1Hooray for Hollywood!

Using Movie Musicals in the ESL ClassroomWelcome to the Spring 2014 MA TESOL ConferenceThanks for being here this morning. My name is Carol FlanaganAs you can see, my presentation is about using movie musicals in the ESL classroom Particularly with low level learners

2

So what made me think this might be a good idea?

Ive always been a fan of the American musical both on stage & screen.

I was lucky enough to TA with Terry Doyle at CCSF Civic Center before he retired

I was intrigued when he used this famous scene from Singin in the Rain to create a lesson for low-level learners about emotions (the man is happy, the man is crazy, the man is in love) and to teach the very useful phrase in my opinion

Terry allowed me to teach the lyrics of Singin in the Rain to the students and it proved to me as Dr. Whalley said music is magic3

So let me give you some background on what I found in the existing literature about using movie musicals in the classroom.Nothing.

But I did find lots of research in 4 areas that I think support using movie musicals:The benefits of using filmThe benefits of using musicPlay as a learning toolThe importance of recognizing that Ss have different learning styles4

Why use film in the ESL classroom?1) Authentic material created for native speakers often hard to find for adult low-level learners most geared toward children2) Its a genre thats universally understood from Hollywood to Bollywood3) For better or worse, watching Hollywood movies is how most of the world learns about life in America

5S S I M H PAudience participation

Any idea what this stands for? Hint: it has to do with music

Song Stuck In My Head Phenomenon (earworm)

According to Tim Murphey 1992 article on the discourse of pop musicWe can use music to get the things we want to stick in Ss minds (teach the alphabet with music)

Music is know as the universal language for a reason it is appreciated in all cultures.6

Now lets look at the power of play

Adults dont play enough

Yet according to Peter Gray in Psychology Today play is natures way of teaching us new skills

7Peter Gray in Psychology Todaythe alert but unstressed condition of the playful mind is precisely the condition that has been shown repeatedly to be ideal for the learning of new skillsPlay is an excellent learning tool and (read quote)

And creating a playful atmosphere in the classroom can lower the Ss affective filterAnd create a safe space where its OK to try without being judged

From James & Galbraith 7 learning styles 1984To Howard Gardners Multiple Intelligences 1991Using music & film together reaches Ss who are:Verbal learnersMusical learnersVisual learnersKinesthetic learners clapping, swaying, dancingInterpersonal learners enjoys group activities sing a longIntrapersonal learners can best be taught with creative materials

The take away for me is to remember that Ss learn differently Using as many different kinds of materials and activities as possible will help the largest variety of Ss9

Goals & ObjectivesMy goal for this project - supply teachers of adult ESL learners with a supplemental curriculum that uses authentic materials (movie musicals) and corresponds to the Scope and Sequence of most beginning level texts

My objectives for this project - give teachers examples of how to use movie musicals in lessons and provide them with resources for creating their own lessons and activities

Class this curriculum was created for CCSF, Civic Center Begin Level 1 & 2

Challenges - mixed levels, multi-lingual, open enrollment

Complete description can be found on page 1 of your handout.

Im using the term movie musical broadly examplethanks to a suggestion from Michael Andrews, I used the Theme Song from The Brady BunchTo create a lesson on step relationships (missing from the text but prevalent in the class give example)

So now Id like to walk you through an entire lesson I Created around a 1 min clip of Getting to Know You from The King & I by Rodgers & Hammerstein

Its the story of an English widow who accepts a job in Siam (now Thailand) as teacher to the children and wives of the King.

The clip I chose shows Anna (the teacher) introducing herself to her new Ss

My way of introducing myself to Ss Creating community in a classroom by having the Ss get to know one another

Showed the clip where Anna is introducing herself to her Ss while singing Getting to know youJust watch and listen played several timesLast time played clip-I went around the classroom and shook hands with all the Ss mimicking what was happening on the screen to reinforce the meaning

Brainstorming write suggestions on the board first time rough start I supplied most of the vocabulary, but as I kept brainstorming before each lesson, Ss caught on

13Write your storyUse the questions to help you. What is your name? My name is Carol.Where are you from? I am from New York City. What languages do you speak?_______________What street do you live on?__________________

My name is Carol. I am from New York City. I only speak English. I live on McAllister Street. I live with my cat. Her name is Clara.

Now we are going to learn about each otherA sample of the transparency demo - I answered the questions for meCirculated as Ss answered questionsEnd of class so asked Ss to complete their stories for HW

14

The next dayDelighted the next day when ALL the Ss got up to read their storiesI felt this was verification that this lesson using a clip from a movie musical had lowered affective filter of the Ss Eliminating fears about evaluation and judgmentHelping to make the classroom a safe place to try

Ss who missed class kept bringing their stories to me when they returned even a week to 10 days later

After Ss read their stories, we had a sing along.Provided the lyrics just to that 1 minute clip

15Review from Your Stories Some of these sentences might be wrong. Can you fix them?

I live on 750 Eddy Street._________________________________Daughter name Jane._________________________________I live with my husband. Her name is John._________________________________

Error correction

When I corrected their stories, I noticed common mistakes so I decided to attempt error correction

Struggle since most Ss thought they should make the sentences about them.

But like with brainstorming, repeated attempts at error correction paid off & Ss caught on16My Favorite ThingsRaindrops on roses

Whiskers on kittens

Again expanding the definition of movie musical

My Favorite Things from The Sound of Music Great lyrics for vocabulary, nouns & adjectives (higher level)But film clip from the movie doesnt support lyricsYoutube to the rescue

Miryam Rinkerman, a MA-TESOL trained professional at Passaic County Community College, NJ

And now we come to the sing-a-long portion of my presentation17Bright copper kettles

Warm woolen mittens

18Brown paper packages tied up with string

These are a few of my favorite things19S S I M H PYou are now all experiencing the Song Stuck in my Head Phenomenon

You can thank me later20

I though the film 9 to 5 would be a perfect way to introduce the Work unit. But the film isnt a musical. On youtube I was able to find a great clip that was made using the song with movie scenes.

The URLs for there youtube clips and other resources I found useful are in your handout

Lessons can also be created around themes The immigrant experienceAmerica West Side Story

RacismYouve Got to be Carefully Taught South Pacific

Holidays:Do You Love Me? Fiddler on the Roof - Valentines Day1776 - July 4th / American Independence We Need a Little Christmas Mame

22If you become a teacher by your pupils youll be taught Oscar Hammerstein IIThe first time is the hardest brainstorming, error correction, demo/demo/demo

Perseverance pays off

Vocabulary Ss will let you know lady

Ss love mingles stay after class to complete

Survey says end of semester ng better to survey after each lesson with beginning level Ss
