St. Mary Magdalen Happenings

“W elcome one another, therefore, as Christ has wel-comed you, for the glory of God.” - Romans 15:7

And so we welcome you! We are truly glad that you joined us today. Our two communities, St. Mary Magdalen and Holy Spirit Churches, are warm, faith-filled, loving and united in the mission of Christ. We are here to serve you and we invite you to join with us in the service of God and neighbor.

September is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in men. Prostate cancer usually grows slowly and initially remains confined to the prostate gland, where it may not cause serious harm. While some types of prostate cancer grow slowly and may need minimal or no treatment, other types are aggressive and can spread quickly.

Prostate cancer that is detected early when it's still confined to the prostate gland has a better chance of successful treatment.

Please wear your Blue Ribbon or Something Blue during the month of September in Support of Prostate Cancer Awareness.

Reminder: Discuss any and all health concerns with your Physician.

Thank You, St. Mary Magdalen African American Ministry

On Isaiah I recently enrolled in a Bible class that is studying the Book of Isaiah. Isaiah is consid-ered the greatest of all prophets, and his Book is among the world’s greatest pieces of religious literature. It’s also the longest book of the Bible, excluding Psalms. It examines the mystery of a people’s life with God, constantly reminding them of their destiny and His faithfulness to them — TO US. God does not care about burnt or worthless offerings, rather, His wish is for us to be good and do good, help those in need and make justice our aim. This Sunday, in Isaiah 55:6-9, we are reminded that our ways and God’s ways are NOT alike. “As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways above your ways,” says the Lord. Simi-larly, in the Gospel reading of Matthew 20: 1-16, Jesus shows God’s generosity and abundance in the parable about the land-owner who pays all the field hands the same wage no matter how long they worked. Yes, God’s ways are different. He doesn’t care about our “fairness standard” but wants us to understand that we don’t have to be envious of each other. It’s a lesson for all of us to strive to be more Christ-like, and imi-tate God’s faithfulness to us by Last Sunday, I attended an awards ceremony at the Cathedral, and as I was leaving, I noticed a plaque near the front door that read: “My house shall be called a house of prayer for all people” Isaiah 56:7. This verse epitomizes God’s love for us, and is an invitation to dwell with Him, in goodness and in kindness, forever. Amen.

Did You Know? Knowing Internet lingo can help parents safeguard children Online chat rooms, instant messaging systems, and even cell phones equipped to send text messages are environments rich in abbrevia-tions, acronyms, and other shorthand that help increase the speed of communication.

Parents need to become aware of some of the common lingo that is used in these environments. Some of these terms may be found to be vulgar, degrading, or otherwise offensive. However, par-ents and educators need to have a level of understanding of the dangers that face our children.

St. Mary Magdalen Happenings

Reflection for Families How many times a day do our children point out that someone got more than they did? Enough for us to know that today’s Gospel illustrates a human response! But our human ways are not God’s ways. God’s generosity is sometimes beyond our understanding. But imagine what a world it would be if we rejoiced in generosity and good fortune of others.
