From the Pastor’s Desk...

Holy Week reminds us of a great many things. The narrative of the Passion on Palm Sunday (St. Luke) tells us of the crowds that hailed Jesus as he entered Jerusalem. The Passion Gospel proclaimed on Good Friday (St. John) tells us that angry crowds demanded his death before Pontius Pilate.

The Gospel on Holy Thursday depicts Jesus placing a servant’s apron on himself and washing the feet of his disciples. He commands them to be servants to one another. The same narrative depicts the disciples as abandoning Jesus at the moment of his arrest in the garden. Peter, to clear himself of any association or suspicion, denies he even knows Jesus. As Jesus hangs dying on the cross, he forgives his persecutors who have crucified him. He forgives the one robber, the good thief, crucified with him. We experience again the tragic reality that Judas Iscariot, who had betrayed Jesus, despairs for God’s forgiveness. He takes his own life, not believing in redemption or forgiveness.

Holy Week teaches us many things. Above all, it describes the selfless love of Jesus Christ, who chose to share our fear of death and our very death itself. We believe in a crucified God, whose own human form is subjected to the cruelty and inhumanity of man. He chose to redeem us, to “buy us back,” as the original Latin root word signifies. We behold God who sits not in judgment, but hangs on the cross.

Come to the liturgies of Holy Week, Fr. Bill Arnold

A dinner will be held for the parishioners of both St. Philip and Holy Spirit prior to the Mass of the Lord’s Supper at 7:00 p.m., at Holy Spirit. This is an invitation to all parishioners and their

families. (It is expected that if one attends the dinner, that one intends to participate in the Mass which follows.) Serving begins at 5:30 p.m. There is no cost for the meal, but reservations are required. Please, call in your reservation no later than tomorrow, Monday, April 15th.

• For St. Philip the Apostle parishioners, please call your parish office at 614-237-1671.

• For Holy Spirit parishioners, please call your parish office at 614-861-1521.

If you cannot attend the supper you are, of course, urged to celebrate the beginning of the Sacred Triduum at the Holy Thursday Mass at 7:00 p.m. This is a wonderful way to begin the observance of the holiest days of the Catholic calendar.

Please note: Mass on Tuesday, April 16th will be a school liturgy, and Mass on Wednesday, April 17th will be held at St. Philip at 9:00 a.m.

Additional Holy Spirit Information

HOLY SPIRIT SCHOOLApril 16 (Tuesday) – School Liturgy – Dress Uniform – 8:15 a.m.April 18 – April 22 – Easter BreakApril 23 – Classes Resume

Holy Spirit School is preparing for Holy Week by quieting our minds and hearts with prayer and service. Our third through eighth graders are in the middle of their AIR State Test for Language Arts

and Science. They will begin Math after Easter. Our second graders are preparing for their First Holy Communion at the end of this month; please keep them in your prayers. Thank you for all of your continuous support and prayers.

Amy Chessler, Principal

Thank You and Congratulations for Lenten Almsgiving. During the fi rst fi ve Sundays of Lent, parishioners of St. Philip the Apostle and Holy Spirit Parish were asked to perform “almsgiving,” or sharing with the poor, at the second collection after Holy Communion.

I asked that you consider donations to the community/ministry work of the Piarist Fathers of Hagerhill, Kentucky. Fr. Tom Carroll came to us last year as part of our annual “mission appeal.”

The totals from both parishes are astounding and gratifying:

St. Philip the Apostle Parish $ 4,834.15Holy Spirit Parish $ 5,390.13Total $10,224.28

Many, many thanks go out to all of you. Fr. Carroll will be overwhelmed and greatly surprised. True to his word, he will write us a thank-you acknowledgement. I will publish his letter, when it arrives, in the bulletin for all of you to read. I wish you God’s overwhelming grace for your help for the people of eastern Kentucky. Fr. Bill Arnold

Palm Sunday: Jesus entered Jerusalem riding a young donkey, and to the lavish praise of the townspeople who threw clothes, or possibly palms or small branches, in front of him as a sign of homage. Palm branches are a widely recognized symbol of peace and victory. The palms are blessed and many people will fashion them into small crosses or other items of personal devotion. Because the palms are blessed, they may not be discarded as trash. Instead, they are appropriately gathered at the church and incinerated to create the ashes that will be used in the following year’s Ash Wednesday observance.

Holy Week is the most sacred week on the Christian calendar, and Catholics in particular hold the Sacred Triduum (TRID-OO-um), Latin for “three days” as commemoration of Christ’s redemptive passage through death, burial and resurrection to new life. The Church observes the Triduum as a single event made up of three distinctive parts. In accordance with the custom in Biblical times, each “day” begins in the evening.

Next Sunday begins the fi fty-day celebration of the Easter Season. The importance of the Resurrection is refl ected in the length of the season. The Paschal Mystery is celebrated for seven Sundays, ending with the celebration of the Ascension of the Lord and Pentecost, the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles.

Holy Week reminds us, however, that if we would rise with Him, we must fi rst die with Him. Please come to the celebrations of the three Sacred Days as a sign of your commitment to the Catholic Community of St. Philip and Holy Spirit Parishes. Below is the list of liturgical events which will take place in our parishes this coming Holy Week:

Holy Thursday, April 18, all parishioners from Holy Spirit and St. Philip are invited to share a meal together at 5:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall, and celebrate the Mass of the Lord’s Supper in church at 7:00 p.m. At Mass, we commemorate the washing of the feet and the commitment to priestly service. After Mass, there is the procession to the Repository and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament until midnight in the church.

Good Friday, April 19, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Philip and 7:00 p.m. at Holy Spirit is the solemn Celebration of the Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The Passion according to John is proclaimed, the Holy Cross is venerated, and Holy Communion is distributed.

Holy Saturday, April 20, at 8:30 p.m. at Holy Spirit, we will celebrate the Easter Vigil, preceded by the beautiful once a year ceremonies of the Easter Night: The blessing of the New Fire, the lighting of the Easter Candle, Scripture readings narrating Salvation History, and the Baptism of new members into the Church.

Easter Sunday, April 21:~ Mass at 9:00 a.m. at St. Philip the Apostle~ Mass at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Spirit

Happy Spirits/Silver Stars: Our 50+ senior gathering for the Crowning of our Blessed Mother Mary will be held on the second Thursday, May 9th at 1:30 p.m. Please bring a covered dish to share. Call Bob Udeck at 614-738-1267 with questions.

Let’s have a frank conversation about your insurance.

Rice Bowls – Bring to Holy Thursday Mass: If you have adopted the Lenten Practice of fi lling a Rice Bowl as a sign of sacrifi ce and self-denial for the poor and hungry of the World, bring your Rice Bowl to the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday evening. There will be no regular Mass collection that evening. Baskets will be placed at the back of the Church to accept the Rice Bowls and then brought forward at offertory. The Rice bowls for St. Philip and Holy Spirit will be counted together.

Good Friday Holy Land Collection: Pope Francis has asked us to support the Pontifi cal Good Friday Collection, which helps Christians in the Holy Land. The wars, unrest and instability have been

especially hard on Christians, and in these times of crisis, this collection provides humanitarian aid to refugees. When you contribute to this collection, you become an instrument of peace and join with Catholics around the world in solidarity with the Church in the Holy Land. If you gave nothing in the past, consider making some type of gift. If you gave a dollar last year, think of giving two. If you gave fi ve dollars, why not make it seven or ten? If you won’t be at the Good Friday service, put your gift in an envelope marked “Good Friday Collection” and drop it in the Sunday collection. Please be generous!

Proper Disposal of Old Palm Branches.Palms distributed each year on Palm Sunday are a sacramental, an item blessed by the Church for the spiritual benefi t of the faithful. They serve as a sacred reminder of the Lord’s entry into Jerusalem and his coming death on Good Friday.

Burning the palms in your fi replace is the ideal solution for disposal. Do not burn them with household garbage. Digging a small hole in the ground and burning them, or cutting the palms into small pieces and burying them in the ground, is another good option. Annual Women’s Breakfast is May 5, 2019, at TAT, after the St. Philip 9:00 a.m. Mass. This breakfast is open to all women from both parishes, and you are urged to invite your friends, daughters and neighbors to enjoy this special day too. Please plan to join in

the fun and reconnect with family and friends. The cost of the breakfast is $14.00 per person. Don’t miss out on our great raffl e! Register by April 30th. Call Judy Ketterer at 614-861-5025 or email [email protected], or call Angie Carfagna at 614-231-8872, or the Holy Spirit Parish offi ce at 614-861-1521.

A St. Philip/Holy Spirit Men’s Group Is Organizing. Nine men from both parishes attended the Men’s Catholic Conference last February. They attended a day of speakers and services sponsored by the Catholic Men’s Ministries of Columbus and the Diocese. It was a day of fellowship and prayer that needs to be built upon. Nine was not enough. The goal is to triple that number for next year’s conference on February 22nd. Mark your calendar.

Fr. Arnold has approved and is encouraging the formation of a men’s group/club/ministry, from the men and young men of both parishes, with the goal of building community. We will kick it off by having a monthly hour of refl ection/discussion on a Saturday morning, where we meet and listen to a CD presentation by a respected Catholic speaker, like the presentations we listened to during the Conference, but on CD. I have volunteered to host the fi rst couple of meetings, but I need an idea of how many are interested/coming. Let’s meet Saturday, April 27th at 10:00 a.m., and listen to a 50-60 minute presentation. RSVP Mark or Linda Decker at 614-866-3793. See you at 8810 Chateau Drive in Pickerington. Let’s listen to our hearts. Let’s listen to our Faith. Let’s grow in our Faith. See you then.

Around the DioceseOhio Dominican to Host Discussion on Opioid Epidemic: ODU will host, “Inside the Epidemic: The Opioid Crisis in Columbus.” The free event will take place on April 15th, in the Matesich Theatre, located in Erskine Hall on ODU’s campus at 1216 Sunbury Road, Columbus, 43219. The event begins with a reception at 6:15 p.m., and a panel discussion from 7:00-9:00 p.m.

Good Friday Walking Stations of the Cross. The walk begins with opening prayer at St. Joseph Cathedral, 212 E. Broad Street, Columbus, at 8:00 a.m., on Friday, April 19th. Hundreds of participants from across the diocese will process to locations throughout downtown Columbus to recognize Jesus Christ’s suffering and crucifi xion, as well as to refl ect on current areas of social concern. Open to all ages. For more information, contact the diocesan Offi ce for Social Concerns at (614) 241-2540 or the Offi ce of Youth and Young Adult Ministry at (614) 241-2565.
