Annual Report2014

Technology lives here

home of Tech Titans

“Technology lives here.” We use that phrase a lot at the Metroplex Technology Business Council, because it’s true. Technology does live here in North Texas with one of the largest concentrated areas in the country for technology companies. Yet, that barely scratches the surface of what this phrase really means to our organization.

Technology lives here, because the MTBC is such a powerful influence for the high-tech industry. Our members and staff work diligently to establish the North Texas region as the premier hub of world-class tech innovation…an area where technology can thrive. We strengthen the technology community by growing future tech leaders, promoting our region to technology companies in other cities and states, advocating technology’s advancement in governmental arenas, connecting people and inspiring ideas.

In 2014, we made some changes to strengthen our organization, which in turn makes the local technology community stronger. The MTBC opened membership to a more diverse network of technology users and adopters. We also created new special interest forums to accommodate growing technology trends. As part of our workforce development and talent initiative, we completed the first phase of STEMfire – a website designed to connect STEM educators with technology professionals. We are very proud of this project, which was many years in the works.

I invite you to continue reading about these and other achievements made by the MTBC in 2014. As the chairman of the board, it has been my absolute pleasure to serve this organization. The level of commitment alone from our staff and volunteers is astounding and is a significant reason why the MTBC continues to champion and serve the technology community across North Texas.

You make the difference. That helps us make a difference. Thank for your continued support.

The North Texas Technology Hiring Expo, presented by MTBC’s HR special interest group, connected technology companies in the Dallas area to nearly 200 qualified job applicants seeking employment. The expo hosted 30 exhibitors who were hiring for about 200 tech positions.

Membership open to all passionate about technology

The annual MTBC Golf Tournament attracts business executives from technology companies across the Metro-plex. A day spent on the links is just another way the MTBC helps people connect!

Partnerships, like the one MTBC has with the Telecom-munications Industry Association (TIA), lead to forward thinking events like the CIO Forum featuring CIOs from Fujitsu, Texas Instruments and NCH.

In the past, only 20 percent of the membership could be a company that did not have propriety technology. However, with the proliferation of technology, opportunities abound to grow and strengthen the tech community in North Texas. Thus, any company or individual can join the MTBC, as long as they agree with the MTBC’s mission. Companies may be implementers of technology.

“Technology has permeated businesses from retailers dealing with cyber security risks to medical device firms developing robots to perform heart surgery,” said MTBC Chairman Kent Novak. “We believe the MTBC should be a place they can call home.”

The MTBC encourages those in any tech segment to find an area of activity in which to reach customers, suppliers, part-ners and employees. New special interest forums are forming to increase the number of opportunities for engagement. Watch the weekly calendar for upcoming meetings in the Internet of Things, Business Intelligence, Human Resources, Health Technology and Cloud. As other needs arise among the MTBC membership, additional forums will be considered. All of these changes are the result of a strategic planning task force formed earlier this year and charged with examining how the MTBC can do a better job in helping the tech com-munity thrive in North Texas. The task force created the new vision statement – “We champion and serve the technology community across North Texas” – and recommended changes that will align the organization to this new vision. “These changes will create more opportunities to have our customers in the room with us,” said Novak. “As the MTBC con-tinues to grow, we are working to increase our effectiveness in serving our members and our tech community.”

Targeted special interest groups/forums delve deeper into topics

As part of its larger strategic effort, the MTBC is encouraging those with targeted subjects in their perspective technical fields to get involved with an ever-expanding group of special inter-est forums from the MTBC.

Building on its history and structure of connecting people, new special interest forums are joining already established special interest forums like the Cloud Computing Forum, and commit-tee efforts like the Advocacy, Talent and Innovation teams.

The vision of the special interest forum is built on the highly successful model established by the Technology Association of Georgia (TAG). During the next five years, the MTBC hopes to establish 3-5 new forums each year, expanding up to 30 forums, depending on interest and support.

Groups are expected to meet quarterly to discuss topics in roundtable, panel or speaker formats, depending on needs. A special interest forum governing body has been established to determine development of new groups.

Our list of forums are continually evolving. Visit www.metrop-lextbc.org/forums to see the latest list and get involved today!
