Pastor’s Poetry Post-Its
Pastor’s Post
The Church year ends today with the Feast of Christ the King. Every year on this day I am reminded of the cry of BI. Miguel Pro, SJ at the moment of his martyrdom. With his arms stretched out as if on the cross itself, he shouted “Viva Cristo Rey!” (Long live Christ the King) as the firing squad aimed point blank at his heart. Fr. Miguel Pro was associated with the Cristero movement in Mexico at a time of brutal repression of the Church by the government. The Cristeros were devout Catholics who courageously opposed the regime. Like Fr. Pro many were martyred. They were inspired by the recently proclaimed Feast of Christ the King by Pope Pius XI in 1925 in response to the rise of fascism and Marxist communism in the world. The Cristeros openly proclaimed their ultimate loyalty to Jesus Christ above any state. The Cristeros’ cry of defiance was “Viva Cristo Rey!” In recent years the Jesuits have established a number of scholarship high schools across the United States called Cristo Rey Schools. They evoke the memory of Blessed Miguel Pro and so many others who dared proclaim their uncompromised loyalty to Jesus Christ above any ideology or government. May his heroic example inspire our undivided adherence to Jesus as well. Padre Pro, ruega por nosotros. Ad Marjoram Dei Gloriam!
Fr. Hugh, O.P.

“Poem for Christ the King”
See how this homeless babe lifted
himself down into his humble Crèche
and laid his tender glove
of skin against the splintered wood—
found refuge in that rack
of raspy straw-home
on that chilly dawn, in sweetest
silage, those shriven stalks.
See how this outcast King lifted
himself high upon his savage Cross,
extended the regal banner
of his bones, draping himself
upon his throne — his battered feet,
his wounded hands not fastened
there by nails but sewn
by the strictest thorn of Love.

This weekend we are again using the beautiful version of Psalm 145, I Will Praise Your Name, by David Haas that we used last week. It is appropriate for today’s feast, Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, formerly called Christ the King. This feast was established by Pope Pius XI in 1925 as an antidote to secularism, a way of life which leaves God out of man’s thinking and living and organizes his life as if God doesn’t exist. Pope Pius XI established the feast to proclaim that Christ is God, the supreme power over all things created by Him. The feast also reminds us that Jesus is our redeemer, purchasing our salvation through His death, and that He is the head of the church, extending to all nations and all places. David Robert Haas was born in 1957 in Bridgeport Michigan and is highly regarded as one of the preeminent liturgical music composers in the world. He has been engaged in music and pastoral ministry his entire adult life. He studied vocal music performance and conducting at Central Michigan University and has a degree in Theology and Music from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. In 1999, David began the program Music Ministry Alive!, a five day liturgical program for youth and adult leaders that takes place on the campus of St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from the University of Portland in Oregon. David Haas has produced over forty-five original collections and recording of liturgical music. He is also the author of over 20 books on the topics of liturgy, music ministry, spirituality, religious education and youth ministry. His music is sung throughout the world and has been translated into many languages. Think of your five most favorite liturgical songs, and most likely at least one of them will have been written by David. We use many of them at Holy Innocents including Blest Are They, You Are Mine, We Are Called, Now We Remain, and We Have Been Told. His gift as a composer is evident through these memorable melodies, and vocal arrangements that emphasize the scripture passages they are based on. He and his wife, Helen, live in Eagan, Minnesota, where he serves as campus minister and director of the liturgical choir at Cretin-Derham Hall High School, and as the director of the Emmaus Center for Music, Prayer and Ministry. He is also an active cantor at St. Cecilia’s Parish in St. Paul.
“I will praise your name, my King and my God!”
Today we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King. Jesus is a different kind of King than the ones we are used to seeing in pictures, on television, and in the movies. Jesus is the King of all Kings and he rules with love, mercy, and acceptance. His Kingdom will never end! Some of our younger students made crowns that say ‘I AM A KING’S KID”! I LOVE SEEING THEM WALK THE HALLS OF THE Religious Education Program wearing their crowns with such pride! I also love when they ask me if I get it! We hope and pray that everyone gets it! It shows an intimate relationship with our King, Jesus Christ. If more people got it…..this world would be a better place! Let us continue to support each other and pray for one another.
Please note: We do not have classes on: Tuesday, December 4th, Thursday, December 6th.
On Wednesday, December 12th we do not have evening classes. We do, however, have afternoon classes on the 12th.

THE HOLY INNOCENTS LECTURE SERIES
Sunday, December 2nd at 7:30pm
Presents:
NAMI Ending the Silence is a NAMI Westchester mental health education presentation for
families and youth to better understand the signs and symptoms of emotional and
behavioral challenges that may be early warning signs of a mental health condition. The
presentation includes a PowerPoint presentation with an overview of mental health, coping
skills, recovery, and suicide prevention. The highlight of the presentation is a young adult
living with a mental health condition who shares their story of recovery and personal
experience in high school. This presentation can be done separately for youth groups and
parents so that each group has the opportunity to learn and discuss their questions. This
can lead to great conversations and understanding within the family.
1 in 5 kids experience a mental health condition, but only 20% of
them receive services.
About 50% of students ages 14+ with a mental health condition
will drop out of school.
Suicide is the second-leading cause of death for 15-24 year olds.
“Presenters provided powerful and inspirational messages about resources, support and resilience regarding mental illness. They responded to student questions with sensitivity, knowledge and humor.” Teacher, Westlake H.S.
