Parcularly, because it is God Himself speaking of heaven we have to be very aenve. Ulmately because this is our whole, and central, aim in the Chrisan life: heaven and perfect union with God. Jesus presents us with an image of heaven being like a landowner that calls people to his vineyard at different hours. It is expected for Jesus to place a reversal in His parables, like he normally does. Thus the last get paid the same as the first. Even though this seems unjust that the workers are not awarded a wage that is in proporon to the amount of work that is done, this is a deliberate and literary affect to draw out Jesus point more clearly. As an aside, it is worth knowing that the later workers were not lazy or incompetent. The way labourers got hired was they waited in the marketplace in the morning for someone to hire them. At the start the beer workers got hired and as the hours went by the less producve the workers were. Essenally then, only the lame and crippled were leſt at the end. Thus, the image of hiring the lame and crippled should invoke an image of a concern for those who need to cover their needs (money to provide for themselves), the dignity of working (parcipate in the act of creang), and the love and trust from another (parcipate in the community). All these are GOOD and NECESSARY for each human person. As Pope John Paul II once said: “A society will be judged on the basis of how it treats its weakest members and among the most vulnerable”. This parable then tells us three massive and significant details about heaven. Firstly, we enter into a perfect society where everyone is loved, respected, and given the dignity that they deserve (for being a child of God, not on worldly or superficial standards that get imposed on people). Secondly, something that needs to be highlighted is that the longer working workers are not unrewarded. They view their reward selfishly. They want something for themselves. However, a basic rule of all good things is that they are outward facing (whilst not neglecng the person giving). The work that they do, which we should put ourselves in their shoes, is for the sancficaon of God’s people. Our earthly work is not a waste of me, it is producve and effecve. It is done to build and guide others to heaven. So by the fact that they got disgruntled at receiving the same wage, they loose sight that their own work lead to that person coming back to God; a reality that is possible in all our acons. Lastly, that God is madly in love with us. He even calls people at the last moment (11th hour). We should be honoured that His love is so ridiculous that he allows people to enter at the very end. It is a gratuitous, unmerited, invitaon to God and heaven. Who are we to set limits on God’s goodness. Added to the fact is that there is no greater reward than perfecon and complete union with God. Therefore, we should aim to be joyful of this great, merciful, loving God not envious that others get the same reward. Namora

A Gospel Reflection

Hello, I am your weekly bulletin, please take me home.

When Jesus presents an image of heaven its in our best interests to pay close attention to what he is saying. Particularly, because it is God Himself speaking of heaven we have to be very attentive. Ultimately because this is our whole, and central, aim in the Christian life: heaven and perfect union with God. Jesus presents us with an image of heaven being like a landowner that calls people to his vineyard at different hours. It is expected for Jesus to place a reversal in His parables, like he normally does. Thus the last get paid the same as the first. Even though this seems unjust that the workers are not awarded a wage that is in proportion to the amount of work that is done, this is a deliberate and literary affect to draw out Jesus point more clearly. As an aside, it is worth knowing that the later workers were not lazy or incompetent. The way labourers got hired was they waited in the marketplace in the morning for someone to hire them. At the start the better workers got hired and as the hours went by the less productive the workers were. Essentially then, only the lame and crippled were left at the end. Thus, the image of hiring the lame and crippled should invoke an image of a concern for those who need to cover their needs (money to provide for themselves), the dignity of working (participate in the act of creating), and the love and trust from another (participate in the community). However, a basic rule of all good things is that they are outward facing (whilst not neglecting the person giving). The work that they do, which we should put ourselves in their shoes, is for the sanctification of God’s people. Our earthly work is not a waste of time, it is productive and effective. It is done to build and guide others to heaven. So by the fact that they got disgruntled at receiving the same wage, they loose sight that their own work lead to that person coming back to God; a reality that is possible in all our actions. Lastly, that God is madly in love with us. He even calls people at the last moment (11th hour). We should be honoured that His love is so ridiculous that he allows people to enter at the very end. St Vincent the Paul ’Love the poor. Honour them, my children, as you would honour Christ himself’ Vincent de Paul was born in the small southern French town of Pouy (later renamed Saint Vincent de Paul in his honour) on 24 April 1581 and ordained as a priest in 1600 at the age of 19. As a young man he ministered to the wealthy and powerful. However an appointment as chaplain to a poor parish, and to galley prisoners, inspired him to a vocation of working with those most marginalised and powerless. Vincent urged his followers to bring God’s justice and love to people who were unable to live a full human life: “Deal with the most urgent needs. Organise charity so that it is more efficient…teach reading and writing, educate with the aim of giving each the means of self-support. Intervene with authorities to obtain reforms in structure… there is no charity without justice.” Vincent de Paul died in Paris on 27 September 1660 at the age of 79. He was canonised on 16 June 1737 and, in 1883, the Church designated him as the special patron of all charitable associations. The Society was named after Saint Vincent de Paul and follows his teachings and compassion for people in need. Saint Vincent de Paul is the international patron of the Society.

We thank our Religious Education Coordinators Anne Leet (Mother Theresa School), Catherine Doig/Sam Bartley (Holy Spirit School), Anthony O’Connell/Nat Wright (Good Shepherd School) and Anne Gilfelt (Parish Sacramental Teacher) along with all the Year 3 teachers for supporting our children and guiding them on the next step of their spiritual journey. Many of the team willingly gave up their personal time to be at every event to support the children they were leading. A BIG THANK YOU also to the Altar Servers who participated in the First Eucharist Masses. Your assistance to Fr Mark at this special time is greatly appreciated. The Mass Coordinators, Welcomers, Musicians and singers, PowerPoint operators, Extraordinary Ministers of Communion and Traffic wardens; those who helped with the ironing, sorting and distribution of the First Eucharist robes; Church cleaners and decorators. Marriage Plebiscite As survey forms begin arriving in letterboxes across Australia, it is important that we are fully equipped with information about the consequences of changing the definition of marriage and the impacts this will have on individuals, families, education and churches. The Coalition for Marriage has released a comprehensive guide to some of the key consequences and questions around this important conversation. Go to www.coalitionformarriage.com.au/handbook to download your free copy.

Today’s Gospel expresses the right to of the Landowner to share with the greatest and the least his good fortune. This is how we need to understand God. For us too the best thing to give… to your enemy is forgiveness; to an opponent, tolerance; to a friend, your heart; to your child, a good example to a father, esteem; to your mother, conduct that will make her proud of you to yourself, respect to all men, charity.
