Ethics 2020 It is my pleasure to welcome back our Primary Ethics volunteers for 2020 at Warners Bay Public School. Ethics classes are

available as an option in NSW public primary schools during the Special Religious Education/Special Education in Ethics (SRE/

SEE or ‘scripture’) timeslot. Primary Ethics is the charity authorised by the Department of Education to create curriculum and

train volunteers to deliver ethics classes. The ethics curriculum is available for children from Kindergarten through to year 6.

These classes aim to help children develop the skills of critical thinking and to view ethical issues from different angles. They

are encouraged to carefully listen to what others have to say, respectfully disagree with others if their opinion differs, and to

build on other student’s ideas.

We have our trained volunteers currently teaching Year 1, 2, 3, and 4 students, and a further two volunteers going through

the ethics training course. Kinder and a year 5/6 class will be able to begin once that training is complete. If you are interested

in enrolling your child in ethics classes, please contact the school office. We have students on wait lists for Ethics classes at

most year levels. This means that some children enrolled are still not receiving ethics classes as there are not enough volun-

teer teachers. Children wishing to join a group where there are no spaces available, will be added to a waiting list through the

school’s front office. Currently classes run once a month at 2-2:55pm on Wednesdays. If you think you have the time to help

bring this fabulous program to the school, we are always looking for more volunteers.

Ethics classes can be taught by parents, carers, grandparents or members of the community. If you would like to consider vol-

unteering for Ethics or know someone interested please contact our Ethics Coordinator Phoebe Jennings

([email protected]) or visit the Primary Ethics website for more information (https://primaryethics.com.au/)

As always, thank you to our amazing volunteer Ethics teachers!

Low Waste Wednesdays Warners Bay Public School is holding low waste lunch days each Wednesday

We are encouraging all families to participate in low waste lunch days by bringing a packed lunch to school that has no packag-

ing or waste. Ideas for a low waste lunch include:

Reusable lunch boxes and containers

Reusable drink bottles

Appropriate portion size

Please try to avoid:

X Foods that are pre-packed as individual serves such as chips, muesli bars and squeeze yogurts

X Cling wrap, foil or snap lock bags

X Poppers or juice cartons

Packing a low waste lunch can save money. Here are a few tips to get you started:

• Ensure you have lunch boxes that have different compartments and tight fitting containers for sandwiches and

items that would traditionally use foil or cling wrap.

• Preparation is important. Plan and prepare in advance and store in the refrigerator overnight. Involve the chil-

dren and only pack what they will eat.

• Use leftovers from previous night.

• Buy or make your child’s favourite snack foods in bulk or larger packets and portion into individual containers

for example;

• chips, biscuits or crackers

• fruits and yogurt

• whole cake, slices, (stored in the freezer)

• dried fruits e.g. sultanas and dates

• cheese – cut into blocks

• Buy 1-2 litre bottles of drink and pour into reusable drink bottles.

• Take note of what is not being eaten.

To help promote this initiative, students from the Green Team will be rewarding students with Low Waste Lunches.

If you have any enquires please contact Mrs Dechnicz through the school office.

Thank you for supporting your child’s participation in reducing our school’s waste.

Mrs Dechnicz & The Green Team

Sports Update Congratulations to our amazing Zone Swimmers who competed proudly for our school over the 2 day carnival at Charlestown

Pool. We wish Cameron W and Liam B all the best as they head to Regional Swimming on Tuesday to compete at Lambton

Pool. Well done also to our Basketball trials representatives and congratulations to Marli G for being selected to trial at the

Hunter trials on 10th March.

We have a busy week of trials coming up and wish our Netballers and Soccer players all the best in their zone trials this week. We had a hugely successful min-carnival last Wednesday with huge levels of participation and points gained for every house!

Results from the house points score and the competitive Swimming Carnival will be announced at this weeks Primary assembly

at 10:15am on Wednesday in the school hall.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) at Warners Bay Public School

Acknowledging Expected Behaviours

Free and Frequents – ‘Gotchas’

Students who demonstrate the school expectations of being a Safe, Respectful, Active Learner, both

inside and outside the classroom are acknowledged with a ‘Gotcha’.

Each ‘Gotcha’ will align with one of the school expectations. The students fill it out with their name,

class and tick off which expected behaviour they demonstrated, and it goes into their Stage bucket (Kindy – Early Stage 1,

Year 1 & 2 – Stage 1, Year 3 & 4 – Stage 2, Year 5 & 6 – Stage 3).

Acknowledgements should be provided as feedback to reinforce appropriate behaviour, as we would expect in academic re-

quirements. All students have equal access to ‘Gotcha’ acknowledgments and this should provide an explicit teaching oppor-

tunity for staff and students at the time.

Merit Certificates and Millsy Certificates

Students can receive PBL merit certificates from all staff at WBPS. Students will receive their merit certificate

at either Infants/Primary assemblies (Weeks 3, 6 and 9, each term), relating to our Safe, Respectful and Ac-

tive Learner expectations. Students need to keep their certificates safe and when they have received 3 PBL

merit certificates, in a calendar year, they can bring in their certificates to their class teacher and receive a

BRONZE ‘Millsy’ award at the next assembly. When students receive 2 more PBL merit certificates

(equalling 5 in total) in a calendar year they will receive a SILVER ‘Millsy’ award and 2 more PBL merit certifi-

cates (equalling 7 in total) in a calendar year they will receive a GOLD ‘Millsy’ award and a PBL badge.

This system will begin every calendar year.

Thursday 5th March is Out of Uniform Day—Bring a Chocolate Once again, Year 6 are asking K-6 students to join in our annual out of uniform

day to help us with fundraising for the Year 6 Mini-fete. The Year 6 mini-fete

will be held on the last day of Term 1 (Thursday 9th April).

This Thursday 5th March, students are allowed to come to school in ‘out of

uniform’ clothes. Remember - no shoulders or tummies exposed, and enclosed

shoes and your school hat must be worn – (as we must always remember to be

sun-safe at WBPS.)

Instead of paying a gold coin as your fine for being out of uniform…Year 6 are asking you to bring in a chocolate. All choco-

lates will then be used as prizes at our ‘world famous’ Lob –a – Choc stall at the mini-fete.

Please help Year 6 by bringing along a chocolate and we will ensure you have lots of fun winning those scrumptious choco-

lates back at the mini-fete on Thursday 9th April.

Watch out for our Mini-fete newsletter which will be coming home later this week. It will outline all the exciting stalls you

can visit and the ways you can help us with donations for our upcoming mini-fete.

A big thank you from Year 6

Student Representative Council The K-2 Student Representative Council has started for 2020. Two students from each class in Kindergarten, Year 1 and

Year 2 were selected by their peers to be class leaders for Term 1. These leaders meet each Wednesday at lunchtime for a

picnic and discuss student matters and special projects. Students were also presented with SRC Leader badges in front of

their class last week.

This term, leaders have been learning how to share their ideas with the group and teachers have then been supporting the

students to consult their peers about certain issues. For example, our first project has been to decide on how our Home

Reading Raffle Bookplates will be created for the year. SRC leaders gathered ideas from their peers, shared with the SRC

and then voted on ideas they thought would work well.

Our first combined decision was to have the bookplates designed by the class who is running the K-2 assembly where the

books are presented. Congratulations to the leaders for gathering ideas from peers and representing their class in such a

mature way.

Thank you Thank you Phoebe and Shari for donating Library Bags to our school.

Miss Walters, Ms Wakely and Mrs Freund are very appreciative.

Office Reminder We are still chasing a number of orange notes (Emergency Contact Update). This is in addition to the Emergency Contact

Detail Report which went home last week (on white paper). The orange form is only used in extraordinary circumstances

in the instance of an off-site evacuation or other situation where we may need permission for your child to be collected by

another parent/friend or neighbour.

Please also return an medical forms you may have outstanding so that we have up-to-date information on your child. This

may be an updated Asthma Plan, a Health Care Plan, an NDIS parent consent form or other relevant information on the

wellbeing of your child.

If you haven’t already done so, please download our Skoolbag app. The Skoolbag app is used frequently to communicate to

parents and carers about things that are happening in our school and is also used for important last minute reminders. If

you are unsure how to access the app, please contact the office.

Statement of Accounts are coming home with students this week. If you are having difficulty paying your account, please

contact the office with regards to a payment plan.

National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence – Friday March 20th – Week 8

At Warners Bay PS, we are always working to teach our students about the negative impacts of bullying and violent actions

shown towards others. Each year we spend a special week long focus on learning about this issue in our schools and commu-

nities. Every class covers age appropriate lessons targeted directly at developing an understanding of the issues and impacts

relating to bullying and violence.

Teachers will be distributing colourful wrist bands that the school purchased that say – Bullying – NO WAY! Take a stand

together!

Remember:

At WBPS we celebrate that we are all different and this is what makes our school and world so special and unique;

People who bully usually have poor self-image and lack genuine confidence. Therefore, they can only make them-

selves feel better by being unkind or trying to gain power over others;

It is important to step up/ speak up when we see someone being unkind; otherwise our inaction tells the bully that

it is okay to keep on acting in the same way… and;

At Warners Bay we may all be different fish but in our school we all swim together!

Together we can work on eliminating bullying and violent actions in our schools and communities.
