Characteristics of Effective Learning

Playing and Exploring

Child M is very curious about the world and is always investigating and exploring outside. M enjoys a new challenge and often initiates his own challenges which he likes everyone else to get involved with. M always perseveres with an activity and will not stop until it is complete.

Active Learning

Child M can concentrate on an activity for a sustained period of time. He thoroughly enjoys building dens and can become very involved. He has his own ideas for instance when he decided to build a water proof den because the clouds were grey. Child M is always delighted with his own achievements and is very keen to share them with others.

Creating and Thinking Critically

Child M is very confident and enjoys finding new way to do things. He will ask questions and adapt his strategies if necessary. This is particularly evident when he builds obstacle courses.

M thoroughly enjoys being outside where he can enjoy physical activities. He is always building dens. He thinks very carefully about what is needed before he builds it. M adapted this one to make it more “cosy”. Once M had finished making the den he invited his friends to join him. (October 2016)

Child M is able to toilet independently and always washes his hands after. M also explains to other children why they need to wash their hands. “You will get germs in your tummy and you will be sick”

(September 2016)

M dressed himself independently for the Christmas production. M was very proud that he didn’t need any help. Child M also helped others to put on their costumes. (December 2016)
