There are many skin conditions that affect horses. Some such as ringworm can be prevented by good horse care. Always clean your equipment especially when using it with different horses. If you see a bare spot or thin area on the horse’s coat always treat it and check for lice.

*Lice are very common. In extreme cases the poor animal will be almost bare from scratching, often bleeding, thin and anaemic. There are plenty of powders and washers to treat lice but for best results I use a back line (Switch). Its simple and works longer but it is expensive. Remember to clean and powder any rugs and clean saddlecloths and brushes as well.

*Ringworm is a round area that loses hair and is dry or flaky at first. An anti-fungal cream applied a few times a day will kill the bug but keep applying the cream till the hair starts to grow back as ringworm is a persistent little bug. Check all over the horse for any more and check any other horses that have contact with the affected one. In extreme cases wash the area with iodine based wash, dry and apply the cream. Clean gear!

*Greasy heal/muddy fever/rain scald are the same type of fungus but affects different parts of the body. The skin loses hair leaving wet, blistery skin with scabs. It’s very painful and can scar if not treated. Wet conditions and muddy paddocks are the cause so try to keep the horse dry and out of the mud. Wash area with iodine based wash, dry and apply an anti-fungal cream or a wound lotion such as blue spray. Pottie’s Green Ointment works on ringworm and scold. Once healed rub a vitamin E cream into area to prevent scaring.

*Saddle sores and girth galls are blisters caused by ill-fitting saddles. Always check your horse’s back and girth area after riding, if hair and/or skin has rubbed off wash area and apply a healing cream. Buy an anti-gall girth, a thicker saddlecloth, a back protector or a better fitting saddle.

*Sunburn affects the pink areas of skin on the muzzle, sheath, eyes and udders in mares. Paint, pintos and white horses are mostly affected but a horse with a large blaze to the nostrils will also have trouble. Treat with a sunburn cream or zinc and castor oil with heal and protect the areas. There are sun protector rugs and nose flaps available at saddle shops or house the horse in a shaded yard or a stable of a day. Apply UV cream when out exercising or in the paddock.

These are some of the most common skin ailment to affect horses. Next month I’ll talk about some more

skin conditions. Bye for now and happy horse – ing around. Sandy.

With cool nights mildew and fungus can be seen on leaves of Dahlias, Hydrangea, petunias, Delphiniums, Easter Daisies, pumpkins, cucumber and zucchini. Do not spray pumpkins, cucumbers, zucchini as they are finished now; remove the plants and dispose of; don’t put any leaves or vines with mildew or fungus in the compost but place in the garbage or feed to the goats. Cut back flowering plants to about 8cm above the ground. Perennial plants such as polyanthus, Russell lupin and delphinium can be divided and replanted now. Dig in with compost and some animal manure. Vegetables to sow now are broad beans, onion plants can also go in. Flower seedlings to plant now: calendula, stocks, wallflowers, alyssum (sweet alice), poppies, pansies, violas and verbena. Lift gladioli bulbs, store in dry cool airy shed.

PLANT OF THE MONTH EPACRIS Epacidaceae - Native Heath - Native Fuchsia

Ideal plants for sunny or lightly shaded rockery, there are 40 odd species including some extremely showy shrubs. All Epacris need perfectly drained, acid, sandy soil, kept consis-tently moist. This can be achieved by laying flat stones around the plant, providing a cool, moist root run. Cutting the

flower stems encourages dense, bushy growth and many more blooms the following year. Seed is hard to germinate, so semi-hardwood cuttings taken in summer to strike in moist sandy soil are the best method to increase. Mostly grows to about 1m. Flower-ing occurs throughout the year but mostly in spring.

HERB OF THE MONTH ELDER Caprifoliaceae; Sambucus nigra

A perennial deciduous large shrub or small tree, with oval serrated leaves; the elder has a height and spread of about 4.5 m. Its’ spreading branches bear flat heads of small star-shaped creamy-white flowers in late spring and early summer. These are followed in early autumn by drooping bunches of purplish-black juicy berries. A common wild plant, it is part of the

folklore of several countries where ancient legends link it with magic. Cultivation Sow ripe berries 2.5 cm deep in pots outdoors. Plant the seedlings out in a semi-shaded position when large enough. Or plant 30cm hard-wood cuttings in a bed in mid-to-late autumn and plant out the following winter. Cut back hard in winter. Elders tolerate most soils; S.Niga is good for very chalky sites. Uses An infusion of the muscatel scented flowers can be used to treat colds. Elderflower water is good for the complexion and the eyes. The flowers are also used in an ointment to treat burns, while an ointment made from the leaves is suitable for bruises and sprains. The berries are rich in vitamin C and are often the main ingredient of jams and cordials. For centuries wine has been made from both the berries and the flowers. Flowers and fruit also used as an insect repellent and used for dyes.

ELDER FLOWER FIZZ Elder flowers must be picked on a dry sunny day as the yeast is mainly in the pollen. Ingredients: 14.5 litres water; 700g sugar; Juice and thinly peeled rind and juice of 1 lemon; 2 tblsp (30ml) cider or wine vinegar; 12 elder flower heads. 1. Bring the water to the boil. Pour into a sterilised container, add sugar, stirring until dissolved. 2. When cool, add the juice and rind of the lemon, vinegar and elderflowers .Cover with several layers muslin and leave for 24 hours. 3. Filter through muslin into strong glass bottles. This drink is ready after 2 weeks. Serve chilled.

Inside Your Local Council …. Keeping you in touch with the latest from Goulburn Mulwaree Council.

COUNCIL MEETING BRIEFS – 17 APRIL 2007

Resource Sharing Council has endorsed sharing some resources with surrounding Council’s in principle and a draft memorandum of understanding on the details of how that would proceed will be drafted and submitted to Council. Fleadh Nua Council voted to defer deciding whether or not to continue supporting the Irish festival until after the organisers have had a chance to speak to Council. Dutton Rally Council resolved to support the Dutton Rally on the proviso that costs associated with that support are the respon-sibility of the organisers. SERAS Funding Council resolved to deny the request for a 60% increase in the annual contribution to the South East Region Acad-emy of Sport. Marys Mount Shopping Centre, Gourock Avenue Council resolved to refuse the development application on the grounds that it was inappropriately located due to the strategic planning for the area, because it would have an adverse affect on the amenity of the area and be-cause the proposal would prejudice the proper and orderly planning for the area. 2020 Strategy & Draft LEP Council resolved to endorse the three-month exhibition of the 2020 plan and Draft LEP once it has received the s65 certificate placing the plan on exhibition. It also resolved to place emphasis on the existing planning controls in any assessment and determination of any Development Application prior to the adoption of the new LEP. Pool to Stay Open Council has resolved to keep the Indoor Pool open despite storages falling below 20% because it is recognised to provide recreational benefits to the community and forms an important community activity. Operation has been switched to the indoor pool, which uses significantly less water to operate. Cookbundoon Sporting Field Irrigation System A project to irrigate Cookbundoon Sporting Field using a pop up sprinkler system is nearing completion; with all underground work completed and the contractor now concentrating on site clean up and construction of the irriga-tion pump station and controls. Water Management Strategy Progress Council received a report on the progress of the Water Management Strategy, including the impact of the pro-posed Wingecarribee pipeline on the Strategy. Council resolved to adopt the course of action set out in the report, which includes carrying out further assessment of the pipeline concept, demand forecasts and yield hydrology, and to continue with the Integrated Water Cycle Management Plan.

Do not use leaves that have been sprayed with insecticide. Arthritis Remedy: At night cut 3 sun-dried apricots into quarters, put in mug and pour boiled water over. Cover & leave til morning. Before you eat or drink anything, eat the apricots with a teaspoon & then sip the juice. After the apricots put 2 tea-spoons of honey & 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in a mug, pour boiled water on top; cool then sip and drink.
