6th Sunday in Ordinary Time

February 15th & 16th, 2020

……from your Pastor’s Desk

A.M.A.

As you know I was a Military Chaplain for many years lived in a world of acronyms. I returned to the Diocese to parish Ministry in 2003. Until then the acronym ‘A.M.A.’ meant one of four things to me: Ameri-can Medical Association, American Motorcyclist Association, American Music Awards or ‘Against Medical Advice’. I soon learned that it had a fourth; Annual Ministry Appeal. Something you are very familiar with. For many years Holy Spirit Parish has been very generous and timely in your response to this appeal. Nice.

So – why do we have this A.M.A. every year? Don’t we send the diocese money every month any-way? Didn’t we just recently finish a ‘Capital Campaign’? Well…yes…and yes. Let me take a few moments now to explain the relationship between parish and Diocese. All Roman Catholic parishes worldwide, includ-ing ours, do not stand alone as separate entities. They only exist as part of a Diocese - we only exist as part of the Diocese of Santa Rosa – which is a part of the Archdiocese of San Francisco and on and up all the way to The Vatican.

The Church gives us spiritual guidance and direction. To achieve this it depends upon a formal hierar-

chal and institutional structure for administrative purposes. Similar to secular organizations and institutions it is dependent upon its constituents for its support - both financial and in our case - spiritual. Here at our parish we take in a weekly collection to meet our weekly expenses. The Diocese does not have such a capacity. They depend on the individual parishes to fund the various programs that serve the Diocese as a whole.

So, how are these monies collected and amounts determined? Each parish is assessed a figure based

on previous years ‘plate’ (money you put in the basket on Sundays) contributions. This year our portion to-wards the A.M.A. is $41,228. (If by chance we exceed our goal then 100% of that excess comes right back to us). I have looked into this in comparison to the assessment of all the other parishes and can say that this is fair in that evaluation.

BEFORE I CONTINUE – THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT – ANY CHECK OR CASH CONTRIBU-TION MUST HAVE OUR NAME – HOLY SPIRIT PARISH ON IT – so that we get the credit towards our goal. At this point we still need to raise $29,995. to make our minimal goal.

Some of you have already received an A.M.A. mailing. We have about 600 households registered in our parish. As of this writing, [Wednesday, Feb 12] 27 households have contributed a total of $11,233. Some households will contribute soon.

Many of you are new here this year so did not receive a mailing. To facilitate the process there will be

an ‘in-pew’ solicitation soon at all the masses. Envelopes and pencils will be handed out and you can take a few moments to write your contribution amount and how you will provide it [Check, Money Order, Cash, Credit Card, etc.]. The envelopes are self-explanatory. I prefer that you drop them in our collection baskets or at the parish office. But, if you have already contributed via mail – there is no need to fill out another one. We will collect the envelopes at the end of Mass – and send them all together, or you can bring it to the next Mass you attend here. Either way it is imperative that they know you are sending it from this parish so we get full credit towards our goal. If you choose to mail it, please ensure you have our parish name on it (Holy Spirit Parish) so that we will receive full-credit towards our goal. Okay? Okay…

It is up to you how you want to contribute to the A.M.A.; either to the general fund - or - just one or a few Ministries. Please make a note with your donation. Although all ministries are worthy and in need. Following is a list of the ministries that benefit from the A.M.A., several of which relate specifically to the people of Holy Spirit. I have always encouraged you to take ownership of this parish. In this way you can ex-tend that same sense to your Diocese. You are encouraged to donate in ‘general’ [as I do] but, if there is or are particular ministries that you would like to support, please indicate that in writing and they will try to ac-commodate you.

Can you solve this riddle?

What should we not be surprised or worried about, for God gives us perseverance to overcome them?

Because of them, we are promised patience and a crown of life. John tells us to count them as joy,

because they prove the strength of our faith.

Answer to last week: Faith

100 Riddles for Christians by Levar M. Odum

*Due to the flu season, the Precious Blood will not be offered indefinitely, so the Eucharistic Ministers have changed for each mass

Healing Mass

There will be a Special healing mass for the parish, as well as anointing of the sick:

Sunday, Feb 23rd at 5pm

Here they are:

Campus Newman Centers, Child and Youth Pro-tection, Clergy Formation, Communication, Cath-olic Schools, Diaconate Formation, Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs, Hispanic Ministry, Marian Sisters of Santa Rosa, Marriage and Family Life, Native American Ministry, Religious Education, Respect Life, Restorative Justice, Seminarians, Tribunal, Vocations, Youth/Young Adult Ministry.

Note: Not one cent of monies collected thought the A.M.A. goes towards any legal or settle-ment fees. They ONLY go to the ministries you will see mentioned above.

Just so you know I have personally pledged $200.00. So – only $29,795 [minimally] more to go! My hope is that with each household giving what they can, 100% participation can be a reality. To-gether – we can do this!

God bless you, our parish and our diocese.

Father Ron

Faith Formation Grades Preschool to 5th Grade

This Week’s Gospel: Matthew 5:17–37

The Law of Moses contains 613 laws. Some of these laws are simple, basic, you-shall or you-shall-not commands, of which the Ten Commandments are typical. Some of these laws govern worship. A good many of the 613 laws are what-if laws that apply the Commandments to everyday life. In the Gospel, Jesus’ New Law asks people to deepen their keeping of the laws and to follow his new Law of Love.

Pray Together: Plan a special treat for the whole family. Before you share the treat together, share words of love and appreciation with one another. Then, ask God to bless your family with the gift of enduring love. Enjoy the treat

together; after the treat, hold hands and thank God in a prayer for all he has given and done for your family. https://www.pflaumweeklies.com/resources-for-families/

Adult Lenten Faith Sharing Group (Reflection on the Sunday Readings)

Tuesday Afternoons, 1PM during Lent

Small faith-sharing groups may reflect on scripture, but faith sharing reaches beyond information and insight about scrip-ture to how the scripture message can transform the individ-ual and the community. The process of faith sharing is theo-logical reflection (reflection on God and the things of God).

Faith-sharing questions encourage reflection on personal experience rather than factual understanding. For example, a bible study of the Syro-Phoenician woman who asks Jesus

to heal her daughter might begin with an understanding of the geography of the area of Israel and Syria. A faith-sharing question might ask “Why did Jesus refuse to heal the woman’s daughter? When have you been tested by God’s seeming indifference to your needs?”

Please sign up in the back of the church or contact Megan O’Neill ([email protected] or 539-4495) if you are interested in attending. Location will be announced when I have an idea of how many are attending.
