    Homecraft Chairperson’s Message

On behalf of the Homecraft Division, I would like to take this opportunity to warmly welcome everyone to the 166th Barrie Fair presented by the Essa & District Agricultural Society. This is my fourth year chairing the Homecraft Division of the Barrie Fair, and it is such a privilege and honour to partake in this wonderful opportunity once again. In addition, the Homecraft committee have spent many hours working diligently to create a little something for everyone who wishes to display their exhibits. I would like to thank my Homecraft committee for all their hard work and dedication before, during and after the fair, it is greatly appreciated.

The Homecraft Division has always been an important part of our fair’s history during the last 166 years of the Barrie Fair, and the amount of interest in the Homecraft Division is continuously growing. The sponsorship alone shows that the community truly supports the Homecraft Division, and sees the bright future ahead for this wonderful part of the Barrie Fair. Additionally, the committee believes that we are continuously growing with regards to the number of exhibitors and entries each and every year. It is your contribution that makes the Homecraft Division of the Barrie Fair, a huge success! The 2019 Homecraft Division theme is “We Have a Good Thing Growing” and the OAAS poster competitions for the Junior Division is to embrace this theme. There are many different OAAS competitions in the Homecraft book that we would love for our exhibitors to participate in this year, so the Barrie Fair can bring the winning entries to the District 5 Competition. At the District 5 Competition last fall, the Barrie Fair was able to enter five items in their competitions.

If you are a new exhibitor in the Homecraft Division this year, please indicate/write “New Exhibitor” on your entry tag by your name, where it is not visible for the judge to see, and the Junior and Senior exhibitor with the most prize money (in cash or value) in each department will receive a Rosette ribbon. Just a little something to say thank you for participating and exhibiting your items at our fair.

Last year the Homecraft Division started a new tradition by having a Homecraft Awards Ceremony recognizing Junior, Senior, and Special Needs winners at the Barrie Fair’s Opening Ceremony, which was well received by the exhibitors and the general public.

Thank you to all the new committee members that joined the Homecraft Division this year, your contribution is greatly appreciated! We are always looking for new committee members to help in the Homecraft Division, please let me know if you are interested in volunteering either by phone or email.

We are also continuously looking for sponsors to sponsor different classes within the Homecraft Division, please let me know if you are interested in sponsoring either by phone or email.

If you or someone you know is interested in demonstrating any form of art or craft techniques, quilting, flower arranging, painting, etc. to the general public, please let me know either by phone or email. We are trying to encourage local businesses to promote and demonstrate their gifts and talents.

Please select the categories that best fit you and your creativity. Review the rules and regulations in each department as well as the General Rules and Junior Division Rules.

In closing, please send, drop off, fax or email your registration forms to the Fair Office before Tuesday, August 13th, 2019. The phone number to the Fair Office is (705) 726-1200 and the website is www.essaagriplex.ca. The preferred method of entry is through Assist Expo http://www.assistexpo.ca/essa-agriplex.

Enjoy the 166th edition of the Barrie Fair for all it offers. Sincerely,

Emily Kistler (705) 458-9404, [email protected]

Message from the Board of Directors

You are the difference. The new millennium has brought a tidal wave of change to our lives. Past traditions are challenged by our modern connections to the world. This rush of data has forced institutions, including fairs and volunteer groups, to scramble to maintain support from the local community and participants. Fairs across the continent struggle to make ends meet with fewer sponsors, a smaller population of farmers to fill livestock classes, and less volunteers to get jobs done. That is why this year, as every year, you make the difference in continuing the traditions of the 166th annual Barrie Fair. As an exhibitor, you maintain the traditions of striving for excellence and preserving the skills to get your jobs done. As a participant, you tell us what traditions make the Fair something you look forward to being a part of. As a volunteer, you help carry the burden of making sure the gates will open and help connect our urban communities to their agricultural roots. And we thank you for this! As the traditions and offerings of the Barrie Fair evolve for the next 100 years, we look to you for the insights and support to make it work. We look forward to welcoming you in 2019, and always appreciate your comments: electronically, by phone, or best of all, in person! Sincerely, The Essa & District Agricultural Society Board of Directors

    The 2018-2019 Barrie Fair Ambassadors

Becoming a Fair Ambassador is a task that requires organization, responsibility, and initiative. Being a Fair Ambassador, however, requires so much more: offering a friendly conversation to anyone you see, being a resource to others, volunteering your time to greater things, and dedicating yourself to the community. Over the past year, this experience has truly effected me for the better and inspired me to reach high goals. The Barrie Fair Ambassador is not only a title but also a promise to be a friend to the community. In turn, the community gives back in the form of smiles, gratitude, and appreciation. Overall, becoming the Barrie Fair Ambassador is a wonderful experience and a great way to get involved!

    Senior Ambassador- Kezia McConnell

I am Tara Handy the Junior Ambassador for the Essa and District Agricultural Society and the Barrie Fair. I would like to say thank you to the board of directors for letting me represent them this past year. The past 12 months have re-enforced my beliefs in how important this wonderful Barrie Fair is to both the community and the 165 years of fair traditions.

The honour of being the Junior Ambassador and representative for the Barrie Fair feels wonderful. To stay true to my competition speech, and to pick my favorite part of this past year’s fair, I would have to say was the ability to walk around the entire fair weekend as a fair ambassador and talk to everyone about agriculture and about the fair that I have been coming to since…. “well, since as far back as I can remember.”

My experiences this past year have given me a future goal of striving to become the senior ambassador when I am old enough. I encourage every young boy and girl to take advantage of this ambassador opportunity and participate in this program or one
