School Policies Please visit the school website to get your copy of the policy handbook, the student handbook and other posted policies. The link
is http://crescentcollegiate1.weebly.com/policies.html . Allergies A number of students and staff have allergies to the following items: fish, peanuts, nuts, raw egg, latex and scented items. Please refrain from bringing any of the listed items, or from wearing scented perfumes, colognes, and body sprays. The most life threatening scents are of the “fashion“ scents such as Axe, Gillette etc. These products have very strong scents and chemicals that result in Epipen use and emergency trips to the clinic. As a result, Crescent Collegiate is a scent free building. Please ensure your child is not wearing perfumes, colognes, strong body washes, or butters/creams. Medical Conditions If your child is new to the Crescent and has a medical condition, or has developed a condition that we need to be aware of, please notify us by telephone or email. Prompt knowledge about the medical conditions will help us put measures in place to ensure his/her health and safety. Textbooks Textbooks are provided, free of charge, as part of the lending program. Please note, that students will NOT receive textbooks for the current year if they have not returned ALL of their textbooks from last year’s loan program. Students with outstanding books should either bring back the text (to the library) to be scanned from their account, or pay for the outstanding texts. Only then can new textbooks be issue. If you have any concerns regarding this, please contact the administration.
Quotes Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.
~Mark Twain
Have you ever been at sea in a dense fog, when it seemed as if a tangible white darkness shut you in and the great ship, tense and anxious, groped her way toward the shore with plummet and sounding-line, and you waited with beating heart for something to happen? I was like that ship before my education began, only I was without compass or sounding line, and no way of knowing how near the harbor was. “Light! Give me light!” was the wordless cry of my soul, and the light of love shone on me in that very hour.
~ Helen Keller
You can teach a student a lesson for a day; but if you can teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives. ~ Clay P. Bedford

We would like to thank them for their time over the last year. The Breakfast Program volunteers are responsible for making this program such a huge success. New volunteers are welcomed. If you would like to be part of our program contact the school and ask to speak with a Breakfast Program Rep. On October 18th we will be having our Walk to Breakfast. All parents are invited to participate. We will be leaving the school at 9:00 AM and walking west to Ultramar. After the walk we will return to the school for a nutritious snack. The Walk to Breakfast is a Kids Eat Smart initiative aimed at helping schools raise money to support their breakfast program. The Kids Eat Smart Foundation will match all monies raised. Please encourage your child to take a sponsor sheet and support our program. School Council

Eastern School District’s New Student Data Base ESD has implemented a new database system called POWERSCHOOL. This is a web-‐based system that organizes all student data for all stakeholders – province, district, schools and families. By November, parents will be provided with login access to the parent portal where you can get real time information on items such as grades and attendance. More information will be available soon. Crescent Music Program Junior Concert Band: There will be a meeting for parents of grade 7 junior band students immediately following curriculum night in the music room. Parents of students who wish for their children to be involved in the junior band program are asked to attend this meeting.
Crescent Collegiate would like to welcome Ms. Leanna Reid to our music program. Ms. Reid is a graduate of Crescent Collegiate and will be completing her music internship with Mr. Colbourne this fall. We look forward to working with her this year!
Vocal Ensemble has been chosen to perform for the grand opening of Ronald McDonald House in St. John's on September 27th. This is a huge honor for our school to be invited to such a prestigious event. Look for our choir on the
evening news on CBC and NTV on September 27th.
Fiddle Group: Any students interested in learning how to play the fiddle are encouraged to sign up on the sheet outside the music room. This is a first for Crescent Collegiate and we are excited to add this genre of music to our already thriving music program.

Constructed Response Using D.E.E.R. Acronym Please encourage your child to use the acronym D.E.E.R. when completing constructed response questions. Please read the following for further information. A permanent link is also located on the school website. What is a Constructed Response? A constructed response is a type of open-‐ended essay question that demonstrates cognitive knowledge and reasoning. The answer must be provided using information that can be found in a particular text or other prompt (map, picture, graphic organizer, etc.) and is not meant to demonstrate opinion, but to show how you are able to extract information and use this as the basis for forming a complete answer To understand and answer the constructed response question, the easiest way is to memorize the acronym, “DEER”. This stands for define term & state a topic sentence from the question, give an example from the text, explain the example, and refer back to the question (conclusion). D – define term and state a topic sentence from the question E – give example(s) from the text E -‐ explain the example(s) R – refer back to the question Define term and state a topic sentence from the question This means that you define any terms that need to be addressed in your response. Also, you need to begin with a topic sentence. A topic sentence is a sentence that expresses the main idea of a paragraph. Give example(s) from the text As the constructed response question is meant to show how well you comprehend and are able to draw inferences from the prompt, it is essential that you give examples from the text to show how well it supports your answer. Explain the example(s) In addition to the evidence you have cited from the text, you will need to supply your own reasoning for why you think your answer is correct. After stating your example you would explain it fully. (the EE is repeated when the question asks for two references). Refer back to the question Refer back to what the question asked to conclude your constructed response.
