 4pm at Pocket D3. The pur-

pose of the talk is to help UTP graduates

brand themselves as well-rounded gradu-

ates and outstand themselves in the work-

ing world other than getting flying col-

ours upon graduation.

What comes across your mind when we

talk about branded products? People are

attracted by branding nowadays. Brands

and their promising taglines are power-

ful. Labelling is important after all.

Stakeholders make decisions based on

their impression on the ‘products’ even

before seeing it! How you choose your

university is also based upon that princi-

his speech at the opening ceremony.

Karnival Sukan Perpaduan SRN is a sports

program organized by Sekretariat Rukun

Negara University Teknologi PETRONAS

(SRNUTP) in co-operation with Jabatan

Perpaduan Negara dan Integrasi Nasional.

Tronoh, 11th November- After being held

for 4 days, The Sport Carnival Unity SRN

ended successfully at Main Hall.

Participated by SRN clubs from other uni-

versities even from East Malaysia, the num-

ber of participants reached approximately

300. The participants hail from various

parts of Malaysia, with representatives

from, UUM Kedah, UMP Pahang, USM

Penang and many more.

According to Tuan Haji Mohamed Noor

Rosli Bin Baharam, Deputy Vice Counselor

of UTP, sports can be used as a platform to

promote co-operation between races. By his

own experience as a volleyball player, he

learned a lot on working as a team in trying

to win.

TRONOH, 25th November– The

two things that you will find most

fascinating about Malaysia is its

people and culture. The Festival

Apresiasi Seni Budaya (FARSYA)

2012 has served its purpose well

by brilliantly exploring not only

cultures of the three main ethnic

groups in Malaysia, but also those

of international students.

This event was a combination of

Karnival Sukan Rakyat (KSR) and

Malam Prihatin Sanggar Mustika

(MPSM), with the latter being the

main event. Developing a deeper

understanding towards the main

cultures and races in Malaysia

was the main purpose of the

events.

The activities held included tradi-

tional games competitions such as

the Congkak competition and a

Labu Sayong demonstration. Or-

ganisers also prepared a variety

of world famous Malaysian

delicacies to be enjoyed.

Telecommunications company

DiGi was the main sponsor of
