FR. JIM’S CORNER Today I want to talk about “Feast Days” and “Patron Saints.” The Catholic Church assigns one date out of the year for each and every canonized saint – known as the saint’s feast day. A saint’s feast day can be the day of their actual death or a day assigned by the Church. Because of the number of canonized saints, many times two or more saints often share the same feast day. Some saint’s feasts are only celebrated in the par-ticular saint’s town or country. Others are internation-ally celebrated. For example, St. Patrick’s Day (March 17th) is celebrated in Ireland because he is the patron saint of the whole nation. And it is also celebrated in the US due to the large Irish immigrants who crossed the Atlantic. The feast of St. Joseph (March 19th) is cele-brated in Canada and Europe with more hoopla than we do here in the US. Some people ask “Why say prayers to Saints?” Shouldn’t all our prayers be to God? Praying to the saints is praying to God, in a fundamental way. We’re praying to those who can ask God to help us in our various needs in accordance with his will. Almost all canonized saints have been put in charge of various causes. These saints are our protectors as well as our intercessors. Some of the more popular ones are: St. Anthony – for lost articles; St. Jude – for lost causes; St. Peregine – for cancer victims. Do you know your patron saint? Do you know their feast day? Do you know the cause for which we pray to them? I must admit that when I perform a baptism or assist at a Confirmation, many times the chosen name is not a Christian name at all. The Church continues to remind Catholic parents that they should be choosing Christian names for their children. It should not be done “by chance” or whim, but should reinforce the relationship between the sacrament of baptism and the Christian life. For the Christian, the goal is not to choose a name that will make the top 10 most popular names for boys and girls in a given year. Choosing a Christian or Biblical name is a concrete reminder that God is calling.

God Bless. Idi sa Bogom Fr. Jim

COMMUNITY NEWS

THE LORD PROVIDES – Even when we strive to be close with God we can wonder if he’s really lis-tening to us or if he really cares for us with an unquenchable love. This is especially true in mo-ments of trial or challenge. Yet, we know that when we focus our eyes and ears and hearts on the things of God we can see his love at work for us in all things. In his letter to the Romans, Saint Paul reminds us that “the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable,” that nothing can separate us from

his love. Are you challenged by the changes that will soon take place in your parish and throughout the Diocese of Pittsburgh? Join Bishop David Zubik in prayer and worship at one of the On Mission for The Church Alive! Summer Ses-sions and be renewed in God’s love for his people. The changes may challenge us, but we trust in the work of the Holy Spirit to provide the gifts and resources for the Church to grow and thrive. The Summer Sessions will be held from 7:00-8:30 p.m. on the following days: Thur., Aug. 24 at St. Mary of the Assumption, Glenshaw; Mon., Aug. 28 at St. Thomas More, Bethel Park; Tue., Aug. 29 at St. Margaret Mary, Moon Twp; Wed., Aug. 30 at Saint Kilian, Adams/Cranberry Townships. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more it and to stay informed.

SECOND COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND Next week, our sec-ond collection is for the Catholic Commu-nication Campaign. This campaign con-nects people with Christ, here and around the world in

developing countries, through the internet, television, radio, and print media. Fifty per-cent of funds collected remains in our diocese to fund local COMMUNICATIONS ef-forts. Your support helps spread the gospel message! To learn more, visit www.usccb.org/ccc.

OUR VICAR RETIRING Fr. Bob Guay has been our Regional Vicar of Vicariate 1 for the past eight years. He will retire on his 70th birthday in September. Bishop Waltersheid will be taking over as the New Vicar of Vicariate 1 and will be the Dean of the Regional Vicars. I am personally grateful to Fr. Guay, my classmate, who has been very supportive of me in the brief time I have served here. His leadership has always been positive, collaborative and sincere as he willingly assumed the awesome job that was given to him. We welcome Bishop Waltersheid and look forward to his pastoral leadership. On his appointment, he stated “I look forward with great joy to working with all of you in proclaim-ing Christ’s Gospel and building up His Body, the Church in our diocese”.

WHY CHOOSE CATHOLIC SCHOOLS? Everyone would agree that parents are their child’s primary educators. As such, parents have many options in selecting an educational institution for their child. Lots of schools offer great programs in English, math, science and history. Catholic schools offers these as well, but they do so by integrating faith into every subject. That is the Catholic School difference. As you have heard, the new North Hills Regional Catholic Elementary Schools will launch

their inaugural academic year in a few weeks. Three regionalized schools have been formed from seven existing par-ishes. With initial enrollment unknown, the start-up to assist with the financial impact on the seven parishes will need to be expanded to all the parishes in the North Hills Region in some format yet to be determined. It’s not too late to register: For Blessed Francis Seelos Academy, call 724-935-1152; for Blessed Trinity Academy, call 412-486-7611; for Holy Cross Academy, call 412-364-7171. These new regional Catholic Schools hope to provide a child with on-going formation in their faith, to develop each student’s God-given gifts, and to prepare them for success in higher education and the global marketplace. Consider the possibilities! Discover Catholic Schools!
