D. Study Questions: (Answer fully using specific details when applicable)

1. Why was Andrew Jackson such a personally powerful embodiment of the new mass democracy in the 1820s and 1830s?

2. Why did Calhoun and the South see the Tariff of 1828 as such an “abomination” and raise threats of nullification over it?

3. What were the policies and events that led to the “Trail of Tears” Indian removal of 1837? 4. Describe Jackson’s “Bank War” and how did the modern mass political machine factor into the

discussion. 5. Describe the Panic of 1837 and its causes. 6. How do the Panic of 1837 and other economic failures reflect the weaknesses of Jackson’s

economic and fiscal policies? 7. Characterize Andrew Jackson as president. Does he fit in with other presidential greats or not?

Explain why. 8. Andrew Jackson was a southerner and a large slave holder, yet he nearly lead the US Army to

invade and crush South Carolina when that state attempted to nullify and resist federal law.

Why? 9. Was the “Texas Revolution” against Mexico more about the expansion of American slavery into

the West, or was it about the rights of settlers in Mexico? Explain. 10. Compare and contrast the two new democratic parties, the Democrats and the Whigs.
