Over 20 years ago, Hope Haven International Ministries tasked senior Dordt Engineering students with designing a pediatric wheelchair. Out of that research and hard work came the KidChair, a wheelchair model utilized in HHIM wheelchair distributions for more than two decades and still today. At the time of the original design, the model could be assembled and shipped for around $100. Throughout the years, the KidChair has proved a sturdy and versatile wheelchair for recipients in developing countries. However, helpful critiques were compiled over the years on how to take the design to the next level. That meant incorporating a tilt mechanism, better footrest, and a full computer aided design (CAD) model of the wheelchair. Two years ago, Hope Haven re- engaged with a new generation of Dordt Engineering students to see if they were up for the challenge of implementing these design changes. Ben Saarloos, Engineering Instructor / Lab Systems Engineer, presented the project as one of the 63 senior engineering project options for students. Ultimately, the KidChair project was selected and today, eight students are working on the project. Some of the students involved in the project even traveled to Guatemala last year to see firsthand what a wheelchair distribution is like, and witness the process of custom fitting a recipient based on their individual needs. All of the participating students visited the South Dakota State Penitentiary to meet with inmates and observe the HHIM wheelchair manufacturing process. Both experiences have assisted the students in honing their design. The goal is to have the wheelchair updates completed by the end of this school year. We are thankful to the Dordt students who have worked on this project – their diligent design will impact the lives of people in need for years to come! FAITH. COMMUNITY. POSSIBILITIES.

Two years ago, Hope Haven re-engaged with a new generation

of Dordt Engineering students to see if they were up for the challenge of implementing these design changes.

PLANNED GIVING UPDATESix Reasons Why You Might Want a Living Trust

Hope Haven can help get you started in creating your legacy! Interested in learning more about wills or living trusts? Contact Mark Siemonsma at 712.470.0298 or [email protected]

1. Preserve Privacy A will is a public document everyone can read, whereas a trust is private.

2. Avoid Probate Unlike a trust, a will is subject to probate which can be time consuming and costly.

3. Property Management Unlike a will, a living trust provides for a trustee to manage your property.

4. Asset Protection A trust can be created with provisions to protect your assets from creditors.

5. Capacity Planning A trust enables you to plan in the event you can no longer care for yourself.

6. Dependents A trust allows you to distribute income to

children and care for special needs.

During the recent University of Iowa Winter Games, the Spirit Lake My Day program participated in one of the hosted activities – a Chili Cook-Off! Participants prepared and presented their chili recipe to the crowd for taste testing, and had a fun time doing it!

MY DAY IN SPIRIT LAKE COMPETES IN CHILI COOK-OFF

Due to social distancing guidelines brought about by the recent COVID-19 pandemic, Hope Haven communities have been safely practicing recommended measures and refraining from large group activities. During a time of uncertainty, Community Living and My Day participants were motivated to do something unifying, even though congregating together isn’t an option. That manifested in Hope Haven community members creating some inspirational artwork for home windows, offering some happiness and hope to passersby.

At the February 11, 2020 “Involve” conference hosted at Northwestern College, Dan DeVries, Hope Haven Religious Services Coordinator, and Rejoice! Community Church’s Kyle Crist shared their, ““Everyone Welcome!!” Really??” presentation. The conference was about “Fully Embracing All Intellectual Abilities.”

DeVries and Crist’s presentation was described as “Like everyone else, people with intellectual or developmental disabilities want to express their spirituality and belong to a community. This workshop gave participants some tools and resources to help them and their faith communities to take the next faithful step towards welcoming and including the gifts of people with disabilities.”

“COFFEE WITH A COP” IN STORM LAKEThis February’s “Coffee with a Cop” program in Storm Lake, Iowa, was a memorable experience for one resident at our Faith, Hope & Charity division. Malik, a friend and fan of the Storm Lake Police Department, had recently expressed his interest in becoming a police officer. The Storm Lake PD brought this to life on Monday, February 17, and included him as an honorary police officer in their monthly “Coffee with a Cop” program.

Malik joined police officers in greeting community members at the Storm Lake Bakery, and also assisted in delivering donuts to area businesses. “I enjoyed chatting with the officers. They made me feel good, like I was part of the police department,” comments Malik. “I like to be with other people and help them.”

They made me feel good, like I was a part of the police department.
