No budget adjustments

OLD BUSINESS A. Whatley: I would like to report on the Superintendent Search Committee which met in July and were charged with coming up with an advertisement which will be approved at the October SAU Board meeting. I have given each Board member a copy of the plan with the help of some guidance counselors and an English teacher. I have sent a copy of this to each member of the committee. I would like this Board to look at it and if you have any comments or adjustments, I can incorporate that in October. Also, as a result of this search, our advisor indicated that we must be comfortable with putting this outside the State. I am asking the Board to think about this job description; we need to add a moving expense allowance for out of State candidates. I made a list of Superintendents that have been hired in the last six (6) months in New Hampshire and the salary range is from $129,000 to $159,000. I would suggest and presented at our July meeting…we should throw in a number of $150,000. That would be a number we probably would not exceed.

Dr. Littlefield: At the October SAU meeting, I will bring a budget and at the next meeting in November they will approve it and there will be a discussion on what will be budgeted for the successor.

L. Laliberte will be reaching out to the Principals for their input to address the question; what leadership skills would they like to see in a Superintendent.

G. Martakos arrived at 5:45 pm.

Dr. Littlefield reminded the Board that the candidate will look for a cohesive SAU. You are not hiring a Hooksett, Auburn or Candia Superintendent. At your last SAU Board meeting, Ted Comstock laid out a process; there was not an actual vote but there was a consensus on the process. We need to be true to the process. My advice is the person will want to see uniformity. That is why we have the team to coordinate that process.

NEW BUSINESS Instructional Time Schedules Per the State rules, there is a requirement that the Board approve the school schedule annually. There have been no changes since last year. At the elementary level there is an emphasis on Language Arts, the next level has more math and it is equally distributed at the middle school.

G. Martakos motioned to approve the instructional time schedule for the 2017-2018 school year as presented. Seconded by K. Salvas. Vote unanimously in favor.

Full-day Kindergarten – Discussion Dr. Littlefield explained the proposed funding for kindergarten students. Some State aid will be provided and it is a step in the right direction.

Summer Academy at HMS Our Summer Academy Program ran over the course of four weeks, from July 18 to August 10. There was a multifaceted approach to the program again this year, with a focus on math, reading fluency, reading comprehension, and writing. Staff met prior to the Academy and daily during it to plan and adjust instruction to meet each child’s needs. Enrollment for Summer 2017 was 27 students this year, with an estimated 20 to 24 students present each day. Student progress will be monitored during the 2017/2018 school year. Academy staff and the school administration will be meeting in September to reflect upon the program and discuss possible changes to next year’s academy.

NWEA Testing – September 2017 Hooksett Memorial School students will be taking the NWEA Measures of Academic Progress testing during the month of September. Each student will have two testing sessions in one of the computer labs, with each testing session scheduled to last for approximately 90 minutes. The data from this testing provides valuable and highly useful sources of information about individual student performance in the areas of reading and mathematics. These tests help determine a student’s instructional level and measure academic growth from year to year. These computer-based tests provide almost immediate data for staff to use to help guide a more personalized instructional program for each child. HMS will be testing students during the first two to three weeks of school.

Growth Mindset During one of the professional days in late June, staff from HMS and Underhill schools joined for a presentation on Growth Mindset, offered by Hannah C. Mariotti and Sarah Wagner, from Beacon Coaching and Consulting. Together, they have over thirty years experience in both the education and mental health fields. Growth mindset refers to people who think of intelligence as something that can improve and grow with effort and hard work. The concept of a growth mindset was developed by psychologist Carol Dweck and popularized in her book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. Dweck’s educational work centers on the distinction between “fixed” and “growth” mindsets. According to Dweck, “In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits.” Alternatively, “In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment,” writes Dweck. Students who embrace growth mindsets, the belief that they can learn more or become smarter if they work hard and persevere, learn more, learn it quicker and view challenges and failures as opportunities to improve their learning and skills.

Quote to Note “A well-educated mind will always have more questions than answers.”

HSD Technology Updates Summer / September 2017

Summer Projects

The Technology Department has continued working with Google to restructure student accounts to read as follows: HS Grad year student first name last initial @student.sau15.net. This change in the name structure permits teachers and staff to know if the person emailing is a student or employee. Instructions and procedures for all future student email account setup has been documented and shared with appropriate personnel. This is also apart of our Technology Handbook for Tech procedures for consistency in protocols.

Memorial School received over the summer the following technology and has been setup and ready for use in the school:

● 120 Chromebooks distributed in 4 carts.● 30 Touchscreen Chromebooks which is a new lab at Memorial● 19 LED Tv’s 55’ installed● 19 Apple Tv’s setup

Cawley Middle School received the overhaul on the first floor lab with all new iMacs desktops. All iMacs from the lab are being used to complete the 2nd floor lab to be fully functional. All extra iMac are being swapped out with end of life iMacs to put working machines in the classrooms that can be updated. Any additional iMacs have been put in various classrooms as an additional resource for teachers and students.

Underhill and Memorial have wifi and network upgrades that are in progress to updates the wifi infrastructure and school switches. Technology is currently waiting on a timeline from the company responsible for the implementation of the project. This upgrade will improve school bandwidth, wifi access points and permit for a greater number of technological devices on the network as well as provide a stronger platform to support online testing. This will also permit us to finalize our mapping of the network infrastructure of these two facilities.

All labs in all schools have been updated any necessary repairs or replacements of keyboard and mice have been completed, computers have been updated to the latest operating system the computer will permit due to age of the systems. This includes 1 lab at Underhill, 2 labs at Memorial and 2 labs.

The Technology Department has setup a new Help Desk Solution through an Open Source. We are utilizing Spiceworks and have customized the platform to serve all schools in HSD. The tech support system is a simple, user friendly form that provides the tech team immediate notification of a ticket, updates on the status of the ticket and a various amount of reports in order to analyze tech request trends and needs.

Apple Volume Purchasing Program (DEP) currently exists with 27+ apple and itunes accounts. The HSD team is working with Apple to redeploy a new management tool utilizing Lightspeed to manage iPads, iPods with basic management of inventory, updates and application deployment, purchases and to maintain a bulk control of the equipment versus manually working on each device for updates. This is enhanced security, management, accountability and will provide for a more transparent application purchase line items for department disaggregation, i.e. grant, sped, reg ed.

Ongoing or In progress projects include:

○ Reorganization of Google Accounts○ Purging of Accounts from exiting employees○ Network Reconfigurations and mapping○ District Technology Passwords updates○ Technology Procedures Guide○ Data collection for writing the next 3 Yr Technology Plan○ SAU Tech Upgrades○ Firewall Upgrades○ Consolidation of Vendors and Services

Mathematics

Summer Math Work • As of July 1, 2017 New Hampshire school districts are required to have

competencies in grades K-8. This summer teachers from across the SAU worked ingrade level teams to finalize the competency documents and report card statementsfor mathematics that we began working on last summer.

Mathematics Instruction • We will continue to work on pacing through instructional planning of mathematics

instruction this year. NWEA Measures of Academic Progress results suggest thatclassrooms where chapter assessments took place closest to the target dates sawgreater growth than those who were further from the targets during the 2016-2017academic year.

• Instructional coaching in mathematics will also continue this year. The 2016-2017pilot was successful in the area of student achievement and the teachers who tookpart in the process gave positive feedback on the anonymous surveys that werecompleted. I will be working with teachers individually to identify personal strengthsand challenges to help them refine their teaching practices.

New Teacher Training • Teachers who are new to the district along with

some veteran teachers attended math trainingsessions on August 15 & 16. The sessions focusedon how to get students ready to participate andachieve in the mathematics classroom. Setting thestage for success in mathematics is the emphasis ofthe first five lessons that teachers worked on duringthese days.

Discussion focused on the concrete-pictorial-abstract approach, the use of math journals, lesson structure and planning. We also had some fun solving problems!

State Reporting • End of year enrollment & academic reports were finalized and all anomalies resolved

in mid-August to prepare for certification by the Superintendent.• Incoming student rosters, course and student class submissions were submitted to the

NH Department of Education as required at the end of each summer.

Assessment

Smarter Balanced Results • School, district and state level results are still in the preliminary phase until all end of

year submissions are verified by the NH Department of Education. Preliminary stateresults can be found on the NH Department of Education website.

HSD Board Report September 2017

The library media program is off to a running start for the 2017-2018 school year. The

last days of August were spent revitalizing the library media centers with new books,

new equipment and even new staff. Although she will be sorely missed, we are very

happy for Mrs. Diane Lovejoy who retired at the end of last school year.

We extend a warm welcome to Mrs. Josee Eaton, who is replacing Mrs. Lovejoy as the

Library Assistant at Underhill School. Ms. Eaton grew up in Hooksett; she attended

Hooksett Village and Hooksett Memorial Schools. She comes to us with nine years of

experience as the Library Assistant at Bedford High School. Mrs. Eaton holds an

Associates Degree in Legal Studies and has spent many seasons coaching the Ragged

Mountain Ski Team. She and Mrs. Landsman have the Underhill library media center in

tip-top shape for our new and returning students and staff.

We are fortunate to have Ms. Beaudoin and Mrs. Sigel returning to Hooksett Memorial

School and Mrs. Williams at Cawley Middle School. Over the summer months, I worked

along with grade level teams on the English Language Arts, Social Studies & Science

competencies. The entire library media team been busy preparing for the new school

year. As we head into September, the library media team will be focusing on the

following:

- Partnering with classroom teachers to support enhanced student learning, especially in theareas of inquiry and research

- Expanding availability of STEM related services and resources across schools

- Improving access to resources available online and off campus

- Expanding digital content collection across the district

- Strengthening our partnership with the Hooksett Public Library to provide complimentaryservices to our community

Respectfully submitted,

Justine Thain, Library Media Director
