AN APPEAL FROM THE HART On behalf of HART, we cannot thank you enough for your continuing generosity. Without supporters like you we could not continue to offer refuge to the countless animals in need of shelter and care. Some Statistics HART began 2016 with 60 cats on board. By the end of July, 108 more cats and kittens had been taken in; during that time 87 lucky felines went to permanent homes with caring people like you. Currently, we have 44 kittens in residence with 12 of those reserved for adoption. As Admissions Rise So Do Costs Historically, we have admitted an average of 70 cats and kittens per year, but over the past few years the number has risen to 140-150 annually. As the upswing continues, costs also rise. Nonetheless, we remain a no- refuse, no-kill shelter, and are grateful for the impressive work done by the Adoption Committee in increasing the number of adoptions. Each cat adopted makes room for more. The average cost to admit an adult cat* or kitten is $40 and $90, respectively, for an examination and basic vet care. Presently, at the height of kitten season, a disproportionate increase in the number of kittens taken in has created added budgetary stress. We waive our relinquishment fee ($75), as needed, and thank those of you who generously give more. * If already spayed/neutered, as are 90% of the adult cats we receive HART Counts On Your Ongoing Help DID YOU KNOW that last year it cost over $150,000 to meet all of HART’s expenses? At present, we are midway between both of our major fundraising events, and are at the peak of our monetary demands. That is why, once again, we are reaching out to you for support. A Musical Feline Family

What do you call a cat that comes from the town of Harmony? Why, Melody, of course. And what do you name her five kittens? How about Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So? And so it happened for the five kittens recently relinquished to HART, along with their mother, Melody.

The backstory: Surprised when an obviously pregnant, unknown cat followed one of their cats into the house, a Harmony family soon concluded that the nameless stranger had been abandoned, an all-too-often occurrence in outlying areas of the county.

The family described the refugee, whom they dubbed Melody, as friendly with both people and ranch animals, including dogs, and more notably, chickens. After Melody’s kittens were born and later out and about, the family decided that a ranch was not the safest place for a wandering litter of curious kittens, and with humane forethought brought them to HART, where the kittens were immediately christened: Do, Re, Mi, Fa, and So, to the delight of many.

Melody, an all-black cat, bore five tuxedo-marked kittens, four males and one female. All are good-natured, and while Do, Re, Mi, and their mom, are still available for adoption, Fa and So are happily settling into their new homes.Rumor has it that an upbeat tune, “Melody’s Song,” is now in the works, with lyrics to include the terms “unconditional love,” “limitless pets,” “food on demand,” and “deferential staff.” While the rumor is unconfirmed, the sentiment is exactly what HART desires for all its adopted cats, musical or not.
