HOLY NAME LADIES AID COLLECTION Today, members of the Holy Name Ladies Aid will be collecting for the needy in the Parish.

Your generosity is always appreciated. Boxes are at the exits.

CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS COLLECTION There are many places right here in the United States and in its overseas dependen-cies where the Church is poor, communities are scattered, and priests are few. Money given to the Catholic Home Missions Ap-

peal helps Catholic communities across America survive and thrive, by underwriting evangelization, religious edu-cation, education for future priests, training for lay minis-ters, and poor parishes that would have to close their doors without outside help. The Catholic Home Missions Appeal helps strengthen the Catholic Church at home. More than ninety-two cents of every dollar contributed goes directly to the missions. Your generosity is appreciated on April 25/26, 2009.

CONFIRMATION DAY Congratulations to our Confirmandi who will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation on Friday, April 24, 2009 at 5:00 PM. The Rehearsal for the Confirmandi and their Sponsors is Wednesday, April 22 at 7 p.m. A big Holy Name welcome to Bishop William Justice who will be our main celebrant. Thank you to all the teachers who have helped the students in their sacramental preparation for the 7th and 8th grades.

2009 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal The Archbishop’s Annual Appeal (AAA) assists in funding the overall budget of the Archdiocese and provides services parishes cannot support themselves. Along with other funding sources, your generosity and commitment to the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal allows Archbishop Nied-erauer and the dedicated staff of the Archdiocese to provide important services to our Universal Church and our local community. To date, we have received about $20,710 in pledges and contributions. That puts us into 39% of our goal of $52,900. It is Fr. Don’s desire to be able to fulfill this amount by June. Help us reach this goal. Please send in your pledges or contributions now. For about the cost of a plain cup of Starbucks Cof-fee per day, you could contribute $500 per year or more to the Archbishop’s Appeal to aid the work of the Church and to minister to all those supported by these services and agencies. The money you contribute has a far-reaching im-pact in your parish, your Archdiocese and beyond. This Easter week, think about making a pledge to help Holy Name Parish, our Archdiocese and the Universal Catholic Church.

What is Divine Mercy? The Divine Mercy Message and Devotion

The message of The Divine Mercy is simple. It is that God loves us — all of us. And, he wants us to recog-nize that His mercy is greater than our sins, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let it flow through us to others. Thus, all will come to share His joy. The Divine Mercy message is one we can call to mind simply by remembering ABC: A - Ask for His Mercy. God wants us to approach Him in prayer constantly, repenting of our sins and asking Him to pour His mercy out upon us and upon the whole world. B - Be merciful. God wants us to receive His mercy and let it flow through us to others. He wants us to extend love and forgiveness to others just as He does to us. C - Completely trust in Jesus. God wants us to know that the graces of His mercy are dependent upon our trust. The more we trust in Jesus, the more we will receive. This message and devotion to Jesus as The Divine Mercy is based on the writings of Saint Faustina Kowalska, an uneducated Polish nun who, in obedience to her spiritual director, wrote a diary of about 600 pages recording the revelations she received about God's mercy. Even before her death in 1938, the devotion to The Divine Mercy had begun to spread. Spend time to learn more about the mercy of God, learn to trust in Jesus, and live your life as merciful to oth-ers, as Christ is merciful to you.

A CHEERFUL GIVER A cheerful giver does not count the cost of what he gives. His heart is set on pleasing and cheering the one to whom the gift is given. —St. Julian

CATECHISM CORNER by Jerry Back From Easter Sunday to Pentecost, the 50-day season of Easter is making me joyously reflect as to why I became a Christian just a little over a year ago here at Holy Name of Jesus Parish. I could have been baptized in any number of non-Catholic churches, but I came to understand that only through the same Church established by Jesus two thou-sand years ago would I experience the fullness of Christ's love, teaching and will for me here on Earth. Question: What does the Catholic Church provide that is so needed by all Christians? Answer from the Catechism of the Catholic Church (2030): It is in the Church, in communion with all the baptized, that the Christian fulfills his vocation. From the Church he re-ceives the Word of God containing the teachings of "the law of Christ." From the Church he receives the grace of the sacraments that sustains him on the "way." From the Church he learns the example of holiness and recognizes its model and source in the all-holy Virgin Mary; he discerns it in the authentic witness of those who live it; he discovers it in the spiritual tradition and long history of the saints who have gone before him and whom the liturgy celebrates in the rhythms of the sanctoral cycle. Question: What are the "Precepts of the Church?" Answer from the Catechism (2042, 2043): 2042 The first precept ("You shall attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation and rest from servile labor") requires the faithful to sanctify the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord as well as the principal liturgical feasts honoring the Mysteries of the Lord, the Blessed Vir-gin Mary, and the saints; in the first place, by participating in the Eucharistic celebration, in which the Christian com-munity is gathered, and by resting from those works and activities which could impede such a sanctification of these days. The second precept ("You shall confess your sins at least once a year") ensures preparation for the Eucharist by the reception of the sacrament of reconciliation, which contin-ues Baptism's work of conversion and forgiveness. The third precept ("You shall receive the sacrament of the Eucharist at least during the Easter season") guarantees as a minimum the reception of the Lord's Body and Blood in connection with the Paschal feasts, the origin and center of the Christian liturgy. 2043 The fourth precept ("You shall observe the days of fasting and abstinence established by the Church") ensures the times of ascesis and penance which prepare us for the liturgical feasts and help us acquire mastery over our in-stincts and freedom of heart. The fifth precept ("You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church") means that the faithful are obliged to assist with the material needs of the Church, each according to his own ability. The faithful also have the duty of providing for the material needs of the Church, each according to his own abilities.
