You’re invited to join other Avery Ranch residents who get together for monthly garden meetings. We call ourselves the Avery Garden Rancheros. Some of our activities have included talks on Lawn Care, Dry Climate Landscaping, Rainwater Conservation, and a field trip to a Master Gardener seminar on How to Design a Garden. We try to work in potluck lunches whenever we can.

What’s different about this group is that there are no dues, we don’t take minutes or use Robert Rules of Order. No one is going to ask you to serve on a board, because we don’t have one! We just get together for a gardening topic of interest once a month, usually at someone’s home, and enjoy learning about gardening while we get to know each other. The only requirement is that you are an Avery Ranch resident.

Photos with Santa will continue on weekends starting November 28 until Christmas, excluding December 12. Another holiday event for the whole family is the Lighting of the Square, located around the county’s historic courthouse in downtown Georgetown at 710 Main St. Held each year on the Friday after Thanksgiving at dusk, this year’s celebration will be on Nov. 27th. The Austin Carolers will sing Christmas carols and hot chocolate will be available. Also, many stores along the square will be open late for Christmas shopping.

Keep Inflation in mind When InvestingBy Matt Smith

As an investor, you’re always aware of the potential effects of market volatility on your portfolio. But you also need to pay attention to another factor that could impact your investments’ return — inflation.

If you look back over the last few decades, you might not think inflation is much of a threat. Since the double-digit rates of the early 1980s, inflation has fallen significantly and, for the most part, has stayed low. Still, over time even a mild annual inflation rate can eventually erode your purchasing power.

Obviously, if you’re a retiree, or close to retiring, you need to plan for the impact of inflation on your income stream, which may, to a large degree, depend on the types of investments you own. But even if you’re at an earlier stage in life, you need to think about inflation because it can reduce the “real” rate of return you receive on your investments.

In any case, you can find investments that may be able to help you cope with inflation. When you own stocks, for example, you’ve got an ownership stake in companies that have the ability to raise prices — which make them effective inflation-fighting investments. Keep in mind an investment in stocks fluctuates and you can lose your money.

But one of the biggest inflation-fighting benefits of stocks is the dividends that they may pay. Well-run companies may reward investors by paying them back with dividends — and some companies have increased their dividends annually for decades. A word of caution, though: Companies can reduce or eliminate them at any time, without

notice. In fact, during the long market slump we experienced, some companies did cut back on their dividend payments.

Not all stocks pay dividends, of course. In any case, if you’re going to maintain a balanced portfolio, you’ll also want to own other types of investments, such as bonds. But many bonds — along with other fixed-income vehicles, such as Certificates of Deposit — are not good “inflation fighters” because the fixed rate of return they offer simply may not keep up with inflation. However, if you built a “bond ladder” — that is, a group of bonds with varying maturities — you’d have more flexibility in combating inflation, because your longer-term bonds typically offer higher interest rates.

What about the so-called “inflation hedges,” such as commodities and real estate? Actually, these “hedges” are extremely volatile and should be approached with great caution. You need look no further back than the bursting of the housing “bubble” to see that real estate, for instance, can go down just as fast as it goes up — and once down, it can take years to recover.

In your efforts to invest wisely for the future, inflation is only one of the variables you need to consider. But it can be an important one — so make sure you choose the investments that both address inflation and can help you make progress toward all your financial goals.

Did you know that Austin had a world-class freeway plan as of 1985 which would have nearly eliminated the congestion that we experience today? And that by 1987 a major arterial network had been designed for northwest Austin? Why were all these freeways cancelled, and why are freeways which were never on these plans being built today?

The next time you’re sitting in traffic on one of our scenic roadways, just imagine wider lanes, better connectors, and (no, it can’t be true!) actual east-west roads in this town. The city planners were well aware of the city’s needs and its growth patterns as far back as the early 1960’s, when the first freeway plans were announced. But that plan was for mostly an inner-city freeway system, one which did not go far out of town. By the end of the decade that plan had been cancelled, all except Mopac Loop 1. That was probably the best thing because otherwise downtown would have been all chopped up with freeways. Traces of it still exist, such as the wide places on Riverside Drive east of I-35.

This plan went through several iterations including a Crosstown Freeway system, but they were eventually retired in favor of the broader freeway plan of 1980. This plan focused on existing corridors away from the center of the city. The new major freeways were Loop 360 freeway (later cancelled), and the 183 freeway all the way through Austin. Loop 360 was “downgraded” from a freeway to a corridor, though it space is there to be upgraded to a freeway.

The most comprehensive freeway plan was the 1985 plan, which showed a sprawling network of freeways in Austin including an inner and outer loop. It also featured the Koenig Lane Freeway, coming east to west from the Hwy 290 out to Loop 360. The 2222 Freeway was west of 360 out toward Lake Travis. The Outer Loop Freeway (SH 45) was the outer limits. The MoKan Freeway became SH 130. 1987 saw the extension of these freeways. Interestingly, on the 1985 and 1987 maps, the Outer Loop appears to show that Quinlan Park

Road (now part of Steiner Ranch) would be part of the loop, forming a bridge over Lake Austin and back over to Bee Cave Road.

In 1994, environmentalists took control of the Austin City Council and nearly all the freeway plans were immediately cancelled. At the same time, the Austin Chamber of Commerce did its job well and advertised what a great place Austin was to live. As a result, since 1994, Austin has experienced explosive growth from a high-tech boom and severe traffic congestion. The new Mobility Plan from CAMPO, revised every two years, strives to cope with the need for roadways and the desire to keep Austin beautiful. One of the most dramatic natural events occurs every fall when changing weather patterns mark the migration of hawks (also called raptors, or birds of prey) from their summer nesting and breeding grounds to their wintering grounds in South America. While northward migration in the spring months is more sporadic and allows for hawks to spread out over a larger geographic area, fall migration is the more spectacular of the two, with millions of hawks observed overhead in concentrated groups within a period of only a few months.

Scientists believe that hawks use a myriad of tools to find their way along migratory routes. First and foremost, they orient themselves by using a sun compass, or knowing where the sun should be at any given time of day. Some also use a polarization pattern of light for orientation, and are able to find the portion of the sky where light is uni-directional and utilize it to estimate the sun’s position. Lastly, most hawks bring into play a magnetic compass, which allows them to orient themselves to the Earth’s magnetic field.

In order to get airborne and use these internal orientation systems, hawks find thermals, or large columns of warm air, and ride these rising air currents in a spiral, high into the sky. From this vantage point, they

glide slowly down in the intended direction, and search for the next thermal to help move them along their way. From these elevated perspectives, hawks generally navigate by large geographic features or landmarks, such as coastlines, waterways, and mountain ranges.

The most common species of hawk that migrate over our area start with the Mississippi kite, continue with the Broad-winged hawk, and end with Swainson’s hawk. Dark gray above and pale gray below with a red eye, long pointed wings, and a dark flared tail, the Mississippi kite hunts primarily insects, eats on the wing, and nests in loose colonies in woodlands and swamps in the southeast and south central United States. Brown-gray above with white underwings bordered in black, and a broad tail with black and white bands, the Broad-winged hawk breeds in the eastern woodlands of the United States and

southern Canada. The largest of the three, the Swainson’s hawk light morph is the color form that is most likely seen in our area. In flight, their long, narrow pointed wings exhibit a dark trailing edge and light leading edge, a dark chest bib, and light face and lower belly. These hawks hunt chiefly small mammals and insects in the grassland areas of the western United States and Canada.

Large groups of hawks flying overhead are called kettles. During fall migration, single kettles of 10,000 hawks are routine,

and single flights of over 100,000 hawks or more have been recorded. Occasionally, a strong cold front will ground several thousand hawks for the day and result in an overnight roost. Weather in the northern and eastern United States is one of the biggest factors in determining the timing of these migratory flights.

With the large number of hawks taking part in this annual event and the vast geographic areas that they cover, it was late into the 19th century before migration was beginning to be understood. With large populations of hawks shifting from breeding to wintering habitat, migration is a seasonal and predicable event that can be enjoyed year after year!

It is also never a bad idea to have a fruit and/or vegetable tray available for those who are vegetarian or for low-calorie snacking. Whether you are tailgating at the stadium or “tablegating” in your living room, it’s easy to keep game day food fun, tasty and healthy. You’ve been looking forward to Thanksgiving dinner all year — turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. Mmm-mmm! But after you finish that second helping of turkey with gravy, you start to feel a little sleepy.

As your Uncle George starts to explain why eating turkey makes people so tired, you suddenly feel like curling up in front of the TV and napping until next Thanksgiving. But is gobbling up all that turkey really to blame?

tHe usuAl susPeCt: l-tryPtOPHAnNot exactly. Here’s why: Turkey meat contains a

lot of an amino acid called L-tryptophan (say: el-trip-teh-fan). Amino acids are the “building blocks” for the proteins that make up our muscles and other important parts of our bodies. (L-tryptophan is just one kind of amino acid — there are many different kinds of amino acids in the foods we eat.)

When we eat foods that contain L-tryptophan, this amino acid travels in the blood from the digestive system and later enters the brain. The brain then changes the L-tryptophan into another chemical called serotonin (say: sare-uh-toh-nin). Serotonin calms us down and helps us sleep.

But scientists now know that L-tryptophan can really only make a person tired right away if it is eaten or taken by itself without any amino acids. And the protein in turkey contains plenty of other amino acids!

BlAMe it On BlOOd flOwMost scientists think that there’s a different

reason why eating a special meal might make you drowsy. Eating a big Thanksgiving dinner causes increased blood flow to the stomach (needed to help digest the meal) and less blood flow to the brain.

AvOiding drOwsinessSo just how do you avoid that sleepy feeling on

Turkey Day?• Eat small, healthy meals (try to limit junk foods)

throughout the day before you sit down for your big meal — don't starve yourself in anticipation of the feast to come.

• Have small portions of foods that are part of your Thanksgiving meal (including whatever veggies are on the table).

• Drink water and take breaks while you are eating to see how full you've become.

• Stop eating once you're full — there will always be leftovers tomorrow.

• Finally, take a walk outside afterward to digest your meal. This will make you feel better than crashing on the couch.Follow these tips and have a Happy Thanksgiving
