PROGRAMS & SERVICES

With no government or any ongoing funding, Hopewell continues to keep its doors open with the support of the community. Our professionalism is attained with the help of skilled volunteers who generously offer their expertise. This year Hopewell was a proud and grateful recipient of “Probonopalooza”, a 48 hour event by design studio Character Creative. Two designers worked extremely hard to design and build our new web site. Our sincerest thanks to this team of “Do – Gooders”!

In 2011 Hopewell was able to offer support groups for those struggling with an eating disorder, a group specifically for those struggling with binge eating, and a family and friends support group. Each group offered a supportive environment in which to share experiences, acquire positive coping skills, gain supportive advice and help to eliminate the stigma and secrecy surrounding eating disorders. The “Bridging the Gap” mentoring program continued to match individuals who are transitioning from eating disorder treatment back into their daily lives with a mentor who has recovered from an eating disorder.

“This self-help group has been a really important step in my recovery.” “The group was a lifesaver for me.”

In May Hopewell held a one-day conference to bring together family and friends of individuals who are struggling with an eating disorder. The event was attended by parents, siblings, partners and spouses. Facilitated by Diana Norton, speakers included Dr. Steve Feder of the CHEO Eating Disorder Program, Dr. Hany Bissada of the Regional Centre for the Treatment of Eating Disorders, and psychologists Dr. Cathy Kerzner and Dr. Joan MacDonald. Participants told us how much they appreciated access to these local eating disorder experts and found the conference informative and worthwhile.

“I was very impressed that the speakers took the opportunity to meet with family members”

In June a partnership between Hopewell and Sandy Hill CHC offered “Craving Change”, a series of four workshops on how to understand your relationship with food.

Throughout the year Hopewell delivered presentations and workshops to schools, workplaces, and community organizations and participated in health and mental health fairs. Several grade 10 student groups participating in the Youth Philanthropy Initiative chose Hopewell. They presented information to their schools making them excellent ambassadors for Hopewell - getting our messaging out and ensuring that the students in their schools know where to get help for an eating disorder when they need it.

Eating Disorders Awareness Week saw Hopewell partner with the health promotion departments at both Carleton University and the University of Ottawa to build awareness of eating disorders. Events included a screening of ‘Teen Truth’, mental health fairs, information tables and a bake sale. Students at Algonquin College Residences also participated in a health fair. Elsewhere in the community Starbucks held a “Be Comfortable in Your Genes Day” and local artists shared their work at the “Common Beauty” Art Show.

“A COMMON BEAUTY”

This year once again Hopewell hosted an art show by local artists as part of Eating Disorders Awareness Week. “A Common Beauty” art show displayed at the Heartwood House Gallery throughout the month of February. As a society, we have become uncomfortably familiar with the distorted views of the human body offered to us by the media. We are constantly bombarded by images of the perfect man or the perfect woman. This preoccupation with perfection is unwarranted and unhealthy. But all around us, every day, we see beauty: it takes form in kindness, intelligence, a word, a gesture. Rather than isolating beauty in an ideal or exemplary body type, this show of art by local artists celebrated the common beauty that occurs every day around us; physical, emotional or something else. The show was very well received with many people attending the Vernissage. Thanks to all the volunteers and artists who participated in this event.

‘LOVE YOUR LIFE’ VALENTINE’S GALA

Chaired by Marion Grobb Finkelstein the 2011 “Love Your Life” Valentine event was a great success. 165 guests came out to support, to eat, to ‘sip ‘n’ tip’, to bid on a silent auction item and of course to dance! A huge thank you to the Hilton Garden Inn who once again provided delicious food, a fabulous venue and the “Everything Hilton” raffle prize. Thanks to Kimberley Sullivan for doing an amazing job emceeing the evening; Pelee Island Winery for the “Sip ‘n’ Tip” and door prizes; Erin Fitzpatrick for portrait photographs; Quality Entertainment for the lighting, Advantage Audio Visual Rentals for the stage; and the incredible Showtime Party Band for keeping everyone on the dance floor until late. The event raised over $10, 000 for Hopewell’s programs and services.
