“Everybody can be great because everybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You don’t have to know Einstein’s Theory of Relativity to serve. You don’t have to know the second theory of thermo-dynamics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love."

- February 4, 1968, Ebenezer Baptist Church, Atlanta, GA

The National Youth Leadership Council, HandsOn, and generationOn invite you to join us at the 22nd Annual National Service-Learning Conference to help answer President Obama’s call. As the president said when signing the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act: "We need your service, right now, at this moment in history. . . I am asking you to stand up and play your part. I am asking you to help change history's course."

Service-learning practitioners know that students have been making signifi cant contributions to their communities for years, supported by adults steeped in the evidence base for high-quality practice. Now is the time to share this good news in education and demonstrate service-learning’s academic outcomes.

Help us showcase the importance of service-learning to the future of education by joining us in Atlanta for four days that will challenge, inspire, and provoke you. We hope to see you there!

Service-learning is an inherently engaging teaching strategy, however educators can make service-learning even more engaging. During this dynamic session, experience easy-to-implement and powerful ways to:

• develop genuine participation• conceptualize ideas• encourage original thinking• motivate self-generated learning• increase the quality of questions being asked• remove writing blocks• excite every student about reading• enliven refl ection

Useful at all grade levels and with all students, these strategies improve the service-learning process and reinvigorate us as educators. Come prepared for action!

Schools at the Core of Community Change: It’s Time to Put Service-Learning to WorkPresenters: Youth Service America Staff, DCWednesday, April 69:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Put service-learning theory into action, positioning your school at the core of community change. Let’s reverse the focus of communities changing schools to schools changing communities. Learn how to implement the “service as a solution” approach, putting young people at the center of community change while increasing academic achievement and workplace readiness skills. This session emphasizes four themes:

• Realizing teh duration and intensity standards, which research shows to be the most critical, through a comprehensive implementation of each stage of the IPARD/C process.

• Embracing strategic service, focused on addressing big problems of local, national, or global importance and their root causes.

• Building and sustaining effective school-community partnerships through authentic collaborations that engage community experts in long-term relationships with students and educators.

• Measuring and demonstrating dual outcomes — impact on both community and youth — while telling your story to key audiences.

Designing Academically Rigorous Service-Learning Experiences - IS101

Presenters: Susan Root, NYLC, WI; Caryn Pernu, NYLC, MN

One obstacle to ensuring student academic learning through service-learning may be the challenges of planning standards-based projects. This immersion session is designed to help teachers think deeply about the abstract concepts and skills they want students to develop service-learning experiences. Join NYLC’s research team, Susan Root and Caryn Pernu, in a hands-on workshop that explores using Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe’s backward planning model to design service-learning around academic content standards. You’ll learn a process for tying service-learning experiences directly to the standards you’re expected to meet in your classroom, explore strategies for assessing student learning throughout the service-learning experience, and create a plan to boost your students’ academic knowledge and skills — while they contribute to their community.

Making Service-Learning Visible as an Academic Strategy - IS102

Presenters: Suzanne Martin, Martin Research Consulting, NY;

Justin Greeves, Harris Interactive, CT

While seasoned service-learning practitioners understand the power of service-learning in engaging young people in their education, many of our colleagues, school administrators, parents, and policy-makers don’t yet know about or understand service-learning. Hear from a panel of experts on communications and educational research and educational policy on how to craft messages that will help you get to the heart of why service-learning matters in schools today. Come together with like-minded individuals and organizations to build broad-based public support for service-learning and engaged education in our schools, communities, and nation.

Effective Strategies for Service-Learning Trainers - IS103

We'll report on a study of the approaches of 10 well-respected service-learning trainers.

Drs. James and Pamela Toole possess a lifelong love for studying the art and science of effective professional development. They value training as a lever to change the world.
