Dear Parents and Friends,
CELEBRATING NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK AT AVELEY CELEBRATING NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK AT AVELEY
PRIMARY SCHOOLPRIMARY SCHOOL
To highlight National Science Week - Food for the Future - Feeding the World, Aveley Primary School set aside Tuesday, 19 August as a special focus day. Several science based activities were organised by teachers and saw children enjoying each hands on experiment. The day commenced with the construction of a giant ice block pyramid. This was watched carefully by the children and predictions were made on how long it would take for the ice to melt. The activities that followed ranged from the study of chemical composition to produce lava lamps, experiments with flight, windmills and electricity, the wonders of microscopes, the properties of water and the planting out of our vegetable garden. In this we were assisted by our local Bunning’s branch who supplied the plants,
compost and expertise.
At the end of the day the school had succeeded in raising the profile of science and providing opportunities for children to
develop the skills to think scientifically.
Our thanks to all staff who collaborated to ensure our children
were filled with wonderment and awe at the end of the day.
Thanks also to all parents who remembered to bring in their ice
block to ensure we built a substantial pyramid.
LAPATHONLAPATHON
Once again sincere thanks to all parents and friends who attended our Lapathon and of course helped as stampers and ran or walked with their children. The general consensus at the end of the run was that it was fun and of course fitness building. It is now time to send in your pledges. Parents and supporters are asked to send in their money by Friday, 29
August which is being donated to our sister school in Bali.

DATES TO REMEMBER
SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT DSCHOOL DEVELOPMENT DAYSAYS
I have had a few enquiries regarding these days - the need for
them and advance notice given to parents.
The School Development Days are allocated by the Department of Education to ensure that schools both forward plan and provide professional learning for staff. The selection of four of the allocated days is something that the school decides along with the School Council. This year there were seven days allocated for this purpose. Two of these days were before the school year commenced and one day after the school year ends. The remaining four days were selected as above. These days were advertised last year and were written into the school prospectus distributed in December to new students for this year. Further advertising of these days have been through this Informer and
the school calendar.
Next year there are six School Development Days. Of these
days, three are flexible and will be determined through
consultation with the School Council.
CAMP MONEYCAMP MONEY
This year our Year 6 children are going on their annual camp to
Fairbridge Village from Tuesday, 14 to Friday, 17 October. The
camp fee has been set at $ 331.00. To hold a place, parents
have already paid a deposit of $ 50.00. Parents are reminded
that this money needs to be brought in before Thursday 25
September. We do have EFTPOS facilities to make things
easier.
SCHOOL EXCURSIONS ANSCHOOL EXCURSIONS AND INCURSIONSD INCURSIONS
As part of our school learning program excursions and incursions
are organised through the year. Most of these are paid events.
Knowledge and experience gained from these inclusions are vital
and integrated into other aspects of the curriculum. As such you
are encouraged to pay the required fee to ensure that your child
does not miss out on this important adjunct to their education.
Just a reminder to all parents that an alternative program is
provided if your child is not part of these.
YEAR 4YEAR 4--6 EXCURSION 6 EXCURSION -- ST JOHN YOUTH CHALLST JOHN YOUTH CHALLENGEENGE
On Thursday our Year 4 – 6 children were invited to attend the St
John Youth challenge at the Perth convention centre. This was a
free excursion designed to educate our children in the skills of
first aid, to learn more about Emergency Services and to develop
an understanding of personal safety at home, at school and in
the community. At the end of the day each child received a free
first aid kit. Our thanks to Mr Marchant for organising this
excursion and to all staff for their support.
WAKAKIRRIWAKAKIRRI
Congratulations and well done to our Aveley children who
presented their item at the Regal Theatre. We were proud of
them on the night and overjoyed to hear that we have been
selected for the finals on Tuesday, 23 September. Tickets for this
final night were limited because of the anticipated increased
numbers on the night. Thanks to all parents and friends who
have purchased tickets.
Wise words for the fortnight……

or present are certain to miss the future .” [John F. Kennedy]

INTERM SWIMMINGINTERM SWIMMING
In week 7 and 8 our Pre Primary to Year 6 children will be taking part in the their swimming lessons at Altone Park Leisure Centre. We look forward to the high participant numbers we have experienced in the past. There have been a couple of slight changes this year, the main one being that fact that their will be six lessons each day. One advantage of this is that overall group numbers will be smaller as we take less students to each sessions. However, it does mean that the children in the final group will not return to school until 2:50PM, this includes Wednesdays. This means that on the two Wednesdays during
swimming they will be late back to school.
Swimming is an essential life skill and all children are
encouraged to take part as one day it could save their lives.

ARE YOU AND YOUR CHIARE YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN CYBERSMART?LDREN CYBERSMART?
I think some of the difficult decisions for us as parents of today have to make includes having to consider how much access to technology should be given to our children and how do we protect them from cyber predators, bullying and ensure that they protect their privacy. If you want answers to these questions, I would like to direct you to explore the Cyber Smart website developed by the Australian Government through the Australian Communications and Media Authority, to educate children, parents and teachers about online safety through the provision of web based and face to face events. The website is: http://www.cybersmart.gov.au and provides free tools, strategies and resources to help make online experiences safe and positive. There are a range of one hour presentations specifically created
for parents which covers:
Internet Safety Awareness Presentations
Technology risks and what’s trending
Protecting identity and reputation
Cyberbullying
Gaming
Cybersmart resources
Interactive ‘Chatterbox’ conversations for parents
