Hi all: We are down to the count for our wonderful Dominicans

to leave. These are the men who have been our mentors in min-

istry for so many years. They have been the examples of what

Christ wants us to do and how Christ wants us to be for others.

We have talked in every corner of the parish about how difficult

this was going to be. I can guarantee you that the parish staff

spoke in these same terms. When I first heard that this was go-

ing to happen I came across a children’s book by Kathleen C.

Szaj called I Hate Goodbyes. I’m going to share it with you as I

paraphrase what it says and add my own style to some of it. I

believe that children can always teach us about feelings!

We all hate good-byes! There was this little girl named Annie

who decided she was going to find a way to make all good byes

disappear. One day her daddy was going to work in a far away

city for a few weeks. Well...Annie was upset and wouldn’t say

good-bye, but she started to sing a song she had just learned in

school that week. She figured that singing would make the good

byes go away! Right? Her grandparents had come to stay for a

month and it was time for them to say good-bye. They wanted to

give her good-bye hugs and kisses She ignored them and ran and

found her favorite teddy bear and started scolding him for any-

thing she could think of. She was NOT saying good-bye to

Granny and Grandpa. Scolding bad teddies should make the

good-byes disappear! Right? One day her mummy said that she

had to go to a conference, but she would be back in a few days.

Well...Annie wouldn’t even say good-bye She ran and hid in her

room... hiding should make good-byes and good-bye feelings

disappear. Right? Annie tried to forget all the good-byes but she

kept hearing them in her mind. Everyone hates good-byes!

Yes... more than anything else in the world. As Annie grew old-

er she slowly began to understand that everyone wished we

could make good-byes disappear forever.

But, here we are...hating good-byes! We want to sing, to get

mad at something or someone, hide and not say good-bye. But

we can’t. We have to say the words, but we have to know that

they are only words . This is a small world and we will see our

friends again. Yes we hate good-byes. But knowing that all of us

are feeling the same way can help us feel a little better. Right!

Our unsung heroes this week are all the Dominicans who have

provided Jesus to us in so many ways. Each of us has our favor-

ite, I am sure, but that doesn’t mean that we didn’t love and ap-

preciate all that we’ve had. It will be hard to say good-bye, but

we need to be thankful for what gifts we have shared. We need

to be thankful that they did things for our parish above and be-

yond the norm. They have truly been our unsung heroes for over

100 years!

Blessings to them

and to all our pa-

rishioners as we

start down a new

path.

A Message from Fr. Roberto

Parish theme for this year: Be Disciples. Make Disciples.

Called to Love Our Enemies – Not Necessarily to Like Them

Perhaps Jesus’ most difficult challenge to us Christians is

his command to love even our enemies: “But I say to you,

love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute

you, that you may be children of your heavenly Fa-

ther…” (Mt 5:44-45). These words of J esus seem just as

shocking, unrealistic and impossible to us today as they

must have been to his original listeners who were subjects

of the cruel and tyrannical Roman Empire. Imagine what

our world would be like today if all of us human beings

would at least try

to live out this

command of Jesus.

Think of all the

wars, ethnic, polit-

ical and religious

conflicts that

would be avoided!

Even on the small-

er scale of our per-

sonal lives, Jesus’

command to love our enemies could have an enormous im-

pact upon feuding families, ex-spouses, conflicts with

neighbors, coworkers, schoolmates, etc.

I am sure Jesus was questioned by many of his followers about

this command. Then, as now, we human beings ask: “How is

it possible for me to love someone who has hurt me or a loved

one so terribly? How is it possible to love someone who

doesn’t acknowledge or doesn’t care about the pain they have

caused?” There are no easy answers to these questions, but I

believe that if we are going to try to live out these challenging

words of Jesus, it is helpful to understand what they call us to

and what they do not call us to.

First of all, what does it mean to love our enemies? St. Thom-

as Aquinas, following Aristotle, defines love as “willing the

good of another.” Our will is the deepest and most powerful

faculty we have as humans, deeper than our emotions and our

intellect. Our will is where we choose to do something, good

or bad. So, for example, we can choose to tell the truth even if

our emotions tell us we don’t feel like doing it, and even

though our intellect tells us that we might get into trouble if

we do so. Therefore, loving our enemies dictates that we go

beyond our feelings and emotions and choose to will their

good. Spelling this out further, it means that we cannot want

bad things to happen to them, as tempting as that might be.

We cannot take revenge or even desire revenge; we cannot

gossip about them or try to make them look bad to others. This

is especially important in situations like divorce where it can

be so tempting to denigrate our ex-spouse in front of the chil-

dren; to do so can cause incredible damage to the kids in par-

ticular.

Instead, we are challenged by Jesus to take the high road of

integrity and nobility and not lower ourselves to be less than

we are, to be less than what God calls us to be. We are called

to pray for our enemies and ask God to bless them. Of course,

in our prayer for them we can ask God to open their hearts and

their eyes to see the hurt they have caused us and to repent and

ask our forgiveness. Finally, and perhaps most difficult of all,

if we have a chance to do them some good, Jesus’ command

challenges us to try to do it. Both religious and secular litera-

ture throughout the ages, including, of course, the lives of the

saints, have conveyed numerous stories of former enemies

being converted by the inexplicable kindness of their victims.

Understandably, it can take some time for us to get beyond our

anger, outrage and even hatred to the point of loving and pray-

ing for our enemies; nevertheless, it is the noble ideal to which

we are called by Jesus.

Through the years, however, I have found that many people

confuse Jesus’ command to love our enemies with having to

like them, and they often feel guilty because they cannot come

to like someone who has hurt them. If that describes you, let

me have the honor of setting you free from needless guilt and

worry: Jesus never commanded us to like our enemies! We

have to love them, not like them. It is not a sin to dislike an

enemy. Webster ’s

Dictionary defines

liking someone as

“to regard with

favor; have a kind-

ly or friendly feel-

ing for…” In other

words, it means

having an attrac-

tion toward some-

one or having a

positive emotional

bond with a person. So, even though we are commanded by

Jesus to love our enemies, by willing their good, it does not

mean we have to be friends with them, smile at them, have

warm feelings toward them or hang around with them. We

have every right to avoid our enemies if we can and take what-

ever steps we need to ensure that they do not have an oppor-

tunity to hurt us again. Jesus calls us to love our enemies, not

necessarily to like them.

Farewell and Welcome on July 1st

Our last day with the Dominicans will be Sunday, July 1st.

Fr. Roberto and Fr. Bart will be celebrating Mass, and Fr.

Ramiro and Fr. Jimmy will be concelebrating! Each Mass

has been lovingly planned by different ministries and groups

from our parish. Please join us as Fr. Roberto preaches for

the last time in our beautiful church.

Thank you for your support during the transition. With

God’s grace and the leadership of many people at Holy

Rosary Church and School, the parish will move through

this time of change in an open, faith-filled way.

guerras, conflictos

étnicos, políticos y

religiosos que se

evitarían! Aun en la

escala más pequeña

de nuestras vidas

personales, el man-

llama a amar a nuestros enemigos, no necesariamente a

tener amistad con ellos.
