Planning for housing in MaroondahThe Maroondah Municipal Housing Strategy 1997 has successfully guided the development of housing across the municipality. It is now time for an update.The Maroondah Municipal Housing Strategy 1997 sought to:

‘provide a framework for the development and maintenance of diverse and

sustainable housing opportunities in the City of Maroondah’.

The Strategy has helped to ensure that existing urban and environmental qualities are protected and enhanced whilst encouraging increased residential opportunities in appropriate locations. Since 1997 Maroondah has experienced:

Preferred areas developed for medium density development, located close to existing urban infrastructure

Explicit designation of Ringwood as a Metropolitan Activity Centre and Croydon as an important activity centre

Areas of special environmental quality and diverse landscapes being protected with planning zone and overlay controls.

Important planning policy updates have also occurred as follows:

‘Maroondah 2040’ Community Vision - a blueprint for the future of Maroondah that reflects the aspirations and hopes of the community

‘Plan Melbourne’ Metropolitan Planning Strategy - outlining the vision for Melbourne’s growth to the year 2050

Maroondah Planning Scheme Review 2012-2013 - an important periodical review undertaken in line with the Planning & Environment Act 1987 to update and align planning policy

Victorian Residential Zone Reforms 2013-2014 - have simplified requirements, allowed a broader range of activities to be considered and have made available a

range of zones to better manage growth.
