Honoring our Franciscan Tradition

From the Pastor’s DeskThe Gospel passage we read today is the last teaching recounted in St. Mark’s Gospel about the ordinary life of discipleship. After this, St. Mark’s focus switches to recounting the Passion of Christ and the Central Saving Mysteries of our Faith. The two teachings contained in the gospel concerning the ostentatious scribes and the impoverished widow were probably unrelated. They are joined here because of the word “widow,” which appears in both. Although at first glance these passages appear disparate, they converge in that each asserts that Faith is essentially a Matter of the Heart. There are undoubtedly people who like to parade their beliefs and receive recognition. For others there is nothing in play except the love of God. Both the widow mentioned in the First Reading and the widow in the Gospel story display generosity and real religious spirit. The position of widows in the ancient world was particularly precarious. If they had young children, they were dependent on the generosity of their families and society in general.

The poor widow in the Gospel exemplifies what Jesus would do himself -- give everything as an offering to God. Jesus hopes that his own disciples will take their cue from the poor widow who provides an example of true piety; not from the scribes hungry for status and honor. He hopes that we, his followers, will be equally generous with our own resources. These resources are not always measured in money. We are called on to give of our time, our talent and our under-standing. We are asked to give not just from our monetary resources, but to give abundantly from our Gifts and Talents. Like the widow, we might feel that we have nothing more to give; but it is that kind of giving that counts with the Lord. This gospel is particularly apposite for us at this time, as we focus on own annual Parish Covenant of Sharing.

The Gospels continually challenge us to be generous with our love, our forgiveness, our patience, our resources. St. Francis Parish Community have always responded with great charity to the Christian call to service, particularly in service to the poor, the marginalized and the vulnerable. Our prayer should be for the grace to continue to respond with generosity and love.

Peace and Every Good in the tradition of St.Francisand St.Clare. Fr. Des.

The holidays are quickly approaching and we will start to see more of these phishing emails to try and trick the recipient into sending currency or something of value. Prayer Requests

Peace Prayer Of St. Francis Weekly ReadingsLord, make me an instrument of your peace;where there is hatred, let me sow love;where there is injury, pardon;where there is doubt, faith;where there is despair, hope;where there is darkness, light;and where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master,grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;to be understood, as to understand;to be loved, as to love;for it is in giving that we receive,it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

Covenant of Sharing 2018: Each of us are calledj Online Giving? k A 10% increase in giving? l A one time gift?

Pray and give generously! Help us reach our $30,000 Goal!

As followers of Jesus in the tradition of St. Francis, we share in a responsibility to

be stewards of the Church, to see that Jesus’ mis-sion, which has been entrusted to us, not only continues - but thrives and grows. It is our job as parishioners to do what we can to continue to make our parish a true community of faith and a vibrant source of service to the wider commu-nity.

On the weekend of November 17/18, each of us will be invited to make or renew a finan-

cial commitment as part of our Covenant of Shar-ing, to increase our giving as we are able, and to sign up for Online Giving. We will also have the opportunity to make a one-time donation.

our Covenant of sharing Calls us to sacrifice

Did you know that the word sacrifice literally means “make holy?” It comes from two Latin words: sacer or sacred, and facere or to make. When we sacrifice a part of our income to God, we literally “make it holy.”

Phew! the ads of midtermcandidates sniping at each other are over...Did you hear any of these ads focusing on improving food distribution to the hungry in our society? Did you find any ads mentioningnew resources for the homeless?.... No.

We are having a

“cr is is of values” as Pope Francis calls it.

In discussing this crisis of values, Pope Francis repeats his call for Catholics to seek out people on the fringes of society, like the widow in the Gospel story this Sunday, who need help the most. Are you called to action when you hear about starving people needing food, or home-less people needing shelter? What can you do?‘If we step outside of ourselves, we will find poverty ... today, and it breaks my heart to say it, finding a home-less person who has died of cold, is not news. Today, the news is scandals, that is news, but the many children who don’t have food--that’s not news. This is grave. We can’t rest easy while things are this way. ... We cannot become starched Christians, too polite, who speak of theology calmly over tea. ... We have to become courageous Chris-tians and seek out those (who need help most).’

32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Francis of Assisi Parish

November 10/11, 2018

We adore you Most Holy Lord Jesus Christ, here and in all your churches in the world, And we bless you, because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. Amen.

Gathering Gather Us In Marty Haugen

Here in this place new light is streaming, now is the darkness vanished away, See in this space our fears and our dreamings, brought here to you in the light of this day.

Gather us in the lost and forsaken, gather us in the blind and the lame; Call to us now, and we shall awaken, we shall arise at the sound of our name.

We are the young our lives are a myst'ry, we are the old who yearn for your face,

We have been sung throughout all of hist'ry, called to be light to the whole human race. Gather us in the rich and the haughty, gather us in the proud and the strong; Give us a heart so meek and so lowly, Give us the courage to enter the song.

Here we will take the wine and the water, here we will take the bread of new birth,

Here you shall call your sons and your daughters, call us anew to be salt for the earth. Give us to drink the wine of compassion, give us to eat the bread that is you;

Nourish us well, and teach us to fashion lives that are holy and hearts that are true. Copyright ©1982, GIA Publicaons, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Reprinted with permission under ONE LICENSE #A-706617. All rights reserved.

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Ponus Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead;

he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the

communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrecon of the body, and life everlasng. AMEN+ Preparation of Gifts: Whatsoever You Do Willard F. Jabusch

The bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world, and if you eat of this bread, you shall live forever, you shall live forever. (Refrain)

Unless you eat of the flesh of the Son of Man

and drink of his blood, and drink of his blood, you shall not have life within you. (Refrain)
