PRESIDENT’S DAY HOLIDAY Monday, February 17, 2014, in observance of President’s Day, the school and Parish offices will be closed. There will be one Mass at 9 :00 AM in the Church.

FAZtor ‘s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora As the clock struck midnight to signal the start of the 10th day of February, I was kneeling before the im-age of the Sacred Heart of Jesus thanking the good

Lord for the gift of life on my 50-something birthday. Thank you also for your greetings, your best wishes and your gifts, material and spir-itual. I was also thanking God for the gift of earthly life and the even greater and more precious gift of eternal life He has given to our long time parishioner and dedicated parish minister, Delores Yohannon, who passed away last week. Delores was a very active member of the following groups prior to her unexpected death: Lay Canossians, Holy Name Ladies Aide, Senior Club, Prayer Group, Grief Support, Homebound Ministry, Wednesday Hospitality, as well as her Birthday Group and AARP group. She was also a devoted volunteer as our Monday Receptionist and Saturday CCD Receptionist at our Pastoral Center. She was also the designated driver for our homebound parishioners so they could attend the Homebound mass, for Senior Club members so they could play Bingo every Thursday, and for just about anybody who needed a ride. And she did it without any complaint. I was glad that our Canos-sian Sisters insisted she have a funeral service at Holy Name, even though her remains will be buried in Turlock, CA. We had Rosary and Funeral mass for her last Thursday. There are so many good things to say about Delores but in few simple words, she was a living saint. Thank you Delores and enjoy the reward of eternal life! From thanks for the gift of earthly and eternal life, my prayer shifted to praying for those who are still struggling for life, those who are sick, in particular a first cousin of mine who has Stage 4 Liver cancer. That simply means he is soon to die and by medical prognosis he has at most, 6 months to live. I am mentioning this cousin of mine because he was very instrumental in my entering the seminary. He was also in the seminary two years ahead of me and he always told me the fun and wonderful things in seminary life. In a way, he was the one who influenced my decision to enter the seminary, leading to my priesthood. He left the seminary after college and more so, after he had sown the seed of priesthood in me. Please join me in praying for my cousin VirZam, short for Virgilio Zamora. Pope Francis, with on his message for the 22nd World Day of the Sick, which is always celebrated on the 11th of February, the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, commended this year’s celebration to the inter-cession of Mary, so that she will help the sick people to live their own suffering in communion with Jesus Christ. Mama Mary will surely look after Virzam who once brought me to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary. P.S. No joke today but you can always look at the mirror and smile for the face that you have, and especially for life itself.

The Second Vatican Council: A 50th Anniversary Retrospective By the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church, October 11, 1962-December 8, 1965; Edited by Jerry Back

Question: What types of music are given special distinctions?Answer from Sacrosanctum Concilium: The Church acknowledges Gregorian chant as especially suited to the Roman liturgy: therefore, other things being equal, it should be given pride of place in liturgical services. But other kinds of sacred music, especially polyphony (Editor’s note: two or more simultaneous lines of independent melo-dy), are by no means excluded from liturgical celebrations, so long as they accord with the spirit of the liturgical action. Religious singing by the people is to be intelligently fostered so that in devotions and sacred exercises, as also during liturgical services, the voices of the faithful may ring out according to the norms and requirements of the rubrics

Question: What types of instruments can be used for divine worship Answer from Sacrosanctum Concilium: In the Latin Church the pipe organ is to be held in high esteem, for it is the traditional musical instrument which adds a wonderful splendor to the Church's ceremo-nies and powerfully lifts up man's mind to God and to higher things.

But other instruments also may be admitted for use in divine worship, with the knowledge and consent of the competent territorial authority. This may be done, however, only on condition that the instruments are suitable, or can be made suitable, for sacred use, accord with the dignity of the temple, and truly contribute to the edification of the faith-ful. Editor’s Note: Sacrosanctum Concilium (the Constitution on the Sa-cred Liturgy) has as its central aim a focus on greater participation of the laity in the liturgy. We are now reviewing the constitution’s sixth chapter, “Sacred Music.” The remaining chapter in Sacrosanctum Concilium will look at "Sacred Art."

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In a few weeks’ time, at the Chrism Mass of the diocese, fresh sacramental oils will be blessed and chrism consecrated for use in every parish. Olive oil is the main ingredient of chrism, but olive oil with some exotic additives that change its character and purpose. Rich balsam and perfumes separate chrism from the pantry. Food no longer, neither is this oil for grooming or toning muscles. It has a breathtaking aroma that is both alluring and enduring. The prayer of consecration is a good meditation for the coming Lenten season since it focuses us on the goal of our journey,

the oil of chrism will be poured down in abundance on the brows of catechumens and infants, as well as on those to be confirmed or or-dained. Lent puts us in touch with the hard edges of life in need of salvation, and the chrism of Easter joy redeems and restores. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

February 11, 2014 Dear Holy Name Families, Thank you to Mrs. Laura Miller for a very successful Science Fair, last Wednesday evening. Each year Mrs. Miller goes above and beyond our expectations to make our Science Fair memo-rable. On Tuesday evening a group of scientists from Genentech judged each entry from our junior high school students. They were very impressed by the level of science experiments and presentations that filled our gym. There is a list of winners in this bulletin. Parents and students enjoyed looking at our junior high entries and class presentations from kindergarten through 5th grades. Students were able to explain their project to each other and to their parents and younger students were able to show how different experiments worked. The gym was filled with excited and proud students. Thank you to Sister Esther Ling, the Chinese language teachers and many other parents for all the work you did for the won-derful Chinese New Year Dinner. It takes many dedicated parents working hard before, during and after an event like this to make it a success. Some of our 8th grade students really stepped up and helped to serve and clean up. We appreciate your work. Thank you to our students who practiced after their language classes so that they would be ready to perform for you and bring in the Year of the Horse. God bless you. Sincerely, Mrs. Judy Cosmos SCIENCE FAIR NEWS We are proud of all the projects displayed at the Science Fair last week. There were many impressive experiments. Sixth, seventh and eighth grade projects were judged by scientists from Genentech. The first, second, third place and honorable mention winners were treated to a day of Free Dress and a pizza lunch. Thank you to Cassandy Ma and mem-bers of the Planning Committee for organizing this annual event. We appreciate the help of those who set up the gym for the dinner, who stayed to clean up after the dinner, to all those who donated prizes for the raffle, to the Chinese language instructors for preparing the stu-dents in their dancing and singing performance, and to all who attend-ed the event. Special appreciation goes to alumni Janet Lao, Toby Lee and Kenneth Ma who assisted in checking people in and for em-ceeing the event with confidence and humor. We would like to thank the following eighth grade students who helped serve the dinner and clean up: William Chen, Samantha Chen, Vanessa Lee, William Lin, Nelson Ma, Ty Rapoport, Tianna Siu and Calvin Wong.

HOLY NAME SCHOOL Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time: Mt. 5: 17-37

‘I have come to fulfill them…’ The crowds gathered on the hillside had never heard anyone

like Jesus before. His confident words were like pure scripture. To these Galileeans it was as if Yahweh himself was speaking to them. Jesus had been quoting scripture from the book of Deuteronomy, but his own words seemed more sacred.

Jesus’ teachings were like the masterful toss of a huge fishing net. He would cast his concept out above the crowd, letting it slowly settle over them. As they understood his words they were captivated and filled with a strange excitement.

Jesus said he wasn’t trying to replace the Jewish laws. He said he was bringing these laws to refinement and perfection.

Jesus opened his arms in welcome and proclaimed: “I have come, not to abolish the law and the prophets. I have come to fulfill them!”

He told them the laws weren’t about just getting by and doing the minimum. He invited them to embrace the law completely. To let it seep beneath their skin and into their lives.

The people came to understand that it is the seemingly smaller sin of anger which leads to the grave sin of murder. It is the seemingly smaller sin of lustful thoughts which lead to the serious sin of adultery. Adultery leads to divorce. Oaths and agreements are made to be broken unless they flow from an honest and truthful heart.

Jesus told them: “Say yes when you mean yes and no when you mean no. Anything beyond that is from the evil one.”

Today we are still called to fulfill the laws which Jesus

preached about on the hillside near Capernaum. We are still told that we are called to follow not only the big laws, but even the smallest of these commands.

We are challenged to obey the spirit of the law as well as the specific words. If murder is against the law, aren’t the seeds of anger also? Isn’t the lustful glance or the little white lie the source of a great-er evil?

Jesus says that “getting by” is not enough. As we approach the Lenten season Jesus teachings in this Sunday’s Gospel gently lead us to a more profound preparation.
