1 Home schooling activities The school has planned an education support plan if the school needs to be closed. Whilst we hope that this will not happen, we need to be prepared and realistic around this possibility. As both children and teachers may be stuck at home over this period all teachers have planned a range of learning and fun activities to keep them on a learning journey. Take note that this is not a holiday but a different learning opportunity. We hope that the suggestions below will help families and children to manage their time away from school. A timetable has been suggested but it is up to every household to plan their day as suitable for their circumstances. A basic timetable could look something like: 9am-10am Maths (worksheets, or studyladder) 10am Fitness challenge or break 11am-12pm Reading, writing or art project 12pm Lunch and play 2pm Building challenge outside or science experiment 4pm Skype or Zoom playdate with friends – check in and say hi to find out what they have been up to. Each classroom teacher will update their blog on our website: www.st-joseph.school.nz and keep in touch with their students. Below there is a list of different websites for different subjects at different levels. You can give you child a variety to do each day. Room 9: Reading

Several reading books at your child’s level will be sent home.

Work on reading one to two books each day.

If you have books at home, read a story to your child each day.

More fluent readers can also read their own books at home.

Sight words- A list of sight words at your child’s level will be provided.

Instructions are given on the sheet. Practise reading these words each day.

Writing

Practise writing a new letter each day using correct formation.

Ask your child to write a story each day. Most children will require help with ‘sounding out’ and

spelling words.

Alphabet- letter names and sounds- if your child does not know all these, practise each day.

Ask them to find things in the house that begin with a letter. E.g ‘b’ – bath, broom, book…

Maths

Practise writing numbers correctly. Count to 20 or to 100.

Simple addition and subtraction using objects in the home.

e.g 5 teddybears and 2 dolls makes 7, I have 4 toy cars. I gave 2 cars to my brother. I have 2 cars

left.

Religious Education

If you have a children’s bible at home, read a story from this each day and talk about what

happened.

Inquiry/ topic- SUSTAINABILITY

Think of ways to re-use or re-purpose things that you were going to throw out.

e.g using boxes to make a robot or a doll’s house.

Room 6: Maths: Please go on https://www.studyladder.co.nz/ using your login and choose one math’s activity each week-day (I will be able to check this activity online). Learn skip counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. Then 3’s & 4’s and more times tables. BE A MULTIPLICATION EXPERT!!! Ask a family member for help to test you.

Writing: Please go on https://www.studyladder.co.nz/ using your login and choose one writing activity each week-day (I will be able to check this activity online). Write daily in your Aranui diary. Find something in your day that you want to learn more about. Do a little research and write three sentences about your learning. Make sure you check your punctuation and capitals. Don’t worry too much about your spelling, just give tricky words a go (underline the words you think you spelt wrong).

Reading: Read your Duffy/or borrowed books and write a book review (of at least one book each week). Find meanings of 3 unfamiliar words each week and write their definitions in a GLOSSARY at the back of your diary. Either do a book review, or a character description. A successful book review includes a short summary of the book & a background sentence about the topic. Assume that your audience has not read the book and address the book's main topics and ideas and explain why they matter to you. You could even do this as a cartoon summary of your book.

Religious Education: Take a look at bible stories either from your bible at home or online about Jesus from Matthew/ Mark/ Luke/ John scriptures. Write a summary of one story a week or draw a picture that depicts an important scene. Write about what Jesus is trying to teach us.

Science: Please go on https://www.studyladder.co.nz/ using your login and choose one science activity per week. Develop a booklet about one animal affected by plastic pollution and show how being more sustainable at school and at home might change how these animals and their environment are affected. You could use drawings and captions to show your ideas.

Art: Fold a piece of paper to create a bookmark. Make patterns on your book mark to show your identity/persona; include your name, your initials and your ‘pattern’. Use your bookmark when reading your books.

Teacher: Dr Girardet
