    A Study on

The Holy Spiritby Terri Copeland Pearsons

    I. The New Birth Alone Is Not the Fullness of Our Salvation

    A. Were born again to receive the promise of the Spirit (Galatians 3:13-14)

    1. As Christians we are born of the Spirit (John 3:5-8)2. He is the One who bears witness with our spirits that we are sons of God (Romans 8:16)3. We can gain understanding of the Spirit because we have His Word, which has much to say

about Him4. He is sent with the specific assignment to teach, guide and reveal (John 16:13-15)

    B. Man lost his place in the realm of the spirit (the heavenly realm, heaven)1. Man is a three-part being: spirit, soul and body (1 Thessalonians 5:23)

    a. Adam was created a speaking spirit, like God who is a Spirit (John 4:24), in three parts:Father, Son and Holy Spirit

    b. Heaven and earth were together, divinely connectedc. When Adam embraced sin, he and his domain were disconnected from the Lord

    d. Adam was kicked out of the realm of spiritual authority where heaven and earthwere together

    2. Man had to be reconnected to life before he could re-enter his spiritual authorityC. The spiritual realm was reopened by Jesus blood (Ephesians 2:13; Hebrews 10:19-20)

    D. We have access by the Spirit (Ephesians 2:18). He makes it real.E. First Example:

    1. Jesus said, Receive the Holy Spirit and He breathed on them (John 20:22)2. This was the same as in Genesis 2:7. Life was breathed into man and he was alive with the

life of God.F. This time there was more givento take us beyond Adams position, all the way to include

the power of the throne working in this world, making us witnesses of a heavenly kingdom(Acts 1:4, 8)

II. How Important Is the Holy Spirit to the Plan of God for Mankind?

    A. The Spirit and the Word are the two essential elements on which our relationship with the Lordis founded. God is a Spirit. We must worship Him in spirit and truth (John 4:23).

    1. The Word reveals the things of the Spirit, and the Spirit quickens, reveals and brings to lifethe Word: It is the Spirit Who gives life [He is the Life-giver]. (John 6:63, AMP)

    2. The words (truths) that I have been speaking to you are spirit and life. (John 6:63, AMP)3. The Word and the Spirit always agree, and more importantly, they are one. For there are

three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these threeare one (1 John 5:7).

    4. Everything from the very beginning has been by the Spirit moving on what God said. In thebeginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty,

darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over thewaters. And God said, Let there be light, and there was light (Genesis 1:1-3, NIV). The

pattern was established: God speaks and the Spirit moves.5. Everything is because of the Word but by the Spirit

    B. Every part of Jesus life, ministry and redemptive work was by the Spirit1. How did Jesus come?

    a. The Word was made flesh (John 1:14), but how?

    b. Then the angel said to her, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of theMost High will overshadow you [like a shining cloud]; and so the holy (pure, sinless)

Thing (Offspring) which shall be born of you will be called the Son of God.(Luke 1:35, AMP)

    2. How did Jesus enter the ministry?a. Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized,

and [while He was still] praying, the [visible] heaven was opened and the Holy Spiritdescended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came from heaven,

saying, You are My Son, My Beloved! In You I am well pleased and find delight!(Luke 3:21-22, AMP)

    3. How did Jesus qualify for ministry?a. Then Jesus, full of and controlled by the Spirit, was led by the Spirit into the

wilderness...and Jesus went back full of and under the power of the Spirit.(Luke 4:1-2, 14)

    4. How did Jesus fulfill His ministry?a. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to

the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the

acceptable year of the Lord. (Luke 4:18-19)

    b. How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who wentabout doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was withhim. (Acts 10:38)

    5. How can His death 2,000 years ago affect someones life now?a. ...Who by virtue of [His] eternal Spirit has offered Himself as an unblemished sacrifice

to God. (Hebrews 9:14, AMP)6. How was He raised from the dead?

    a. And if the Spirit of Him Who raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, [then] HeWho raised up Christ Jesus from the dead will also restore to life your mortal (short-

lived, perishable) bodies through His Spirit Who dwells in you. (Romans 8:11, AMP)b. Jesus was justified through the Spirit (1 Timothy 3:16)

    c. He was quickened by the Spirit (1 Peter 3:18)C. Everything God did for man came by the work of the Holy Spirit

are produced by the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23, AMP)6. We abound in hope by the Holy Ghost (Romans 15:13)

    7. There is no condemnation for those who follow after the Spirit (Romans 8:1)

    8. We crucify the flesh by the power of the Spirit (Romans 8:13; Galatians 5:24-25)9. We are led by the Spirit (Romans 8:14)10. He assures us we are Gods children (Romans 8:16, AMP)

    11. Paul said that all Christ had done through him (preaching, signs and wonders) was throughthe power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 15:19, AMP)

    12. We have been marked as His own by the Spirit (Ephesians 4:30, AMP)13. He guides us into the Truth, revealing Gods Word, Gods will and Gods voice

(John 16:13, AMP)14. The future is revealed by the Spirit (John 16:13, AMP)

    15. The Spirit reveals what belongs to Jesus that He has given to us (John 16:14, AMP)

    3. No other work of the Spirit is so exhaustive, so vital or so available. No wonder Jesus said itwas a sign of those who truly believe (Mark 16:17).

    E. Those who walk in the greatest revelations of the Word and have the greatest demonstrationsof signs and wonders pray in other tongues. (In Mark 16:17 it is the summary of most

    spiritual activity.)

VI. TonguesAn Overview of PurposeA. 1 Corinthians 14 reads a lot like a dictionary. It gives many different end results.

    1. Speaks not to men but to God (1 Corinthians 14:2, AMP)a. Turns your face away from men (the natural) to Him

    2. You edify yourself (1 Corinthians 14:4)a. May He grant you out of the rich treasury of His glory to be strengthened and reinforced

    3. Praying in tongues refreshes and relieves the mind of resourcing (1 Corinthians 14:14-15)a. For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. To whom

he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is therefreshing. (Isaiah 28:11-12)

    b. Mental knowledge is limited in scope (cant see the future) and is influenced and

corrupted by human reason and emotionc. Tongues keeps praying on a level higher than mental knowledge can produced. Pray that you may interpret (1 Corinthians 14:13). Not only ask, but pray through to

interpretation. Dont quit too soon.e. Interpretationmight be instant enlightenment ormight come laterormight play out

    4. You give thanks well (1 Corinthians 14:16-17)a. Helps locate true gratitude and love for God (Romans 5:5)

    6. Is a keying to walking in lovea. But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy

Ghost, keep yourselves in the love of God. (Jude 20-21)b. Such hope never disappoints or deludes or shames us, for Gods love has been poured

out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit Who has been given to us. (Romans 5:5, AMP)B. Tongues: Mystery Master, Problem Solver (1 Corinthians 14:2)What kind of mysteries?

    1. The mysteries of God HimselfHis thoughts, feelings and purposes (1 Corinthians

2:14-16, AMP)2. The bottomless things of God (1 Corinthians 2:9-10, AMP) such as:

    e. The world of politicsf. The world of sports

    g. The world of military strategy4. The mystery of the future

    a. He will show you things to come (John 16:13)b. Gods plan for your day: You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was

recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.(Psalm 139:16, NLT)

    c. Gods plan for your destiny: For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you

hope in your final outcome. Then you will call upon Me, and you will come and pray toMe, and I will hear and heed you. Then you will seek Me, inquire for, and require Me

[as a vital necessity] and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. I will befound by you, says the Lord, and I will release you from captivity and gather you from

all the nations and all the places to which I have driven you, says the Lord, and I willbring you back to the place from which I caused you to be carried away captive.

(Jeremiah 29:11-14, AMP)d. A taste of the world to come (Hebrews 10:1); And not only the creation, but we

ourselves too, who have and enjoy the first fruits of the [Holy] Spirit [a foretaste of the

blissful things to come] groan inwardly as we wait for the redemption of our bodies [fromsensuality and the grave, which will reveal] our adoption (our manifestation as God'ssons). (Romans 8:23, AMP)

    e. My future is not based in (dependent on) politics. Its not based in the stock market. Myfuture is based on my inheritance in Christ Jesus. Praying in the Spirit is a divine secret

between God and me. It is my future. It is my heritage. It is my destination. It is thevision of my life being prayed out and given root to before it is even made known to this

natural world. ~ Kenneth Copeland5. Allows you to pray about things you could not know (Romans 8:26-27)
